Sunroof - Why so small?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Anyone know why Acura didn't use a larger sunroof on the MDX. There is definately room for a larger one. Most other vehicles I looked at before purchasing my X had a larger sunroof.

Maybe they use the same sunroof in all of their cars for economies of scale?? I don't know, just a thought.:27:

i agree that the sunroof is small. this was one reason that discouraged me from buying the MDX in '01. i had a toyota sequoia and the sunroof was big- i loved it.

i think that it may have to do with the space between the steel beams in the roof. this is related to rollover protection.

although if toyota can offer a huge sunroof and still design a strong roof-why can't acura?

incidentally, honda pilot owners who are looking into getting aftermarket sunroofs are finding this out.

I agree, it is most likey related to the integrity of the structure.

I agree the sunroof is small, but it's not a show-stopper for me.

When we test-drove a Subaru Forester recently for a second car, we were impressed by how HUGE the sunroof is. The difference in its size with the MDX was, literally, night and day!

Therefore I prefer to consider it a moonroof providing a little atmosphere and a view. During the mid-day we often close the shade because its too hot so a bigger one would even be worse. On the other hand a little larger at night could be nice.

Six of one and a half dozen of the other:rolleyes:

Hmm. I hadn't given it a thought... the sunroof is fine to me... But the structural integrity factor makes sense to me...

I think the sunroof is to cut some cost on the production cost. Larger sunroof = more research to retain structural integrity. The MDX is a near luxury SUV, Mercedes and some others have huge sun roofs but the amount of research and testing is probably double the cost for the MDX. IMO, the sunroof is small but hey I just think about the money I saved also with the price of the MDX.

The sun roof could also be smaller than expected so that the overhead DVD monitor, if installed, is not too far back.

The sunroof size never bothered me. I think it is fine. You may find you don't even open it that much.

The sunroof is the exact same size as my TL so the "sharing parts" thing can also be true.

Agree! Same size as my 01 Accord. ;)

I've had sunroofs in a bunch of cars and have always been surprised how little I've used them. Only a few not too hot or not too cold days in spring and fall are really appropriate for having the sunroof open. I think it is most useful for letting out heat in the broiling summer sun so the A/C can do its job more easily. Of all the features I like about the MDX, the sunroof is fairly far down on my "must have" list.

If the sunroof would fully retract when opened it would be ok. The thing I don't like is the fact I see a few inches of the sunroof 'sticking' out when I open it. That's just poor engineering.

It's an Asian thing. . . we're generally smaller framed people:p

I rarely open the sunroof. Just open the visor portion to look up at the sky to see if a CHP airplane is overhead. They seem to find the "blindspots" pretty well when they are pacing you. :3:

I rarely open the moonroof, but I enjoy the perceived spaciousness of having the open sky above me. That's why even folks who rarely open the moonroof would still prefer a larger one.

I'm glad that the MDX moonroof is the same size as the TL's -- I just swapped the visor from my TL to my MDX -- looks great on the X, looks really, really bad on the TL!
