Titanium Trim? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I am new to this board, and I am thinking about getting an MDX. I really like the interior but the one thing that bothers me is the "wood" trim. Does anyone know of any titanium trim replacement like in the new CLs? If so does anyone have any pics. If I get replacement trim I would not want to get the stuff that sticks on. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There are some websites that sell the titanium trim for the MDX. However, I don't think any of them are whole trim pieces. Almost all of them are the stick on types. For the whole trim pieces the price would be quite expensive. For example, for BMW, some sites sell the whole trim pieces made of carbon fiber and they go for about 1 grand to two.

pound83,

i also am not a fan of the fake wood.

i have gone to all the web sites i could find to try and get a trim kit that would cover the fake wood and also include additional trim pieces in carbon fiber or real aluminum (titanium would be great!).

none of these companies offer a trim kit that covers the fake wood.
some have said that they believe that there is not enough demand to justify the cost of fabricating these pieces.

if anyone finds a company that makes trim kits that include pieces that cover the fake wood, please let me know.

regards,

chris

Somehow I doubt they use real titanium, in case you were under that illusion.
It is quite expensive to machine. I am sure it is something that has a titanum look to it.

right, i really could care less about the material used. I was just referring to the look.

OK, and I agree, a metallic look could be very nice especially against an ebony (IMHO) interior.

True. . .

I had ordered the brushed aluminum dashkit from edashkit.com but after receiving a sample I cancelled my order. From the sample, the brushed aluminum kit was actually a spongy stick-on. Of course I realized the kit would not be real metal but I was expecting a hard plastic form-fit kit with 3M adhesive on the back.

I've done many searches and have yet to find a metallic-look replacement kit for the MDX.

BTW, the guys at edashkit.com were very cool about sending the sample and cancelling my order.

Kind of related to titanium trim… I really don’t understand why so many people complain about the wood, oh, I am sorry plood :-) . I recently got to drive the Lexus LS 430 (2002 or 2001 not sure) which is ~$60k and let me tell you, I thought the wood, plood or whatever is in there is terrible. The MDX stuff is so much better. To me plood in MDX is at least close to real wood (looks like it), the stuff in Lexus, I don't really know what a hell that is :13:

In fact the owner of that Lexus was admiring my MDX

Lexus uses real wood... not plood. I think your senses are reversed... :)

Anyway, if acura had used real wood, the solvent that spilled on the PLOOD trim around my nav screen wouldn't have melted like plastic does. Not that this is a reason to use real wood...

As a previous owner of a Lexus, our MDX or any Acura interior/s doesn't even come close to the Lexus interior...

Still love the MDX's utility... but I think I would have been just as happy with the Pilot... so no sunroof, no biggy... Can't stand where Honda/Acura puts their sunroof switch anyway.... Might as well put the switch down on the floor as far away from the sunroof as possible but still inside their cars... hahaha...

My wifes Benz has real wood. I'm not impressed... It has faded and cracked in a few years. I'll stick to the "plood" :4:

I believe Tim (hondacuraworld) told me he used to work for Jaguar and they had big problems with their real wood trim. The synthetic stuff, though not as attractive is in the long run more durable.

BINGO!

real wood should be used in the MDX, regardless of its durability-which should be covered by warranty anyway.

i agree that lexus, bmw, mb, jag, and other high-end/luxury brands have superior interiors and materials, in general, to the MDX.
this is ironic since acura was the first luxury japanese make to enter the u.s. market (and have surprising success).

if the real wood in any high-end car looks fake, it does so because most of us just don't see exotic wood in that form. also, there is a tendency to use too much protective acrylic (?) over the wood which often makes it look like plastic.

acura should offer optional trims, i.e. real carbon fiber, a variety of real woods, aluminum, titanium, etc.

IMHO, acura didn't really know which direction to go with the MDX-luxury or sport. considering that the MDX can be luxury or sport, acura should offer the customer either interior. for example, the ebony leather would work well in combo with a carbon fiber interior, or the saddle interior would look great with real wood interior.

companies like audi offer several available "atmospheres". this gives the customer an opportunity to almost custom order their interior. this makes their choice much more special.

some people believe that honda "left their A-game at home" when they designed the pilot so that acura's suv would still be the undisputed luxury version.

with all due respect to honda, each division should always bring their a-game. acura should be the division that offers features above and beyond honda, as does audi compared to vw and lexus compared to toyota.

only then will acura get the respect it has the engineering to achieve- and the exceptional customer loyalty that all companies strive for.

chris

Nowadays, it seems that every new car has to have some sort of carbon fiber or metal looking trim. If they don't, then they have plood. If you could buy a Yugo today, they'd offer a limited ($50 more) and it would have plood or plmetal on the dash. But I agree with cmdpm, Audi does a great job on their interiors.
