Hi all,
I just received my rear view cam and have pondered about the location for mounting. It is the Santecca 301, and is a small oval shape unit.
I have the rear spoiler, and it doesn't really fit under there very well, and the rear window washer is also in that high center area.
I know MDXtrous has his under the bumper, but with my hitch, it doesn't leave a lot of room there, and was hoping for a bit of a higher position to enhance the viewing angle.
Has anyone mounted an aftermarket cam, and if so, where...I would really like to avoid cutting of MDX...anyone mounted inside the glass? suggestions please? |

In other threads, Sam from (productinquirynow@yahoo.com) had demonstrated a unit mounted to the upper center of the license plate frame, with the hidden wiring running along-side the wiring for the rear lights...
In these threads, there is a photograph that looks excellent...
That seems more reasonable than mounting it under the bumper, especially if one does off-road traveling...

Curtsan,
My aftermarket rear view camera was mounted by drilling a hole through the Acura "A" badge inside the "caliper" figure. This location looks good and makes the camera theft and weather proof. If I could do it over I would mount it lower. I get a good wide angle and can easily see if somebody is behind me, but it is too high for viewing a bumper or other close and low object in a parking. situation. |

I hate to be a pain and ask the constant question, but would you post a picture? |

Thanks guys for the insight, I am open to all considerations at this point , as I will only get one chance at this. I am a bit skeptical of
cutting through the exterior (rear "A" area), although probably the best vantage point. I would really have to figure out a "bullet-proof" way of sealing it for water and dust getting in..I'm sure a professional body shop would have no problem with this...
Any other ideas or pictures out there, would love to see them, ...I know I'm asking alot here, but if anyone could post a pic of their actual camera mounting position, and then one of the screen showing the view from that position, it would be great to contrast the looks ....I guess it comes down to whether to "cut..or not to cut"...that is the question.... |

| I should receive my camera tomorrow and would also love to see some pics of alternate locations to mount it. |

Curtsan, I don't know if the above link will get you there, (I'm not totally computer knowledgeable) but there are pictures of back up camera mounting and views from the Nav screen. I'm going thru the same thought process as you. I hope to get the unit and camera mounted this coming weekend. I don't want to put any holes in the rear hatch. Also, from one of those photos, it looks like the camera from Sam is in a case.

I'm sure appreciative of everyones's viewpoints. As you get some installs completed , pics would be great to give the rest of us some suggested install types and applications.
I have been thinking about a location inside the window either right under the 3rd high mount brake light, as close to the glass as possible, or right on top of the plastic interior trim (at the base of the glass) just to the driver's side of the wiper...) tough to balance mounting location and quality picture given the shape of the vehicle's rear end and glass curve.... |

I mounted my camera under the third (top) brake light inside the window at the suggestion of my installer. I hadn't previously thought of that location but didn't want to mount it in or through the license plate or have it hanging outside. It works ok although there is some glare and it gives a higher view field. I've posted some photos on www.hpphoto.com login: pandacan password: manila. Look for an album named: 01mdx RES

mdefrances:
Thanks for posting the pics...I like the location, especially being inside vs. outside (theft/elements, etc)
Could youdescribe the glare a bit more...is is in the daytime? What about backing up with your foot riding the brake, does the red brake light create any ill effects? I assume you ran wiring though the tailgate and in through the rubber wiring harness in the upper left hand corner ? Thanks again for your posting... |

curtsan,
there was a kind of a washed out look as we viewed the house across the street on the screen when we first looked through the back up camera on Sunday morning. (We picked up the car from the installation on Saturday night). I'm pretty sure it was because of the brightness of the morning. The house across the street was in direct sunlight and we were in the shadow of our house. If I knew how to do it, I would adjust the gain on the camera to darken it a bit, if that could be done. I don't believe it was totally about the window, although it was kind of dirty from the rain we had a few days ago. We washed the car that afternoon and my wife drove it today (Tuesday) and said the view was much clearer. Today was kind of overcast so that might explain it.
rliggayu,
we brought the X home all RES'd up for under $200. The installers at my local Best Buy store gave me a break on the labor because they had a ball installing everything, seeing it work, and had done work for me before (installed the Blaupunkt DVD player and the Clarion flip down monitor). They were up to the challenge and even had a lot of onlookers wondering what was going on. We must have been the first X to get wired in the neighborhood. Because ours was the prototype installation, the deal was good. The next one will cost more, probably. '

I too will eventually pick up a camera for the Nav-tv tuner. I searched around and found several on the internet. This one could be cleanly mounted on the licenses plate like the one above: http://www.mobilevideo4less.com/Mer...ct_Code=RVC4000
I would like the camera to be installed within the cabin for security and reliablity purposes. But if the camera has IR LEDs (like the Santeka sp?), I think the IR light will likely reflect back off the glass and affect the picture quality. I believe a camera with low light capabilities without IR LEDs will be better for an interior mounting.
I will likely get a camera try it in several places without actully mounting it, try a variety of lighting conditions, to determine it's final resting place.
Not completely sure if I want or need color. B/W cameras usually perform better in low light.
Maybe others could also mention other cameras they've seen on the market that also might be used in this application. |

| I recently mounted a rear view camera on my CL-S. I used an Accelevision color bullet camera. It is the shape and size of a lipstick, waterproof, has 0.2 lux sensitivity, switches to B/W below 1 lux, viewing angle 100 horizontal, 72 vertical, and 130 diagonal. I have found that the night time viewing is excellent even in the lowest light. I mounted it in the bumper peeking over the license plate. It not noticeable unless you're looking for it and it has a great view. |
