My understanding from the ML forums is that the steering clamps are a known problem and people have definitely had power steering failures in the past. However, as this article says, I haven't heard about the fluid actually igniting and causing an engine fire. Still merits an investigation, though. And I'm disappointed that the problem lasted for three model years.

If P/S fluid hits a hot catalyst it will flash-ignite immediately. Fortunately, the volume of P/S fluid is small and the fire ends pretty quickly most of the time. Though it does scare the crap out of you.
In an earlier life, I spent some time testing various quick connect fittings for P/S systems and when they let go it resulted in a flash fire about 30% of the time. After about the third fire, we rigged a catalyst shield and a remote extinguisher.
Hard to imagine that Mercedes let this one slip by... |
