I've got the scoop from Acura on the NAV DVD upgrade... - Click HERE for Original Thread

I received a call from Acura today regarding my order for the new NAV upgrade DVD.
They have a new disc that is being released on April 3rd. There are additional POIs, and they have added a few more cities.
(No new news so far....we already knew this...)

However, they told me that they are already working on a MAJOR upgrade that is scheduled for release in October. This is what I (and many others) have been waiting for!!:2:

I have decided to forego the $152 dollar cost in April, and wait until the later release is out.....you may want to do the same.;)

Let's just hope that they are not blowing smoke, and that this really does happen. I would love to have all the POIs that the '03 model has........

I wonder what the price will be for a "MAJOR upgrade" release in Oct:eek:

The "major" upgrade -- is this major with respect to the 2002 Navi database or with respect to the existing 03 navi database?
DavidM
I do not know, but my guess is that they will be trying to make the '01-'02 coverage the same as the '03.....with equal POIs.

I figure that since the '03 is so new, they probably aren't trying to do anything with it yet.

If they can get the older versions to match the new versions, then future upgrades could be done simultaneously. (or so the theory goes.....)

I only wonder how they are going to accomplish it with two different systems.....seems like they would have to engineer the new disk for '01-'02 to be dual-layer. (And still operate in the player)
Currently, the '03 dual-layer DVD will not operate in the '01-'02 player.

You mean I will be lost for at least 8 or 9 more months? :8:

Oh well, After not being able to find my way in over 40 years of driving a few more months are better than never.

That seems to jive with what my dealer had told me a month ago with the additional and updated POI's. I am skeptical of the "major update". I honestly believe that without using a dual layer format for additional coverage I believe Acura is just stringing the 01-02 owners along. As soon as the new Nav system came out for the 03 I pretty much have accepted the Nav coverage that has been put forth.(It really is not that bad but could be better at times). Why would Acura engineers spend valuable time on an "antiquated" system.(bear in mind that Acura/Honda were the ones responsible for this by re-engineering after 3rd model year) Heck, when the 03 owners talk of pc slots and such I just shake my head. The 2 formats are obviously completely different which would require 2 sets of engineers to develop 2 different nav systems. Does not make financial sense IMO. They will continue to promise coverage until owners of the original owners of 01-02 MDX's have moved on. A person buying a used MDX will not be so adimant on coverage because they will be buying an "as is". Again this is my opinion. I will not give up hope that extended coverage will be available because I plan on keeping mine for at least 5 years. Notice that the dates given are such that owners will get "off their backs" for the rest of the year. PLEASE someone prove me wrong.:( :( :(

Never get a Honda or an Acura before the third year of the production run... They always add and fix so much to the third year when they could have/should have done it right from the start of the first production year.... SO ANNOYING!!! Sorry for changing the subject...

Well if the problem is a dual layer vs single layer they could put the east/mid on one side and the mid/west on the other side of a single layer dual sided disk.

That would be real easy except you would have to allow for some message etc. that a trip could not span that area unless you flipped the disk over. that would only effect those rare cross country trips that someone takes once in their MDX.

JUst called Acura yesterday about the upcoming upgrade they said to be next month but since 2001-2002 DVD's are single layer and 03s are dual layer, I don't think it'll have comparable data as 03s.

I asked if it's possible to change the 2001-2002 DVD DRIVER/PLAYER, she couldn't answer my question so I'll ask it here.

With the player changed to 03, I could just buy the 03 Player with its DVD or there's more to it? I mean that thing under the seat! Pull the plugs out and put the new one in. We might lost some functionality because the buttons are different but I'm for the data. I really wanted the data and interface of 03's but it's not justified to replace my MDX just for that.

Any suggestions?

cardingtr,

I have a co-wroker who went me with me to Greenwich Acura (stay away from there!!!) and they said he would need to replace the entire system in his 2003 tl - I guess they meant DVD player.

Interesting, I just brought my X, if Acura has a a new release coming in April, does that mean the dvd i have is outdated, and I have to buy a new version next month?

Yes it does but you don't have to buy it, especially if it does not contain anything you want in the way of coverage.

I got the same response at the auto show in Chicago. " Franky it would be easier to trade in you current MDX for a new one" ehhh no thanks. :)

So the April upgrade will not be an upgrade on the '03 POI's? How about the Oct upgrade?

......from the above posts here, that the older NAV DVD UNIT can only play single layer DVDs, then I'm almost certain that they will not be able to upgrade to the 7+million POIs and the expanded COMPLETE coverage for the entire United States as well as Major metros in Canada, without actually changing the DVD drive unit as well! (could possible be an expensive and complicated issue)

I have an '03 Navi, and was just wondering when I should think about upgrading.
