Just was wondering if there 's something wrong with my mdx.. Cant seem to maintain the speed going uphill on the freeway even if i pedal it to the floor.. cant never go over 80 mph. feel very slow driving on the overpass or incline. And plus car slid abit while taking the pedal off the brake and apply the gas pedal, almost felt like driving a stick again. Lack of power .. anyone feel this way about their mdx.. Please help and reply before i take it for check up.. Thanks in advance...

For a 240 hp engine, this shouldn't happen! Make sure you're not towing a semi and that you're in Drive and not in Park:)
Kidding aside, just check your hand -leg actually:)- brake as it might be on. If that won't help, you should better see your dealer fast...on a second thought you should see him either way, as driving with your parking brake on wouldn't be too healthy for your baby:)
Good luck and keep us informed! |

While uphill performance in 5th gear is sluggish, and could cause the car to slow until it hits 4th and gets more oomph, the fact that you have your foot to the floor and aren't getting anywhere sounds WRONG to me. Are you "punching" it to the floor, or gradually giving it more gas til you get to the floor -- you want it to kick down from overdrive (5th).
What happens if u use D4? |
| Our MDX effortlessly reaches 80 mph, so I think you have a problem. I don't think this should happen, even in fifth (though Worm has a good point). |
Of course it shoudn't happen, regardless what gear you're in...the computer that assists the shifting would sense the difference between rpm and gas intake (gas pedal being floored) and would downshift immediatelly...so no need to do it yourself (that's why they call it automatic):)
Again, check your brakes and then we'll go from there... |
| i punch it to the floor, even the rpm rise it to 4th but still the car is climbing slow as hell. feel like i should be far to the right lane where all the semi is going up hill. i mean i love the look of this car i wouldn't trade it for the ML or x5. but whenever i see these car going uphill i instant i floored the pedal without hessitation , still climbing like turtle. i call dealer, dealer said they cant detect anything wrong with it till they see the "engine lamp light on". I mean i been driving this route home for the past 10 years or so. My other civic Si and accord has no problem going 90 up this hill but this mdx, aight!.. First i thought of the weigh but again with 240 hp!! Heck, dont know what 's going on.. |
Then that ain't right -- there's plenty of power in 4th going up hills. You won't rocket, but your speed will increase. I haven't been > 80mph, but can tell you that up the grades in the bay area (esp east bay -- altamont pass and such) that 4th is NO PROBLEM with accelerating up to 75/80mph.
Is the engine bogged down (low rpms) or is it revving high (tranny problem)? It sounds like it's just a plain ol' dog. |
Take it to the dealer Pkt!
Who cares about the check engine light as long as your car performs worse than a KIA (any KIA owners around?:))
Your wheels get hot? Then probably your brakes are at fault.
Engine revving up but still no power? Clutch/tranny problem.
Engine not revving up? Fuel/brake problem.
Everything else fine but still no power? Check gravity around your car :) |
| Ask the dealer to check the computer module, or dyno your car and show the dealer the power output curve if there seems to be a problem. |
| Also check the fuel filter. It might be gummed up. |
I agree with the general consensus here that there is, without doubt, something wrong with your MDX. There is enough HP in the MDX to enable you to go up almost any freeway hill easily at 80 and I would bet 100+. Do not accept any excuse from the dealer...tell them to FIX it! And get a loner while your at it!

Worm, You haven't been over 80?!!?? Ohmegod, I don't spend much time under 80!
Anyway, as for speed uphill. Something is wrong. I drove my car back from Alabama through the Mounbtains of West Virginia and Pennsylvania with no problem. If I'm cruising at 80, I can punch it up to 110+ easily with good acceleration.
Unless you're going up Mount Washington or the like you should have no problem. |

Sad but true --- have always had wife and 5-month-old in the car w/me, since it's usually my wife's car (or so she thinks).
Just haven't had the opportunity to hit the open road without the family.
So, my tall/low-power 5th-gear comments should be considered in light of the fact that I'm talking power curve from 60mph up to "honey, aren't you driving a little fast", which is somewhere around 75. |
We know what you're talking about: matrimonially limited speed:)
You're lucky...mine is set around 70mph:( |
I understand and respect your predicament Worm and others. Me? I just don't listen too well.. :D
The MDX is mine and I'm alone often. If you're driving down 93 from New Hampshire to Boston, it's quite difficult to stay under 80.
Actually, ever since my wife first drove the vehicle, she has been bugging me about "upgrading" her Accord! YIPES! |

I JUST CAME FROM A TRIP TO DEEP CREEK LAKE PASSING TO CUMBERLAND,MD THERE WAS ALOT OF STEEP HILL AND DESCENT AND ELEVATION OF 1200FT OVER,I WAS DRIVING AT 75MPH AT D5 HALFWAY ON THE HILL IWAS LOSING POWER(THEN TO MAKE THINGS WORST A LEXUS V8 PASS ME) IWAS ALARMED,THEN MAYBE I SHOULD
DOWNSHIFT TO 4D VIOLA! RPM UP TO 3000 SPEED/POWER UP.QUESTION CAN YOU DOWNSHIFT TO 4D FROM 5D IN 65-70 MPH
WILL IT DAMAGE MY TRANSMISION PLS. ENLIGHTEN ME.I HAVE READ
WORM'S POST AND PKT...I WAS NICE DRIVE ANYBODY FROM MARYLAND I RECOMMEND DEEP CREEK LAKE.. |
| Not a problem. D5 is just overdrive -- best for fuel economy but not for oomph. As long as you're not redlining it you can downshift to D4 no problem, and at 75mph you won't be near redline in D4. D4 is the way to climb the long grades to maintain power. |
| So Pkt, what was the outcome of your power loss problem? |
I set my cruise at 80 mph going from North to South CA. The MDX went up the gravevine grade without any hesitation or increase in RPM. I even press the lightly on the petal to pass all the sedans on the fast lane, going up to 95 mph at one point before I ease it out of fear of CHP. The MDX has plenty of power and oommph.
Let us know about the outcome of your MDX.
Cheers :):):) |
When I first got my MDX, I noticed a problem with "up hill power". However, I haven't noticed it in some time. My MDX is almost 4 months old and just had the 7500 mile service. |

I assume you are using Premium gas! This well make a difference in your performance. |

| Like with any car, put it in 3rd or 4th to get that needed power. You need to take it out of overdrive. |

Correction:
There is no need to touch the shift lever. It is an *automatic* transmission, and will shift itself into a lower gear if it is necessary!
If it does not, it needs a repair.
Sure would like to know the outcome of that power loss problem, pkt. |
| Actually what Acura should have done was put in the 5 spd auto sequential shift like in the TL and CL! |

Agree with Crem. No need to do anything. The automatic transmission should take care of it, i.e. down shift to 4 and then when gaining enough speed go back to 5. Grade Logic should also kick in to handle the uphill situation. Unless there is constant downshifting, then it would be good to downshift to 4, but that is not for lacking of power, but more for not having the auto trans to switch gears frequently.
I would bring to the dealer for checking.
Good lucks :) |

I can reach 80 uphill easily towing my boat. You have some kind of problem...get it to the dealer for a quick fix.
Let us know the results, please. |
