If I didn't buy the touring package? What kind of weight can the X handle?

You can tow the same amount of weight with a base or touring model of the MDX. With both models it is strongly recommended that you add an Acura OEM towing hitch which includes both a transmission and power steering coolers. If you are towing a boat the tow package is a must to preserve your factory warranty.

Many of us (me included) have only installed a hitch without the coolers because we only use the hitch for mounting bike carriers.

You can get a hitch at u-Haul for between $90.00 to 140.00 installed depending on the rating of the hitch.

Acura specs the MDX at 4,500 lbs max for a boat when equipped with tow package. What does touring package have to do with towing ability???

that's the main reason I bought the MDX. I am finishing up installing my towing package this weekend (hopefully). Regarding $90 UHaul hitches...probably Ok for bikes. Boat should have the coolers AND the OEM Acura hitch spread the load out really well by attaching in the middle as well as the sides. It's a very nice kit and can be had for around $500.

Boat is a tournament-style, full-inboard ski boat, single axle, no brakes, well under 4000 lbs, probably close to or under 3500 lbs.

Wish me luck!

I too bought my MDX for my boat - a 3200 lb open bow ski boat. Just got the MDX so haven't pulled it yet, but I checked a lot of comments on this board re: this topic.

Lots of v. positive comments - one guy noted it struggled up the hills w/ a 3500 lb boat, but all had success pulling those size boats.

I note that the 4500 lb towing capacity is WITH 4 150 lb adults and some gear - many cars give a towing capacity assuming only 1 person in the car. The real towing capacity w/ 4 in is much lower. Not the case w/ the MDX.

I have the factory towing package which is a little more expensive but does not have the unsightly angled ends hanging down like the aftermarket tow receivers. I just took my Nitro fish and ski boat out for the first time with the MDX. It weighs about 3000 lbs without all my tackle and gear. It towed the boat very well. The tongue weight caused the rear to drop about 2 inches, hardly noticeable. Still relatively quick. A little bouncy when the freeway was rough. Had no problems at the boat launch either.

I also used my MDX for the first time pulling my 3500 lb inboard ski boat this weekend. Pretty nice ride on the road (ramp is only 7-8 miles away). It seemed to struggle a little pulling the boat out, but that was probably only because the sound was different than my previous tow vehicle. Also, the exhaust pipe tips didn't have as much clearance to the water, making it a chore to get the trailer in enough AND have the exhaust out of the water. I'm sure the Sequoia would pull better, but boat-pulling is less than 1% of our driving, and the MDX is MUCH better for the other 99%.
