For anyone considering an X5 over the MDX:
BMW recalls 164,000 X5s
FRANKFURT - BMW AG is recalling 164,000 units of the X5 sport wagon worldwide to fix a front brake hose that may come loose because of vibrations from the front axle. A loose hose could result in the loss of brake fluid.
The recall will cover 84,000 X5s in the United States, although BMW expects that fewer than 100 will have the problem, a spokesman said.
The recalled vehicles were built between August 1999 and April 2002. |

| Given the amount of X5's in the USA now, I believe their claim of only 100 being affected, I mean, otherwise, there would be major failures of that thing, given the climate variations here and how one would drive an X5 (harder than other SUVs that's for sure...although, unlike other Bimmers X5's are being bought by mom n' pop suburban families so maybe not). X5 has the best brakes in the business though, regardless of faults or not. I dunno about the new Cayenne though, but I bet the Touareg has a musy feel to it (like all VW's). |

BMW::rolleyes:
There is not a single vehicle in the BMW lineup that hasn't been recalled in the last 4 years.

| But their (BMW) service is shoulders above Acura's. . . from my own experiences, of course |

From what I've heard, however, that might not be saying much... I'd guess quite a few have better service... |

| I personally have found Acura service to be superior to BMW. I owned a 3 series and a 5 series. The 3 was OK but the 5 had electrical gremlins that they never were able to totally fix in five years. Their customer service was nothing special. No more Bimmer's for me. I owned an Integra and it was perfect and I expect the same with my MDX. |

| BMW is doing the right thing. With only about 100 X5s affected, they still recall the vehicle. Look at Acura with the tranny failures, no recall but just an extended warranty on some models. BMW is a luxury brand and they will have to maintain that status. However, I guess for Acura as they always mention that it is near luxury, we do not get the same service. Acura really needs to step up and be like Lexus or Infiniti. Time to move up to the big leagues and actually become a luxury brand instead of just near luxury. |

I guess it comes down to individual dealerships. . . Wide World of Cars in Spring Valley, NY. . . unbelievable service.
I told them my brakes were squeaking. . . . they put in a new set. I told them my engine was having a hard time starting. . . they put in a brand new battery. All this while giving me a 330 for a loaner. And I'll have this service until 100K miles. That particular dealership is unbelievable!
The Acura dealership, which I will no longer use, I trust my mechanic more, is a whole other story. . . $200 for an oil change, VTM fluid and tire rotation. . . |

It needs to be, from what I understand, the X5 has broken all records for vehicle recalls. |

My experience has been just the opposite. I have a 99 328I with 63,000 miles on it and it has been nearly flawless (I don't count the two recalls it had as they were both preventative and of no significant nature - and BMW did the right thing by issuing them). And my BMW dealer has been a delight in every regard.
Contrast that with my MDX which has been in for unscheduled service about a dozen times in 17,000 miles and a dealer which is average at best...

I can't complain about BMW service. Since my wife and I have the MDX as our family hauler, I decided to order a BMW 325i to be our fun vehicle. I made this decision last July, and had to decide between the last of the 2002's and a the new model year 2003's. The dealer showed me a memo from BMW of North America outlining the changes for 2003, and the only thing that caught my eye was the addition of a 3-point seatbelt and headrest for the middle rear seat. I decided I wanted that feature for my 7-year old daughter, and ordered a 2003. By choosing the 2003, it cost me an extra $700 (cost increase over the MY 2002 car).
The car came in at the end of September. I sold my old car in advance, and went to the dealer to pick up the new 325. When I got there and looked the car over, the 3-point seat belt and headrest were not there. The dealer had no explanation, and I needed a car, so I took delivery.
This was on a weekend, so on the following Monday, I called BMW of North America and complained. I eventually talked to the VP in charge of 3-series marketing. He's the guy that wrote the memo my dealer showed me. He told me that the parts for the new seat belt had been back-ordered, and no 3-series from the first month of 2003 production had the seat belt or headrest. When I told him that was the feature that made me hold out for a 2003, he asked what he could do to make it right. I told him I wanted him to replace my back seat when the parts became available. He said he'd do some research to see if this was possible and call me back.
A week went buy before he called back. He told me that the seats couldn't be switched, so he had told my dealer to order me a new car. I got to drive the first one for 2 months as a "loaner," and then traded it, at no cost to me, for the new car with the 3-point seat belt and headrest.
How's that for customer service? |

| Yeah, whoever says that BMW service is not superior to Acura's needs to stop taking drugs. |

Absolutely excellent. I don't think you'll find Acura doing that. I'm sure that BMW doesn't always go this far either, but in your case they really came through. You obviously approached it in the proper fashion with them.
Maybe 2003 owners can ask Acura to replace their vehicles with the MDX's with XM Radio installed, as per the press release that said it was going to be available (not even a private memo) that they released before the 2003's came out. (I'm just kidding, of course.) Still no sign of it. |

It was all surprisingly simple. After working my way up to the VP, I politely explained to him that I could have ordered a 2002 and saved myself $700, but I specifically waited for a 2003 for the 3-point seat belt and headrest. I NEVER experienced any bad attitudes from anyone at the dealership or BMW of North America.
I did find out from my dealer, however, that he took some heat from BMW of North America. They told him he never should have shared the memo with me (even though I found it on a BMW enthusiasts web site before I got a copy from my dealer). They also told him he should have refused to let me take delivery of the first car and given me a real loaner car while a new one was ordered. |

That's ridiculous...what did they do, fly in a 'specialist' to rotate the tires or something for that price? |

| Friend of mine had a 2002 X5, and he has to go to the dealer to fix things almost every week in the first few months. Breaks, transmission and many other things. So annoying. |

| Sounds though as if the X5 does have problems |

I refused. . . I brought it to my own mechanic. . . who I trust! |

| My BMW had a couple squeeks, one in the suspension and the other in the passenger door area. BWM service didn't say "they are all like this"or the other favorite phrase from Acura service "It is a characteristic, they are all this way." They fixed it without so much of an excuse. My BMW has no rattles, thumps, squeeks, sloshes, clicks, and whatever other noises that MDX owners put up with. I am amazed at the sounds that come from my wife's MDX. It sounds like a tired old taxi cab. |

It does sound like X5 has problems. The dealership that I bought MDX from also has BMW dealership. I found out that if you have X5, you have to get an appointment to change oil a month or so ahead, because they are over packed with broken (need fixes) X5 SUVs, sorry SAVs. :)
This said, I also don't like the "they all sound like this" lame excuse of some Acura dealers. I had 2002 TL-S that rattled badly. They changed the windshield 3 times and same problem. Then I found that many TL owners had a similar problem... Hey, even my Mitsubishi dealer fixes the squicks and rattles!!! :)
This said, it is not a big deal for me - I love our MDX - every car has its little annoyances and there is nothing major in MDX for me. |
