Which dealer in the area are you working with? I'm using Hall Acura in Newport News and they will do my pinstriping (with Acura logo) for $25. |

| We're with Riddle in Chesapeake. I guess I'll have to call them and find out. I don't want it done before I get a chance to see the car when it comes in. Also I want it done in a certain place...I've seen one that was done right under the window...I want mine between the window and door handles so it's visable and doesn't blend in with the window. Thanks again! |

| Just ask the dealerships - they work with pinstripers all the time. If you don't like their answer, call any brand dealership in your area for referrals. |

If you have a steady hand, it's fairly easy to do it yourself. ProStripe MultiLine tape is available at Pep Boys and many other auto stores in various colors for $5.99 a roll. It has a dual line with a clear carrier tape to keep the lines parallel. It's easy to peel off if you mess up, and 1 roll will do your car with allowances for some redos. I used short strips of masking tape to make a dotted line 1-1/2" below the window line and put the tape just below it, and did 1 door or fender at a time. I just touched the tape down to the car 1st to make sure it was where I wanted it, then I smoothed it down tight and removed the clear carrier strip. At the ends, I left the tape just touched down, then I removed the carrier strip and curved the two ends into each other and trimmed with an Xacto knife. It only took me about 1/2 hour to do the whole car and it looks great. There are some good pix of pinstriping in the gallery. I copied one of these, but I haven't gotten a good picture of mine yet. I figured for $5-10, I can't go wrong - you can always just peel it off if you don't like it. Just be careful with the Xacto knife and cut gently as not to scratch the paint. :D

Any suggestions........
What color stripes would you put on a mahogany pearl with the gray fender flares? Without the flares I'm sure a saddle color stripe or stripes would look fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If the weather cooperates we will pin-stripe this afternoon. We are using the guy the dealer uses. We met him Monday afternoon at the dealership, so we got to talk with him about colors before he comes out. Here is what we discussed:
First he recommends three stripes; two medium width and one narrow. He says the size of the MDX suggests three rather than two. Dealer had samples of both two and three stripped cars on the lot. I must say that a White TL-S with the three stripes looked great. We will do the three.
Second we talked about colors. His first thought was to do the top two medium stripes to match the Saddle interior (same colors as the two-tone saddle) and the thin third stripe a light/med grey. However I pointed out that with our front two windows tinted you really couldn't see the interior very well from the exterior and there was no other exterior colors to compliment the Saddle. I asked about the possibility of doing it in all blacks/greys/silver.
He said not to go with black, the Mahogany is too dark. He said a three stripe combo of darkish grey/med grey/light grey (or silver) would be OK. He also said that light grey paint had a longer life than silver. He then went back to his first choice of matching the interior. Although not very noticeable from the outside he pointed out that every time the door was opened, particulary for passengers, the saddle match stripes would compliment the Saddle interior.
Sensing I was skeptical of the beige/saddle exterior he said the grey blends would look good. I will finish with the fact that on the way home we were stopped at a light with a Toyota Sienna of similar color to the Mahogany. All exterior cladding on the Seinna was black/grey. It had all grey pin-stripes that looked good.
He recommends (we don't have flares) matching the interior as his first choice, but agreed that matching the exterior would look good. |

Thank you very much for your reply. Both combinations sound great! My dealer only uses the tape type stripes. I would prefer real paint. Where is your dealer located?
Thanks again!

The guy the dealer uses does not work for the dealer but is an independant contractor. He works out of his truck, much like the windshield repair guys do. He is meeting us at our house, and will paint it in our driveway.
Call around to some auto detailing shops and/or call several dealerships and ask who they use. Good Luck. |

| This is the way to go in my opinion! He came out to the house, and it did not take very long at all. Cleaned/prepared the surface, mixed the paint, and applied in about 45 minutes total. Dries very fast as well. I recommend that anyone wanting professionally painted pin-stripes to call around various dealerships and ask who they use and/or recommend. |

MSU,
Did your "pinner" mention anything on durability? Does the painted one "stay on" better? I would think the paint option would be easier to "repair", as opposed to a plastic type decal. I've not owned a vehicle with the stripping, but am consdiering it for our MB when we get it.
Thanks for any light on this subject. |

... this is the first time we have done aftermarket pin-stripping. The guy did tell us that the vast majority of so-called dealer pin-stripping is done by guys like him. He said very few manufacturers paint pinstripes on at the factory.
As far as longevity goes he said it should not be a problem. May want some salt, what else would he say? Although he did warn against metallic paint. He said light grey would outlast silver for example. |
