Hey there,

I was wondering what kind of engine coolant people have used, and what I should look for.

The manual says to use Honda brand, but I have not really seen it in the stores, and in the event I require some, what would be good to use?

thanks

It's not "in the stores," it's at the Honda or Acura dealer's. Buy it, use it, maintain your warranty.

Now have 30K miles and have 23 months on MDX. Is it time to change the coolant? Don't have manual handy, but is it really necessary to use Honda brand coolant to maintain warranty?

The seals in your water pump don’t care for mixed drinks other than the Honda type. Play it safe and avoid premature water pump issues by adhering to the manufacturer’s recommendations. :29:

Prestone® antifreeze/coolant is the #1-selling antifreeze/coolant in the US. Its patented Dual Action Formula provides superior quality protection for all automotive cooling systems. In addition to providing protection from -84°F to 276°F, Prestone antifreeze/coolant protects all cooling system metals from rust and corrosion, including the thin, lightweight aluminum found in many newer radiators.

No. From the owner's manual, "Always use Honda All Season Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2...If it is not available, you may use another major brand non-silicate coolant...Make sure it is a high-quality coolant recommended for aluminum engines."

Unlike the VTM-Fluid, which must be purchased from a Honda/Acura dealer, you may use another high-quality commercial coolant in your MDX. Honda All Season Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 just happens to come pre-mixed 50/50. I am confident Honda does not have the corner on the coolant market...but then again, using Honda coolant may give you that extra 20 hp gain you have been looking for in your MDX. Good luck.:29:

The shiny blue car required that the NEW water pump be replaced. This was due to different coolants in the system causing the new pump to fail. Rather than experience that again, I will pay the 18 bucks for the Honda Stuff.

You got ask yourself “Do ya feel lucky? Huh punk?” :13: :13:

I would stick to the Honda coolant, like the issue with the transmission fluid which also has to be Honda fluid. I used to own a Toyota and had to use the Toyota coolant which was red in color and much different than the traditional green fluid. I believe the auto manufacturers are using special additives for lubricating the water pump and any other internal components. Stick with Honda on this fluid.

come on! do you think Honda makes their own fluid? or do they just make up "Honda Coolant" bottles and run them on the same exact production line as another major brand??

I'm glad the major manufacturers can buy and analyze and reverse-engineer the wonders of the great Honda fluid for the rest of the world to then use . . .

Prestone is what I have used in all my vehicles as far back as I can remember.

When I purchase a gallon I immediately make a 50/50 solution with the left over jug from a previous Prestone purchase. Then when I pour it into the vehicle I know I have the correct mixture.
