The manual says to stay away from additives in Canada that contain MMT.

I just filled up at PetroCanada and the premium gas said it contains 'tactrol' a winter cleaning additive.

Does anybody know if tactrol=mmt? Are there gases that are prefered and others to stay away from up here in the great white north?

I had the same concern.........no problems encountered so far.

Other than having lost my gas cap:3:

$30 lesson learned.

FYI:

"What is MMT and why is it added to gasoline?

MMT (methyl cyclo pentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) is a manganese-based fuel additive used by most refiners in Canada to increase octane levels in gasoline to meet the requirements of the vehicle fleet.

MMT was temporarily banned from inter-provincial shipment in Canada because vehicle manufacturers said it would inhibit proper functioning of emission-control sensors built into later-model cars. But this concern was later rejected on scientific evidence and MMT was re-instated as an effective gasoline additive. A similar ban was lifted by a Federal Court of Appeal ruling in the United States."

The above was lifted from the Canada Petro Industry website. If you want more info just search on "gasoline additives MMT.

It should be noted that the ban on MMT was lifted only because the vehicle manufacturers couldn't definitively prove that it was harmful to the emission system components. The petro industry didn't have to prove it wasn't... so you get to make your own decision.

Finally, MMT is not being allowed in the states since there is no health or environmental data available on the effects of manganese that will be emitted in the exhaust. The concern is that it will be similar to leaded gas...

Hey ablatt. I just spoke with Honda Canada's Customer Relations during lunchtime and I was told that pretty much all gas stations/producers in Canada sell gas with MMT in it. It refers to some kinda sulphur additive. There is no legislation in Canada that prohibits selling gas with MMT, even though, as I undertand it, our southern neighbours do.

I wonder if my pinging problem with my Pilot is attributable to this gunk in our gas. It's really disconcerting hearing pinging/tapping noise whenever I press on the gas moderately hard. Grrrrr.....

I'm in Canada too and I fuel up in Mohawk with 94 Octane, which has 10% Ethanol mixed in it.

Is MMT = Ethanol?

If not, do any one of you know what's the impact of Ethanol on 03X?

Since we're discussing about Canadian Gas, can any one of you tell me what's your mileage in km? Mine is 17.5 litres per 100 km and I do 90% city 10% highway. What about yours?

MMT is not ethanol... See my earlier post.

Ethanol is alcohol usually derived from corn. Mileage will decrease with ethanol. You need to check your owners manual to see if the MDX fuel system is compatible with fuels containing ethanol. I do know that ethanol fuels should not be used in warm weather at temperatures over 90 F (32 C).

Ethanol blended fuels do burn cleaner and should be cheaper than pure petroleum blends.

Ethanol can also be derived from wheat and other biomass products. It is indeed more friendly to the environment. It also is a "natural gas-line antifreeze".

Lower mileage is a misconception.

Ethanol is known to contribute to vapour-lock in gas-lines at high temperatures, but concentrations of 10% or less do not have this impact on motive fuels.

Ethanol should not be misconstrued with methanol, which is a completely different product with far different properties and effects.

Provincial governments (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) think so highly of ethanol and its benefits to the environment (and its farmers) that they provide substantial tax abatements to marketers of fuels with concentrations as low as 6% ethanol.

I am in the Retail Operations dept. of Husky Energy, which owns Mohawk.

Hardly. It is a subsidy to farmers,
Perhaps the farmers need to do something with the over abundance of crops that they can grow, thanks to super efficient techniques, heavy reliance on fertilizers (often derived from petro-chemicals) and genetically engineered crops.

It takes a TREMENDOUS amount of energy to plant, spray, harvest, ferment & distill ethanol...

I am not a an environmental wacko, just a regular guy. I know that the ethanol may contribute to less air pollutants, but it is NOT "environmentally friendly" in the broadest sense...

Pierre,

Hate to argue but ethanol/gasoline blends (10% Ethanol) have about 10% lower BTU rating. That translates directly into lower fuel economy (less fuel per gallon).

It's cleaner and a renewable fuel source but you do get slightly lower mileage.

Like I've said in the past. . . you wacky Canadians

Bye-Bye:

When I saw the thread entitled "Canadian gas" I thought maybe all y'all up there were suffering a little mid-winter GI distress. :bootyshak

In the interest if continental tranqulility I refrained from any joke making. After all 'we Americans' haven't exactly been good neighbors lately (see also drugged American pilots bombing CAN troops and the upcoming war you're about to be dragged into).

Anyway, thanks for setting me straight wrt your gas problems...

Happy Trails,

Just talked to Honda about failed EGR Valve. Their response - blame your gas company. Honda told me that the MMT additive in gasoline sold in Canada will slowly kill the EGR Valve. Go figure!

I also understand that Sunoco 94 premium contains no MMT additive, but does contain alcohol. I don't have my manual handy, does it say anything against using gasoline with alcohol additives?

10% Ethenol gas is specically mentioned in the (2003) manual as perfectly acceptable.
Here's in Ottawa, MacEwan's sells their 89 octance Ethenol gas for the same price as 87, so that's where I tend to fill up most of the time. It's not premium, but it's hopefully better than regular.
