Now that the on-line prices are less than $ 600 for the Olympus
C-5050 digital camera (w/ 5 megapixels), I am thinking of purchasing it. The camera reviews give it great marks, but I would be interested in any opinions from folks who have purchased this camera recently. How do you like it, and would you recommend it? In addition, which memory type do you use in the camera since it takes 3 different types of memory. Thanks. |

Don't have the 5050 but I do have the 4040. GREAT camera. I've used Canon, Kodak, and Olympus and the Olympus, IMHO, is the best. I like the LCD screen pivits, and it takes various memory sticks. Plus it's a removable drive that you can copy pics to and from.
Based on my 4040 experience, I'd get the 5050 with no reservations.

| I will post a reply on my question, since I have now purchased the Olympus C-5050 camera. After two days of figuring out how to use it, I give it high marks. It will do anything one desires to do as far as doing it in automatic mode or for those more sophisticated in setting up all parameters (speed, f-stop, white light, etc.). It is a very sturdy built camera (heavier than the kodak cameras I am used to), and looks nice as far as the black alloy body. It takes 3 types of memory cards/sticks which is a plus for those that already have memory cards. I got it for $ 590 off of Ebay. |

I got the Olympus Camedia C2040Z. Olympus have EXCELLENT optics. Mine is an old Digi camera but has 2.1 Megapixel..MUCH more than other camera back in the days. It still take excellent pics..Some of the pics I posted on this board are taken on this camera. |

| I have the Olympus C-730 and love it. It has 3.3 Megapixel and the pictures are great. I think the 5 Megapixel will be a little overkill, but I'm sure excellent. My oringinal 1.2 Megapixel Sony Camcorder took excellent pic's. |

| I heard that Olypus is coming out with the 750 (4 MP) and 10X optical Zoom. But I was leaning towards the 740 (3MP 10X optical zoom). Price difference about $100. What do you recommend? Anyone have the 740? |

m2pc, I just got the c-740 and love it. Full disclosure: I have absolutley no skill in photography, but have yet to take a bad pic with this camera. If you've got some talent you'll love it too because there are lots of customized settings that a guy like me has yet to figure out. "Auto" does everything I need so far.
I love the size and feel of the camera too. It's very easy to work with and has a quality feel. The 10x zoom is awesome.
So far, I've only printed out to an Epson inkjet printer on somewhat nicer-than-usual paper (not a photo printer, not photo paper) and the results look fine.
If you're going to print out extra-large prints, the extra megapixel of the 750 will help, but if you think you'll likely keep things down to 5x7 or less then no regular folks (non-photo pros) should ever be able to tell the difference.
Be sure to get A) rechargable batteries and B) a bigger card than the one that comes with the camera. I bought a big 256mb card and have used about 3/4 of it already!
Now all I have to do is figure out what printer to get. I'm hoping there will be a good quality, reasonable-cost printer that can print direct from an xD card.
Good luck whichever way you decide to go! |

The 10X optical sounds really good. The c-5050 only has a 3X optical (and 10X total w/ the 3.3 digital). I just started looking for a photo printer as I see that my current HP deskjet is not made for making quality photos. Folks may wish to read the excellent reviews on the following site as they review most of the current photo printers. After looking at the reviews and costs, I have narrowed my choices down to the HP Photosmart 7550 ($ 299, new model), Canon i950 ($ 249), or the Olympus P-400 ($ 459 @ amazon).

I use a Hewlett Packard HP Deskjet 952C and it prints excellent pictures even though it was made for regular prints. |

| Thanks Blackura for the feedback. I am going to go with either the 740 or 750.:4: |

Not sure about the Olympus printer but everyone raves about the i950. The HP is better if you need to print out a lot of black and white text but i950 is much better (and cheaper ink) for photos only. Check out this link to great site with forums discussing printers. DP Review - Printers . I am going to get one in another month or so. |

I have an Olympus C700 (the original UltraZoom!)- I've had it for about 1.5 years, and I love it! With regards to the C750 - you can check it out on the Olympus website.

Talking about printers, other day since I got sick of printing, I tried from all places Meijer Photo Artoo-Detoo (well I made that name up, influence of word association thread :D )
http://www.meijer.com/photo/ditto.html
And quality was very good. The machine that they have accepts all cards, CD, CF, SD etc. I printed 4x6 and 8x10 and was very happy with results. I will stop printing at home. The 4x6 is $.32 and 8x10 was $5.99... |

We have the HP 7350 and it does a great job. I really like the tray that you load up with the 4X6 border-less photo paper.
Dev... Thanks for the Meijer tip. We don't have them around us but they do in the Toledo area where we are setting up an apartment for our daughter's junior and senior year. I have been planning on getting her a digital camera but I didn’t want to do the printer and stuff. This would be a good way for her to get prints made.
Has anyone seen these machines elsewhere?
Thanks

Canon i950 here. Absolutely gorgeous photos. Runs quiet and about 1.5 minutes for an 8x10. Can't tell results from a professional lab. Never tried to print text with it.
For photos you will not be dissappointed. I think I paid $231 with shipping off the internet.
Also have the Minolta 7Hi. Great camera. Love the 28mm zoom lens, 5MP, black body and just enough heft to it. The 64MB buffer is great before the card. You can run off 4 - 5MP Tiffs without stopping. Unfortunately, it still is about $1,000. |

| After reading a zillion reviews and posts (on all the various web sites) from folks that have photo printers, I have decided to buy the Canon i950. A number of web sites have indicated that this is the hottest selling (in addition to being a top-rated printer) photo printer now---due to photo quality and cost combination. It is also on back-order on some sites, but amazon.com has it listed at $ 234.99 (w/free shipping). I will use my older HP Deskjet (882C) for text, and only use the new Canon for photos. |

Hey, are you an alum or a fan? Good to have a connection down in FLA. Put out a block M flag if you haven't already! |

I second ACCMDX's comments about the Canon i950 photo printer. I have used the printer for two weeks now, and it is a fantastic photo printer-->quiet, fast, and fantastic photo printing. It has to be one of the better buys for the $ in photo printing (I paid $ 235).
I have also used my Olympus C-5050 camera now for a few weeks. It has a great number of settings to accomodate the
needs of any digital photographer in my opinion. I believe the only drawback to this camera is the 3X optical lens (and 10X total w/ 3.3 digital). I think a 5X + optical lens would have been nice to have. |

Wow! no kidding. I had a friend with an i950 print out a few photos from my G3 (and these were downsized and compressed jpgs that were emailed) on Canon PPP paper from the i950. Result? - much, much better (basically film-like IMO other than the texture of the paper) than my HP Photosmart 1115 - not even close. True my HP is almost 2 years old (newer HPs may be better) but the difference was dramatic. I am going to upgrade in the next few weeks without hesitation. |
