Basically, you don't eat any carbs at all. You will eat only protein which will force the body to breakdown excess carbs from your storage. Also, you will rarely ever be hungry since you are training your body to process protein, which breaks down much slower than carbs.

As with all weight reduction diets, Atkins is designed to help you to eat fewer calories. Most nutritionists and biologists still believe that a balanced diet of carbs, protein, and healthy fats is best. Limiting calories within those groups can be a healthier way to achieve results similar to Atkins.

Keep in mind that your brain runs on carbs and that you are putting a significant stress on your liver by eating excessive protein and fat and almost no carbs. The jury is still out on the long-term health effects. Most people who are successful at keeping weight off for life dramatically increase their level of physical activity and eat a more sensible diet based primarily on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

I agree, I believe Aktins is most helpful for those who need to lose the fat quickly, mainly for health reasons. (Strain on the heart, other med. problems, etc.).
But the best way is the combination of exercise and sensible nutrition.
High protein means many will turn to red meat, eggs, etc. which have their own risks with regards to cholesterol and sodium. I know Atkins says these things are not all true, and high protein input can be supplemented with other food. And they claim that cholestrol levels can be maintained to normal levels. There is contraversy needless to say.
Another problem, is following weight loss with Aktins, one should go to a reasonable routine of exercise and sensible eating to keep the fat off. The problem is, they are starting out a ANOTHER routine, and failure will bring their weight right back to where it was.
But quicker results with Aktins can not be overlooked, it is the real advantage.
Whether is should be used for 'maintenance' is another issue entirely.

The best way in my opinion is moderation, moderation, and moderation. You can eat anything just watch how much of it you eat. Set the limit, like 2000 calories a day. Exercise, 15-20 minutes three times a week. You WILL lose weight.

I am not fan of Atkins and any other single-type-of-food-eating diets. I just don’t think the high protein diet or any other diet where you eat only one type of the food is healthy at all. Your body needs everything: protein, carbohydrates, fat etc. Key is to exercise self control.

Eat variety of foods, as on food pyramid and watch how many calories a day you eat. Exercise regularly.

It is a life style change, not a “do it once and get back to usual” type of the deal.

I agree. In college I was part of a Pritikin-sponsored study that lasted 16 weeks, included cooking classes, running 5 miles every day, 4 treadmill tests, 4 hydrostatic weighing sessions. I lost 20 lbs, wife lost 10 lbs. After it was over we went to a football game and I ate a Hoagie and got sick. The "after study" results showed that moderation in diet and daily exercise is the key.

I am 5'8 used to weigh 175 pounds with 14% body fat. Now I weigh in at a very trim 152 with 8% body fat. How did I do it? Simple! Joined a gym and started to work out. When I used to be in high school I was very in to working out because I played sports. But after that I just "slacked" off. College was nothing but a blur because all we did was party. And my diet in college consisted of crappy dorm foods, pizza's and cheese steak subs.
Anyways, I ran across my old lacrosse buddy from highschool at a bar one night. I noticed how good he looked and he basically told me that he joined Gold's Gym and have been working out pretty intensely. For some reason that was the beginning of the end to my flabby gut days. Now I can say that I am in very good shape.

Here is a few of my work-out routines.
Monday-back,biceps,abs,60 minute cardio.
Tuesday-chest,triceps,abs,swim.
Wednesday-quads, hamstrings, abs, 60 minute cardio.
Thursday-shoulders, abs, 60 minute cardio.
Friday-calfs, glutes, abs, swim.
Saturday-off
Sunday-off

To obtain that "6 pack or 8 pack" you have to remember to eat right. Everybody has muscles, but how well your muscle tone shows through is greatly depended upon your body fat %.
I eat atleast 5-6 times a day, they are very small portions. The key is to fool your metabolism to burn off your excess body fat. If you eat many small meals you keep your metabolism at a very high rate. Unless you were born with an unusually low metabolism...
Remember when working out, go for the form instead of the weight. I see so many guys benching 400 pounds but they bounce it off their chest. A good form is crucial to proper muscle training.
So theres my 2 cents........eat alot of small portions, lift with proper form, and cardio.........do alot of cardio.

Good Luck!!

You've got me motivated. What do you think of alternating weights one day and running the off-weight days? When I was road racing (cycling) I rode every day and did weights every other day. The down side to cycling was the "middle" factor due to all the carbo loading for events. When running, the appetite gets repressed, but cycling stimulates the desire for carbos.

Train like a boxer, but stay out the ring. You will look and feel great! Have not really tried it, but has always made sense to me!

I am glad to hear that you are motivated!!
Honestly, I am not a certified personal trainer so I cannot in good conscience tell you what you should be doing. But as far as alternating between weights and cardio is a good idea. If you are trying to lose weight though........I suggest that you emphasize the cardio more than the weight training. Remember for cardio, you have to find your target heart rate and keep it elevated for a while to burn fat. To find your target heart rate is easy; it's when you start sweating. So say you are jogging and you start to break a sweat......keep jogging for another 30 minutes or so because you have hit your target heart rate. If your joints do not like the pounding of jogging I suggest a low-impact exercise like the bike or elliptical machine. Swimming is also a very good low-impact cardio exercise.
As far as weight training goes, I do 12-16 reps on light weights. I don't usually max out. That way I build the long lean muscles that help me get the muscle endurance that is needed for lacrosse or any kind of sports. I have also been trying some fast-twitch muscle training techniques that the Russians have used and it's been working for me as well. And one more thing, eat a good breakfast loaded with fruits and whole grains, stay off the carbs, don't eat sugar loaded foods(Snickers, M&M's, MilkyWay's)and don't eat before bedtime!!! I don't eat past 6 p.m.
GOOD LUCK!!!
