After reading through the numerous posts on audio upgrades I thought that it would be good to group the upgrades into those that require little or no modification to the MDX. It seems that many of us are interested in buying some decent speakers, maybe an amp, and keeping the factory head unit. These upgrades should be simple enough to be done at home with a basic level of knowledge. I would also like to see the price be reasonable, say less than $1000.
I am currently thinking about the following:
Polk Audio GNX104 (129.99 at Crutchfield, also buy one get one free!)
Polk Audio EX3560 component speakers for front and back (229.99 at Crutchfield, buy one get 2nd half price)
I'm up to $475 before I get an amp and here are my questions.
1) The EX3560's come with 1" tweeters, I figure that I could replace the Bose tweeters in front with them but what about the one in the back?
2) Do you think that the speakers will fit well? Anyone try these yet?
3) What amp would work well with this setup?
4) Any other advice?
I know that there are also some Infinity and Boston Acoustics options out there for those that haven't read through the entire site yet.
Thanks,
Bnuke

I also have a 2003 Touring with nav and the BOZO audio. For a leased vehicle, I decided to limit my upgrade to the greatest bang for the buck under $1,000. (I'm not removing anything before it goes back.)
At lot of people commented on the big improvement just switching to Infinity 652's. I decided to go one better with the lastest version, the 6002i ($162.85 delivered for four from Sounddomain.com). Components are better but need crossovers, the power of an additional amp and rewiring. The Infinities drop in. I also got the Polk GNX sub ($82.50 delivered from MMXpress.com.) So far I've only spent about $260, including harness adapters. I'm waiting for the weather to improve before I install the speakers. I'd like to find a better "drop in" replacement amp to power the sub without rewiring. If I'm still not happy, it's not a major loss to toss the front speakers for something even better. |

I am a newbie to the MDX, so I am curious where the heck is the amp for the subwoofer? Also, did your Infinity replacements require an amp? Finally, did you do anything with the front tweets? Thanks

I believe the sub amp is in the back. Thus far I've only installed the front two Infinities. It took only about 20 minutes, thanks to the step by step photos posted in this forum by one of the members. The sound is much improved, even with the OEM tweeters still connected and no additional amp. I intend to complete the project when I get some free time.
In my opinion, the Infinities provide excellent sound quality for the money and ease of installation (drop-in). On the other hand, some of the members that replaced the OEM sub with the Polk indicated that it could use more power. Thus, I hope to get a small, drop-in replacement for it. |
