| I am about to Format the drives on my computer. And I know how to but I am just looking for some suggestions? I am running XP Pro, Do I need to make a system start up disk? Also what format should I use Fat32, or are the other ones better? Suggestions would be helpful. |

You should make a system startup disk or CD as a safety meausre so you can boot your computer.
I would choose NTFS files system over FAT 32. |

Hi Ace3:
___Set up your BIOS so that you can boot up from the CD/DVD-ROM drive first, FD second, and HD third. Insert your Windows XP Pro disc and boot off of it. No need for a start up disc if your disc is bootable which it should be.
___NTFS adds security on a file by file basis but you lose the capability to see the drive with a std. Win98 SE – Millennium boot disc + you lose the capability of using some of the older FAT32 tools you may be used to when running the OS and data on whatever partition under NTFS.

You can partition the hard disk into suitable partitions (drives), and then could format the C: drive w/ NTFS, and the remainder using FAT32. That is what I did on a recent upgrade to a 60 MG
hard-drive. |

ace3, did everything go as planned? No problems I hope...
I strongly recommend doing what xcel suggested, expecially setting up your BIOS re: boot sequence... |

Changing the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot first from a CD is ok, as long as you have a CD that is bootable. If the XP CD is an upgrade, you can't boot from it, only from a CD that has a full ver of a windows OS, or from a CD that you previously made as a startup CD. It is always a good thing to have a bootable CD or floppy for the current ver of the OS you are running - in case your HD crashes.
excel - good point about partitioning the HD. |

| Everything went as to planned, I followed what xcel suggested (I probably would of done that any ways) I think my Xp is just an upgrade. No the UPDATES :3: . I think I can get my PC back to normal in a couple weeks. I hope. One last question how do I make a start up disk? Does it have to be a Floppy? |

Using a floppy is the easiest. Do this:
- put a blank disk in the floppy drive (or one with data you no longer need)
- double click on "my computer" icon on your desktop.
- rt click 3 1/2" floppy drive icon
- select format
- check the box at the bottom of the menu next to 'create MS DOS startup disk'
- click start
- click ok
that's it - good luck |
