This is a photo guide for the installation of the Infinity 6002I (652I replacement) speakers in front and rear doors of a 2003 MDX.
Parts List:
Infinity 6002I (6.5" speakers, $69.99/pair, purchased at Etronics.com, total cost for 2 pairs $151.87 ($12 shipping/insurance)).
Metra Turbowire Wire Harness ("converts" factory modular speaker plug to standard pronged speaker connectors, $5.99/pair, purchased at Best Buys (buy at install shop; not inside store), total cost for 2 pairs $11.98 plus tax).
Tools Needed:
Philips head screwdriver, standard screwdriver, drill, drill bit (3/32").
Sound Impression:
Highs are clear and strong - I had to turn down the treble from a +3 to a +1 to adjust for the new speakers.
Boominess seemed non-existent - Made me think I'll need to upgrade the subwoofer.
Overall:
Easy install (i.e. no additional parts needed other than noted above, just needed to drill one small hole to mount the bottom of the front speaker at the bottom), with dramatic improvement in sound. |

Note: I mounted the speaker using the existing top hole, but needed to drill a small hole at the bottom to secure the bottom of the speaker. THIS PICTURES DOES NOT SHOW THE HOLE DRILLED YET. The factory speakers have 3 holes, the Infinity's have 4. Therefore, I only used the top and bottom holes to mount the Infinity. I also used the factory screws to secure the Infinity speaker. |

Rear Speaker Water Cover and Infinity Adapter Ring
Note: You'll need to push out 3 plastic prongs on the water cover in order to fully seat the ring onto the cover. There are 2 positions for the ring where the holes will match the holes in the cover, only one position will allow for the proper positioning of the Infinity speaker so that the speaker connections fit though the opening in the cover. Also, the speaker prongs must be bent to a 90-degree angle to accomodate fit. |

Hi Markable:
___I was watching your post and pics go up and waited until the last pic was up before a reply …
___Thank you for the great pics and install instructions. It gives us novices something to look forward to in the near future.
___A few questions … How does it sound vs. the BOZO OEM that Acura afforded to us and are you going to do something with the rear sub? Also, are you leaving the tweeters and twiddler in the upper doors and rear connected? If you do something with the sub, please post a similar pic review if you can spare the time. An audio upgrade is all I really have to finish now.

Highs are strong and clear, and "boominess" is gone. Big overall improvement, but the need for a better subwoofer more present. I'll only do the subwoofer upgrade if a free-air subwoofer can be found, and which can be hooked up to a new amp that can be easily swapped with the existing amp. I'm leaving the tweeters in the upper doors because I couldn't really hear them when I shielded & unshielded them with my hand (although seemed to be noise generators). Don't know if I'll do anything about the roof twiddler yet. |

Markable,
Great instructions and photos on Infinity install. Do you know what the difference is between the 652i and 6002i versions? And I thought you had to cut part of the white plastic rain cover to install the rear speakers...this is from earlier posts on the rear install of the Infinities by other MDX'rs. I wonder if the 6002i's are made differently than the 652i's or the white plastic rain cover was changed in the '03 MDXs. |

I greatly appreciate your photo's and instructions. The Infinities are sitting here for a few weeks now, scared of the hours it may take me to install them. Your photo's show that it's a piece of cake.
The replacement open air subwoofer most of us are getting is the Polk GNX10DVC. (That's also sitting here.) It's fairly inexpensive, $82.50 delivered. I've been looking for a small drop-in replacement amp for the sub. I found a sub amp that is both powerful and described as "small". I wonder if this can be "dropped in" as a quick and easy replacement to the OEM. The price seems good too.

I don't know what the difference is between the 652i and 6002i, only that I've read here that they're a newer version.
I didn't need to cut the rain cover to install the rear speakers. The orientation of the adapter ring (provided with the Infinitys) with the rain cover was key (please review my install procedure in this thread) to aligning the speaker connections in the area of the existing cut-out in the rain cover. Still a tight squeeze, which necessitated bending the speaker connections (i.e. prongs) 90-degrees for a better fit.
Btw, I'm glad you found this thread helpful. Just wanting to contribute like so many others have.... |

| If you look at the specs, the new 6002i's have a slightly wider frequency response than the 652's and are slightly deeper. I had no trouble installing the fronts in less than 30 minutes. You don't even need to drill a hole if you use a power screwdriver with the Infinity screws. I'll wait for the weekend for the rears. The Infinity's do have a deeper bass than the OEM. However, this makes the short comings of the stock sub more pronounced. |

Markable,
Great post. After reading your post, I picked up 2 pairs of the 652i's during the week at the Circut City Sale mentioned elsewhere on this site and installed them this morning in about 30 minutes. Thanks for posting the info on where to get the wire harnesses... very useful. I got them at the install shop at Best Buy like you said with no problems. I like knowing I didn't have to alter the OEM stereo wiring at all and didn't do any cutting of the existing wiring.
I definitely hear a significant overall improvement from the 652is.

No more procrastination!
I read GACrabill's post on the Circuit City's sale of the 652i speakers, so I purchased a pair along with a wiring harness adapter last week.
Then using Markable's pics/instructions I replaced the front speakers with ease.
This is a wonderful site with so many helpful tips. Thanks to all.
Gosh the original Acura speakers are so cheap. I'm surprised they were in the "luxury" parts bin. |

The big Bose door speakers are full range. While there is no crossover, the tweeters have a little capacitor to roll off the base. Tis is similar to most coax aftermarket speakers. |

Great post, thanks for all the info. I think I've worked up the nerve to start by replacing the door speakers and later the sub.

What a great thread! Thanks!
I have a 2003 X Premium/Base model and the audio is the worst I have ever had in an Acura - and this is my 4th. My 2000TL with a stock Bose system was far superior IMO, and I am not a Bose fan at all.
I now have the insight into how easy it is to replace the stock speakers. Here are some questions:
- Does the Touring model have the same door speakers and sub (I know it has an upgraded head unit) as the Premium/Base? If not, are Touring owners also replacing their speakers?
- Am I correct in saying that there is no "drop-in" replacement for the crummy sub in the Premium/Base model?
- I read some negative posts about the Infinity's. Is there a speaker that is generally considered the "best" replacement?
Thanks again for a great thread! |

I've replaced the factory speakers in my 03 Base model with the 652i's in both the front and back. I've had them in now for about a month, so have a pretty good opinion on them.
1. Midrange is significantly improved.
2. Low Range boominess, as previously mentioned, is almost non-existant.
3. High range is adequate, however. a little too harsh on some songs.
I disconnected the tweeters up front.
This is all my opinion of course, as beauty is in the eye.....
In any event, a great upgrade for a hundred bucks or so.
Next audio upgrade: Xtant 301A + ID Sub. |

As I mentioned above, I did the easy install of the door speakers ... now I'm stuck ... I got the same 10" Polk subwoofer that has been recommended on a number of threads ... However, I've found that the mounting holes don't even come close to the factory holes ... what approach have others used to pull off this install?

| I am looking forward to a response to your question BrianR re: mounting holes. With the exception of the mounting holes, is the Polk a "drop-in" replacement regarding depth, impedance ect? |

You'll need to make an adapter ring for the sub. The adapter ring will screw into the existing mounts for the sub woofer and then you screw the new sub into the adapter ring. I am in the process of doing this now. I've done 2 already that do not work. What is that old adage...measure twice and cut once? I think I have it backwards.:D Hope this helps.
I know DaleB made one of these out of plexiglass. You might try a search to see if you can find that thread. |
|
|
| mdxer46 |
Hey, if we can get phins2rt or DaleB to make these adapters so we can buy 'em, then I'm in on replacing the sub. Otherwise, I'll have to wait until there is more of a streamlined way to replace that piece of crap sub.
Thanks for the info! |
|
|
| phins2rt |
| I guess I should have been more specific. DaleB had one made I believe. I am still trying to get it right but should have it tonight. It is relatively simple to make out of MDF and a jig saw or rot-zip saw. I'm glad I bought a big enough piece of MDF to have multiple attempts!:2: |

markable,
Thanks so much for your posting with pictures and installation tips. Before I had read your post, I had already installed the Infinity BassLink sub in my MDX. I chose the BassLink because of it's portablility. I am able to move/remove it as needed such as getting into the "headrest compartment" or raising the third seats. Very satisfied with this choice, because all I wanted was to add just a little more bass to the overall sound. I knew afterwards I was missing something else in my sound. I saw your post and I said, "great idea". Using your post as a guide, I had 4 6002I's installed in less than a half hour. The new sound really gave me goose bumps. I had new highs, more brilliance and a definite stereo separation.
Thanks again!!! :) |

Sounddomain.com. They promise to match any price on the net from an authorized dealer. They ended up knowingly matching a price from an "unauthorized" dealer - I forget who right now, but they had the Infinities for 59.00 a pair. Sounddomain matched the price and I bought 2 pair. Shipping was about $12.
The speakers were delivered a day early (today) and once I get a chance to install 'em, I'll report back. |

___Ok, this thing is going to turn into a group buy of sorts … I just spoke with Shyler over at Sounddomain.com and he said, “Sure, go ahead and post about the deal if you would like.”

Even if they will only match the $59.90 a pair because Discount Jungle is not an authorized Infiniti dealer, it sounds like a heck of a deal anyway!

I installed the Infinities and the upgrade is significant. As reported, the Alpine speakers are very cheap wide-range speakers. The Infinities are very crisp with excellent top end and punchy mid-bass. Unlike the other posters, I find these speakers to make up for the shortcomings of the crappy sub, at least in part, and they sort of compliment the sub. Overall, it sounds great. It's a low-cost, "must-do" upgrade for all MDXers.
The rear speakers are really a tight fit, so hang in there and fiddle with 'em and they'll drop in. Be sure to bend ALL tabs 90 degrees, not just the ones you are making a connection to.
Good luck to future installers and post questions if you have any. Don't forget to try Sounddomain.com for the discount.

In thinking about it, I believe most of these comments came out during the first year of MDX production. The '02 and '03 models all have a sound deadening (dynamat-like?) material throughout the body. I'm guessing this negates the need for dynamat. |

I do not think it negates the use of Dynamat and equivalent at the speaker mtg. surfaces, or even opposing surfaces of the outer door sheetmetal on the inside. The more the merrier.
The Acura material is to reduce road noise, not sympathetic vibrations from speaker drivers. |

Hey everyone, I just installed the 4 Infinity 6002i's using markable's great instructions! I purchased the speakers from SoundDomain.com, using xcel's instructions. I got the wiring harnesses at Best Buy, as recommended. Circuit City didn't have them.
The installation went pretty smooth. I could have installed the front speakers in my sleep. The back speakers were a very tight fit, but I got them in after a little effort.
My initial impression after first listening to them was, "Whoa, I now have treble!" I've now had to turn my treble setting down from +3 down to -2 or -3, depending on the song and the volume. There is defintely some bass being pumped out as well. (I'm not sure I'm imagining more bass because of the new Infinities, or because the OEM sub is now more noticeable because it's still a 2 ohm load while the Infinities are now 4 ohm loads for the OEM amp. Thoughts anyone?)
Anyway, my caveat is that so far all of my listening has been with my X parked in my quiet garage. (Maybe that can also explain why I'm hearing/imagining more bass?!) Oh well, at least in my garage, there is definitely a dramatic and noticable improvement! :29:
Thanks again, markable, for your great post! :4: |

Hi Markable:
___Thanks for the install tips … I just finished up. It took ~ an hour and a half from start to finish including disconnecting the X’s OEM Tweeter’s.
PS: If anyone else will be following the instructions, you don’t really need a drill. Just a sharp, small awl. It will punch through the plastic door panel like a knife through warm butter. And don’t forget to turn the 6002i’s tweeters up or just slightly off straight up w/ a slight angle toward the listener …

Xcel,
And what do you think of the results...? |
|
|
| xcel |
Hi Hardrock:
___They are not as efficient as the “Bozo” paper cones and garbage tweeters which means you will be one or two clicks up on the volume to match previous levels. Nothing to really discuss given how much more you have left before the “Bozo” amps give up the ghost but just an observation. The main item of note is that the Infinity’s have tighter bass. I was listening to Cheap Trick “At Budokan” and what a difference the Infinity’s make. I also listened to some George Winston “December” (piano solo’s) and the highs are much clearer if not a bit bright. I also had to drop the Treble to -2. Given how much sharper the entire range is with the Infinity’s, you will hear imperfections that you couldn’t hear in the car before. It’s the same imperfections you hear on a home based system with a particular CD as an example.
___Overall, everything is sharper (less muddy) with the Infinity’s. As for the “Bozo” Sub, it’s a POS in need of a replacement and I too am looking for a good swap out solution.
___Good Luck

Xcel,
Thanks for your observations! I'm really torn between spending a few dollars on the 6002i upgrage and spening the big bucks for the amps, components, etc. Truth be told, most days all I listen to is NPR, saving my eclectic choice in music for the weekends or roadtrips. However, when I do listen to music, I like it to sound good!

Hi Hardrock:
___I don’t want to sound to over enthusiastic as far as the 6002i’s are concerned. It’s a good cheap upgrade but it does not compare to a real set of components w/ crossovers that have been amped properly. The main item that the 6002i’s do when installed is place the “Bozo” sub setup in an even more desperate situation.
___Maybe this is a better way of depicting the Infinity 6002i improvement. Let’s say R. Stevens X w/ the Boston FX separates, crossovers, sub, and whatever amps he is using is rated at 90% + to perfection. The “Bozo” OEM system is probably something like 35 - 40%. The Infinity upgrade will get you to maybe 60%. It’s not an incredible “take it to a sound competition” improvement but it is definitely an improvement. I will let you know my final grade after I find an inexpensive sub worth swapping and using either the stock “Bozo” amp or an inexpensive but easy to install aftermarket w/ line level inputs (do them make these anymore?).
___I will have to try and provide better feedback after I spend some time behind the X’s wheel and a possible Sub upgrade but I do not get behind the wheel all that often :(

I also want to jump on the bandwagon and thank you for the very re-markable pics of the installation. I had done my fronts and was putting off the rear speaker install until I saw just how straightforward it was, from your post. Earlier posts had suggested I'd have to cut part of the rain guard, and you made it clear it could be done just by bending the tabs and finding the proper orientation of the adapter rings! Thanks for a great help and a real service to the other mdx'ers, myself included :) |

Here's my observation on the tweeters in the 6002's: When first installed, they were just awful- way too bright, they made cymbals sound like breaking glass. I opened the grilles back up and pointed the tweeters towards the floor, and disconnected the stock 2 inch tweeters, and still there was too much metallic brilliance in the top octave. I wound up reducing the treble to -6 or so for CD's, and -3 for radio.
However, after several hours of "breaking in", the metallic brilliance has been toned down quite a bit. I'm now at 0 treble for radio, and CD's don't seem so overly sibilant and annoyingly bright. The tonal balance is still not perfect, but it's much smoother than when new.
I'm familiar with the change in speakers from when they're new to when they have several hours on them. You'll see audiophiles talk about the break in period for their speakers. I've never seen so much change in a speaker, however, as in the Infinity 6002. They went from being annoying to being listenable.
And to the skeptics: no, it wasn't just that I grew accustomed to the brightness. Before I drive in the MDX, I've usually listened to a high-end stereo that provides a reference standard. |

What have people done to upgrade the Bose beyond an Infinity solution that is under $500 (including sub)?
What sounds good in an MDX?
It's been a while since I shopped and installed a total system. 1979 to be exact. :D |

So far upgraded the front door Infinitys with Boston's FX-6s. Definite improvement but not as dramatic as going from Bose to Infinity.
I have the Polk sub with a 150 Hz filter. 100Hz filters in the front speakers also. No amp changes, yet. |

I upgradeded to Infinity per Markable's remarkable post. I am in the process of putting in a Cerwin Vega 2 Ohm 10" sub in place of the crappy Bose so called sub. I am also using a low pass filter purchased from Parts express (great price, fleeced me on shipping!)
I got the MDF ring cut per DaleB's instructions. Now it is a matter of fine-tuning the install, and seeing if it works.
Tomorrow!
This forum is the very best I have seen in terms of knowlegde and the spirit of sharing. Keep it up guys.

Can some one post a part # or link at partsexpress.com as to which is the correct Low Pass Filter to use for door speakers and SUB?
Thanks!

Now I am more confused.
I plan to do 4- Infinity 6002i's and the Polk GNX10DVC as the replacement to the OEM Bose.
Do I use the Base Stopper versus the 100 Hz LOW PASS 4 OHM crossover?
Which do I use for which?
Thanks! |

Bass blockers for door speakers..they have limited value for rear doors...I mean do you really care that much if rear passengers are audiophiles? Don't think its worth the time and energy of taking them out again, or even adding them new.
Inline filter for the sub, limits frequencies to only those below 100 hz..... |

Will adding this to the stock sub do any good? I'm going to be changing all the door speakers with the 6002I soon. |

Zafer,
I believe the stock BOSE sub is 2 ohm (not 4 ohm). You will need to "install" a different type of low pass filter (consisting of a capacitor and an inductor). Check out this link. I've done this and it does filter out the highs! No more vocals in your sub.:D
The in line filter you mentioned would work for a 4 ohm sub. |

phins2rt,
I checked out your link to the other thread, but still don't see the low pass filter to add to a 2 ohm sub (Polk GNX10DVC). Can you please tell me a part # or link?
Thanks,
