What's Happening To My MDX? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Our '03 MDX has 1,500 miles on it. First the driver's seat starts moving around - no big deal, then both sun visors pop out of their holders when they're put down - no big deal. Today my wife comes home and says the check engine light is on and it's hard starting - now I'm getting worried. I called the Acura dealer closest to me and I explain the latest problem. They say bring the vehicle in right away, but all their loaner cars are out. I tell them I need a car if they want my X and they say sorry. I call a second dealer and all their loaner cars are out. I made an appointment three days from now when my wife has a day off. I guess if my wife breaks down, she'll call Acura's 800 number, hopefully they will supply a loaner if needed.

Sounds like you may have a lemon claim. . . generally, you do have to schedule ahead of time for the loaner

A check engine light does not a lemon make!

Please let us know what happens!

Update - (it's now Thursday) my wife takes the MDX in because the check engine light is still on, still no loaners available at the dealership. The dealer says it should be ready by 5:00pm, which means she will spend almost 8 hours there. A couple of hours go by and they tell her the problem is with the emissions, but it will take longer than expected to fix and she will have the MDX back no later than next Monday. They arrange for a rental car ( a Ford Windstar). She drives the Windstar home and parks it in our driveway and puts on the emergency brake. She goes out to use the Windstar and the emergency brake has locked on. Her MDX is in the shop, the Windstar won't move and to make matters worst the Windstar is blocking our third car, a Honda S2000. I have to come home (our daughter had a dentist appointment), I can't brake loose the emergency brake, I actually bent it). I call the car rental agency, they apologize and bring out a Dodge Stratus, the best car they had. I've since called Acura to vent my frustrations. Acura told me regardless of whether a dealer has loaners available they can arrange for transportation, especially if they're asking you to bring your vehicle in as soon as possible. Acura assured my they will look into this and get back with me.

joemdx,

Sorry to hear about your trial and tribulations. If you haven't already done so, please talk to the general manager at the dealer and if you still don't feel statisfied that they are going to take care of you, then I would call Acura Customer Service and ask for their help. Good luck and keep us updated.

UPDATE #2 - Dealer calls today (Friday), says they think they have found the problem, a leak in the vacuum canister - an emissions related problem. The dealer says they will need to test the MDX for a while bringing it up to operating temperature and then letting it cool down and repeating the process several times. The dealer now thinks it should be ready to go on Monday if these tests go well.

Any ideas what I should ask Acura Customer service for? My '03 MDX laid up for five days while I'm driving a Dodge Stratus as a rental.

Oh yes, they fixed my front seat from moving around, but are waiting on clips to fix my sun visor.

I've had to have my X at the dealer several times (new water pump, power seat problem, new bumper [dealer smashed while replacing the water pump], etc.) since buying is in September 2002. Each time the dealer's loaner cars were not available, but the dealer did provide a Budget rental car which I believe was to be paid for by Honda.

I suggest you press the loaner car with the dealer and asked about a rental.

Also, remember you can and should contact Acura (Honda America) about such problems with the Dealer. See the Acura Web site for contact information. I contacted them about a problems with encountered with both the purchase and warrenty repairs. The dealership's general manager contacted me a few hours later. He was ready to listen to my concerns and was willing to help resolve my concerns.

I just took my TLs in for war work and an oil change. They were out of rentals to but they called up Enterpise and had a new Dodge caravan delivered so I could drive it for the day... Oh my god what a pile of crap that car is.

UPDATE #3 - Well it's now Tuesday afternoon, another couple days gone by and the dealer is still working on my '03 MDX (6 days in the shop now). I talked with the dealer on Monday and they said they are waiting on a tool that measures vacuum leaks. Until they get the tool they won't know it they've fixed the problem.

If there's some good news, I called Acura Customer Service on Monday morning to voice my frustration. I told them I would feel a little better if there was a rear wind deflector on my MDX when I picked it up and they said no problem. Of course, I assumed I would be picking it up on Monday. I guess I'll be making another call to Acura's customer service tomorrow.

Tomorrow will make 7 days, I hope there's not more of a problem then their letting on to be.

UPDATE #4 - The Last One - Well after 7 days my MDX is back in the garage. Everything seems to be working again. I was a little disappointed that the gas light came on 10 miles after I left the dealership. My wife thought there was about a quarter tank when she brought it in, no big deal I guess.

In dealing with Acura Customer Service they seemed very professional. When I asked for the rear wind deflector to be put on my MDX, it wasn't a problem. They also worked a deal for me on body side moldings.

Hopefully, it's clear sailing now, or should I say clear driving now, when the rain stops falling in Southern California.

no other keys have a security chip..........just 5 other keys and a sears pocket screwdriver...........

Smas - I have three different Acura/Honda keys all with the smart chips on my key chain and don't have a problem. I'd call Acura Customer Service, they will call your dealer and find out what's wrong. Has your check engine light ever come on? My problem was emissions related. Good Luck.
