Has anyone experienced engine noise while accelerating that sounds like engine knocking - like when you put lower grade fuel than you care likes. I have used nothing but premium since day one and I get that knowcking sound when moderately accelerating. I can actually back off the sound my reducing my acceleration rate or increasing the acceleration rate.
Any comments would be welcomed. |

THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!!!
The knock sensor should retard timing to prevent "detonation" or "pre-ignition". The VTEC design is such that increased revs will give the higher lift cam profile and would be expected to make knock worse, as valve overlap would reduce the incombustible exhaust left in the mixture.
I would have the dealer check this out. Also, the situation you describe should not even be happening with "regular" unleaded, as the knock sensor is specifically designed to elimate part throttle pre-ignition.
I suppose the situation you describe COULD be made worse by accelerating just on the "edge" of a downshift, but still I would think the Honda engineers should have put code in the ECM to avoid pre-ignition even under "highly loaded" conditions.
If the technicians say something like "no codes, all is well" I would demand a road test in another MDX.
This should not happen.

Mesa,
I agree with renov8r about the knock sensor not apparently doing its job. But you mentioned that you had a bad service experience with your dealer recently so be prepared for not getting the answer you need. If you don't get satisfaction at your current dealer, try another one to get a second opinion. |
