Since you guys have worked out solutions to most everything already... I thought I would see if anyone has a solution for carrying assembled fly rods INSIDE the MDX (the rod tubes fit nicely in the floor headrest compartment).
I often jump from one stream to another and I prefer not to breakdown my 8' and 9' fly rods. I realize the tip will have to flex against the windsheild regardless of the carrier.
I'm hoping to find something a bit cheaper than the $110 and $200 carriers on the following websites:

http://www.sportube.com/pages/pgfishmseries.html
Any other interesting ideas for a fly fisherman would be greatly appreciated.

PS... it's always about fly fishing. :D |

| When I've purchased or leased SUVs in the past, they had to meet two criteria (among many others) 1) I had to be able to stretch out and sleep in the back and 2) I had to be able to put a 9' fly rod in the car without taking it apart. Your MDX will carry a 9' easily just by carefully inserting it tip first through the passengers door and carefully aiming toward the rear hatch. The handle and reel rest on the passengers floor and the rod extends back toward the headliner with a little curve to the tip. I've been doing it for years. No problems, no broken rods. I too hop from site to site and stream to stream. Works great, try it. |

Allen,
Thanks for your suggestions. However, since writing the original thread I had a chance to do some winter fly fishing in southern Minnesota. As it turns out, I only needed to open the rear tailgate and slide the rod in on top of the cargo cover. The rod is light and not a threat to the cover. It didn't move around enough to warrant adding an internal rack. [I should have assumed that would be the case since that is how I carried them in the Integra]. If anything, I might add a simple rod racking piece intended for wall mounting to stablize the rods for travel. Once I have it fabricated/adapted I'll post pictures.
Fill out your profile, I'd like to know where you're living. I might be traveling your way. I like to do a bit of fishing everywhere I go.

David Jo,
I should have mentioned that its often just as easy to put the rod in through the hatch. Its too bad the rear window doesn't swing up as it did on the Grand Cherokee to make it even easier. I live in SE Michigan and do most of my fishing on the AuSable system (check out the website www.Gateslodge.com) or on the Rogue north of Grand Rapids at Rockford or on the Muskegon. I usual string up my rod before I leave home but without fully seating the ferrule(s). What I do is tie on a fly and wrap the tippet around the reel and then hook it on the stripping guide. This straightens out even a 10' leader and your ready to go as soon as you get to the river. If you ever do get to Mich to fish you really should try staying at Rusty Gates place. Its a great fishermans lodge. Not too fancy but with a great fly shop, nice lodgings, and a very good dining room overlooking the river. No liquor license but bring a good bottle of wine for dinner and they'll supply a corkscrew and wine glasses. Good prices too. Usually its easy to call ahead and reserve a room mid-week. You can literally walk 50' from your room, wade in and start casting with a good chance of catching wild brookies or browns. There are no stocked trout in the AuSable anymore. I'm already getting psyched for the trout opener the last Sat in April. I'll fill out the profile. |
