Nasa is under lots of budget pressure and is forced to fly old, unfit shuttles.
Ramon, the oldest aboard led the 82 Israeli air strike on Iraq's first nukelear bomb making reactor. He helped the US set the terrorist back 20 years an Indian American astronaut was abroad as well. Our condolences' to their families.

May God Bless that crew and hope they did not suffer too much . . . :(

I am sure you have all heard of the tragic explosion of the space shuttle over Dallas today. I was outside with my camera ready to take a picture as it passed overhead at 8am (as advised by the news the night before). When I took this picture, I thought something looked wrong - since there were 2 contrails of smoke - it was travelling too fast for me to get the actual shuttle - it is hidden beyond the tree line.

I walked back into the house & heard a sonic boom, & then turned on the TV and heard NASA had lost contact with the shuttle. The picture was taken immediately after the first explosion & the sonic boom was the 2nd explosion about 8:05am.

I know you all have seen TV coverage, but here is the only picture I took.

My deepest sympathies to the familes of the Columbia Crew

How many more tragedies can we take? But we will go on. :(

Incredible photo, texrb. I was driving when the news feed came in, really shook me up. With 100+ missions, we don't appreciate what it takes to get these things in and out of space, they're not airplanes.

May they rest in peace.

texrb, great photo. I know that this is a national tragedy - yet it happened over Texas which makes it seem so much closer to home.

Thanks for the nice comments about the photo. I was sent a couple private messages about sending it to NASA - which I have done. I didn't think it showed anything, but sent it anyway in case it can be helpful.

As msu said - living in Texas - it seems to hit pretty close to home.

It is sad that as a nation we allow diversity to divide us; it often takes a tragedy to unite us once again. I am reminded of an old commercial railing againt Drunk Driving - the tag line was a parody saying the good thing about funerals is that it brings families together.

God bless all the families at this morning's memorial service.

We've seen three striking astronomical events in the past 10 hours.

First was a huge beautiful waning cresent just on the horizon as we were driving home - the very last slice before the new moon.

Second was a display of northern lights from midnight through the night.

Finally, there was a pair of sun dogs on this -9 morning - rainbows that form like parentheses around the sun in these arctic air masses.

I can't help but think that space is paying it's own tribute to the latest fallen explorers.
