Re-installing wood steering wheel - Click HERE for Original Thread

Three weeks ago we had a big snowstorm and I was driving real fast hoping my VSA would prevail over laws of physics. Regrettably it didn't and I hit a traffic light pole causing several thousand $$ damage to my 3 months old MDX and proving that SUV's indeed create false sense of security. :1pat: Trying to find a silver lining in this accident I ordered wood steering wheel from Tim and asked my body shop to install it. However, yesterday as I was driving my repaired car from the shop with new beautiful steering wheel I noticed that when I drive straight it is tilted to the left. So I am wondering if anyone had the same problem, i.e. steering wheel not installed straight, how easy would it be to re-install it, can I do it myself, would I need another set of Torx screws that are supposed to be discardable, could it be that my car needs alignment?
I drove it for several days after accident and didn't notice any alignment issues. I even checked my tire pressure yesterday hoping that was the cause. Also, the body shop did a courtesy installation so I am reluctant to go back and demand they fix it. It is very annoying and I don't mind paying, but I would rather do it myself - don't trust them too much.

you may want to have the alignment double-checked, especially since you were in an accident. I'm pretty sure the steering wheel can only go on centered.

Hi Midsized:

___The Wood-Grain as well as OEM steering wheel are connected to the shaft via a splined connection. There are approximately 36 - 40 (guesstimate at best) teeth. Pulling the steering wheel and turning it just one tooth over would change the angle of the wheel ~ 9 - 10 degrees. Hopefully this will fix your problem. If not, you may have some alignment issues that will need to be looked at. The Body man that did the work should be able to fix the problem very quickly if indeed it’s only a steering wheel alignment problem.

___Good Luck

A different steering wheel can easily have a different alignment pattern that could cause your problem . I think one solution for your problem would be to realign the steering column , you might consider that option also . I had my wood steering wheel installed by my local Honda service center , they thought it was identical to a Honda Pilot steering wheel and the install by them saved me $35.00 versus the Acura dealer installation . Good luck .
