Who's Smarter? by Cindy Osborne
The Hollywood group is at it again. Holding anti-war rallies, screaming about the Bush Administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming the President and his Cabinet every chance they get, to anyone and everyone who will listen. They publicly defile them and call them names like "stupid", "morons", and "idiots". Jessica Lange went so far as to tell a crowd in Spain that she hates President Bush and is embarrassed to be an American.
So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country? Let's look at the biographies of these "stupid", "ignorant", "moronic" leaders, and then at the celebrities who are castigating them:
President George W. Bush: Received a Bachelors Degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until 1986. He was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998 winning 68.6 percent of the vote. In 1998 Governor Bush won 49 percent of the Hispanic vote, 27 percent of the African-American vote, 27 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of women. He won more Texas counties, 240 of 254, than any modern Republican other than Richard Nixon in 1972 and is the first Republican gubernatorial candidate to win the heavily Hispanic and Democratic border counties of El Paso, Cameron and Hidalgo. (Someone began circulating a false story about his I.Q. being lower than any other President. If you believed it, you might want to go to URBANLEGENDS.COM and see the truth.)
Vice President Dick Cheney: Earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966, both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political Science Association congressional fellowship. One of Vice President Cheney's primary duties is to share with individuals, members of Congress and foreign leaders, President Bush's vision to strengthen our economy, secure our homeland and win the War on Terrorism. In his official role as President of the Senate, Vice President Cheney regularly goes to Capital Hill to meet with Senators and members of the House of Representatives to work on the Administration's legislative goals. In his travels as Vice President, he has seen first hand the great demands the war on terrorism is placing on the men and women of our military, and he is proud of the tremendous job they are doing for the United States of America.
Secretary of State Colin Powell: Educated in the New York City public schools, graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY and received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration Degree from George Washington University. Secretary Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations. Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and other institutions have been named in his honor and he holds honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the country. (Note: He retired as Four Star General in the United States Army)
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: Attended Princeton University on Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as a Naval aviator; Congressional Assistant to Rep. Robert Griffin (R-MI), 1957-59; U.S. Representative, Illinois, 1962-69; Assistant to the President, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, Director of the Cost of Living Council, 1969-74; U.S. Ambassador to NATO, 1973-74; head of Presidential Transition Team, 1974; Assistant to the President, Director of White House Office of Operations, White House Chief of Staff, 1974-77; Secretary of Defense, 1975-77.
Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge: Raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his Law Degree and was in private practice before becoming Assistant District Attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.
National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice: Earned her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. (Note: Rice enrolled at the University of Denver at the age of 15, graduating at 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science (Cum Laude). She earned a Master's Degree at the University of Notre Dame and a Doctorate from the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies. Both of her advanced degrees are also in Political Science.) She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Morehouse College in 1991, the University of Alabama in 1994, and the University of Notre Dame in 1995. At Stanford, she has been a member of the Center for International Security and Arms Control, a Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Studies, and a Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army (1984). She also has written numerous articles on Soviet and East European foreign and defense policy, and has addressed audiences in settings ranging from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Moscow to the Commonwealth Club to the 1992 and 2000 Republican National Conventions. From1989 through March 1991, the period of German reunification and the final days of the Soviet Union, she served in the Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior Director, of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1997, she served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender -- Integrated Training in the Military. She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. She was a Founding Board member of the Center for a New Generation, an educational support fund for schools in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, California and was Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula. In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition and KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco. Born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, she resides in Washington, D.C.
So who are these celebrities? What is their education? What is their experience in affairs of State or in National Security? While I will defend to the death their right to express their opinions, I think that if they are going to call into question the intelligence of our leaders, we should also have all the facts on their educations and background:
Barbra Streisand : Completed high school Career: Singing and acting
Cher: Dropped out of school in 9th grade. Career: Singing and acting

While comparing the education and experience of these two groups, we should also remember that President Bush and his cabinet are briefed daily, even hourly, on the War on Terror and threats to our security. They are privy to information gathered around the world concerning the Middle East, the threats to America, the intentions of terrorists and terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot believe that we are in any way as informed as our leaders.
These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country. They only have a deep seated hatred for all things Republican.
By nature, and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative views and anything that supports or uplifts the United States of America.
The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum, or when he attacked the Bosnian Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was heard from Hollywood.
Yet now, after our nation has been attacked on its own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed, by freedom-hating terrorists, while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against the war. Why the change? Because an honest, God-fearing Republican sits in the White House.
Another irony is that in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was in office, the Hollywood group aligned themselves with disarmament groups like SANE, FREEZE and PEACE ACTION, urging our own government to disarm and freeze the manufacturing of any further nuclear weapons, in order to promote world peace.
It is curious that now, even after we have heard all the evidence that Saddam Hussein has chemical, biological and is very close to obtaining nuclear weapons, their is no cry from this group for HIM to disarm. They believe we should leave him alone in his quest for these weapons of mass destruction, even though it is certain that these deadly weapons will eventually be used against us in our own cities.
So why the hype out of Hollywood? Could these celebrities believe that since they draw such astronomical salaries, they are entitled to also determine the course of our Nation? That they can make viable decisions concerning war and peace? Did Michael Moore have the backing of the Nation when he recently thanked France, on our behalf, for being a "good enough friend to tell us we were wrong"? I know for certain he was not speaking for me. Does Sean Penn fancy himself a Diplomat, in going to Iraq when we are just weeks away from war? Does he believe that his High School Diploma gives him the knowledge (and the right) to go to a country that is controlled by a maniacal dictator, and speak on behalf of the American people? Or is it the fact that he pulls in more money per year than the average American worker will see in a lifetime? Does his bank account give him clout?
The ultimate irony is that many of these celebrities have made a shambles of their own lives, with drug abuse, alcoholism, numerous marriages and divorces, scrapes with the law, publicized temper tantrums, etc. How dare they pretend to know what is best for an entire nation! What is even more bizarre is how many people in this country will listen and accept their views, simply because they liked them in a certain movie, or have fond memories of an old television sitcom!
It is time for us, as citizens of the United States, to educate ourselves about the world around us. If future generations are going to enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers bequeathed us, if they are ever to know peace in their own country and their world, to live without fear of terrorism striking in their own cities, we must assure that this nation remains strong. We must make certain that those who would destroy us are made aware of the severe consequences that will befall them.
Yes, it is a wonderful dream to sit down with dictators and terrorists and join hands, singing Cumbaya and talking of world peace. But it is not real. We did not stop Adolf Hitler from taking over the entire continent of Europe by simply talking to him. We sent our best and brightest, with the strength and determination that this Country is known for, and defeated the Nazi regime. President John F. Kennedy did not stop the Soviet ships from unloading their nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 with mere words. He stopped them with action, and threat of immediate war if the ships did not turn around. We did not end the Cold War with conferences. It ended with the strong belief of President Ronald Reagan... PEACE through STRENGTH. |

| If we can consider limiting someone's free speech by placing limits on their campaign contributions, cashing in on their wealth to influence politics, why can't we similarly limit cashing in on celebrity? Celebrity is even more insidious than wealth, since at least wealth decreases as it's used. |

MSU,
First, let me state that I fully support the troops.
Second, let me ask, who is Cindy Osbourne and by what publication is she employed or retained? Certainly the article has much information but it's obviously written with an agenda as well (and with some political bias). Of course, the information is interesting and I am glad you presented it.
Third, I agree that actors, etc. should not have great influence over our political beliefs b/c they are not necessarily "in the know" or all that smart. That being said, they have a right to express their views just like anyone else. To limit their right to free speech undermines one of the priciples that makes this country so great. Bottom line, what we need are people to think independently and not be overly influenced by what any political party, actor, etc. has to say.
Finally, I think most eveyone agrees that we should support our troops and be thankful for their efforts. To do otherwise is to underestimate the sacrifices they are making. |

I got this today in an email:quote: I know not everyone supports the decision to target Iraq and many people have made the news lately protesting the war with Saddam. However, lets not forget the thousands of men and women who don't have that right to protest, but have a duty to defend that right; those people who have chosen to serve in our armed forces.
This is easy enough, timely and certainly seems appropriate.
To All, Please visit the Department of Defense web page below and sign in thanking the men and women of the U.S. military services for defending our freedom.
The compiled list of names will be sent out to our soldiers at the
end of the month. So far, there are only about 4,171,825 names from a national population of over 250 million. What a shame.
National Military Appreciation Month.
The entire exercise takes 10 seconds...literally.
Please pass it on to your e-mail friends.
When I visited the site the number of signatures was over 9 million. Let's go for more! |

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek; I didn't really mean that they (actors, celebrities) shouldn't be able to say the things they're saying. But, WE SHOULDN'T LISTEN. Shame on people that do, and shame on newscasters that parade it as news. |

Hi All:
___God Bless the American Men and Woman of the Armed Forces currently placing their lives in harms way for our future and that includes President George W. Bush and his cabinet. Not that I am siding with President Bush on some of his other policies but in regard to removing the world of a renown mass murder of his own citizens, they are doing the right thing to rid the world of a such a disgrace.
___My heart goes out to the fallen heroes of “Iraqi Freedom” and God Speed to those still fighting for us in the hostile environment known as Iraq.
___Good Luck to all of you currently serving in the American, British, and Australian Armed forces who are fighting side by side for a just cause … I wish all of you the best of luck!

Good point. I agree. And maybe we listen to their ideas and reasons but do not simply adopt them without independent thought just because they are famous. |

To Some of you am "FIREBLADE6" to others am just a schmuck owning an MDX pontificating on this web-site...But I do want to make my outlook in the IRAQI war VERY LOUD and VERY CLEAR!
Am a 37 year old Vietnamese male from South Vietnam. I arrived here in the summer of 1974 from the 10,000 days civil war between the North Vietnamese and South Vietnamese. All I can say is that if the Americans were not there to do the job that they do, I would not have not been here to continue with the opportunities and the life that I have today. Yes the Vietnam war is difficult. What the American arm forces learned then they will not repeat nor will they make that mistake again! It is DIFFICULT to fight an enemy when you cannot differentiate them apart.
So to date with us fighting the Fedayameen Saadam, they are using the SAME tactics as the Vietnames guerillas did. But this time, it will not work we WILL PREVAIL! Yes there will be civilian deaths involve but this is the cost to take out an elitist like Saadam Hussein. This is not a MOVIE, this is not a war game play out...This is WAR this is reality...if you actors, wannabe peace activists, proclaimmed politicians thinking that this war is wrong..then you need to undeclare yourselves as Americans and turn in your Social Security Number to SSA and move out of this country and NEVER turn back.
I believe in this country. My blood runs red white and blue...I cry for the men and women that put their lives in endanger and leave their love ones behind to fight a war that will in the future stop terrorists from continuing to put fear in my family and every other families in this country and the country of IRAQ, ISREAL, IRAN and any country that have experienced terrorism. I pay my taxes and I abide by the laws and regulations and beliefs of this country...Am willing to bear arms and go to war for my country if the government is willing to take me...and I will kill any terrorists that I see trespassing in my American property...
So for any of you who think this war is wrong??? F*** YOU! |

Kind of ironic, our troops risk their lives to preserve the right of people to speak their minds and protest.
While I fully support our troops and our administration, I would say that to refer to our fellow Americans who do not feel the same way as "unamerican" is in itself, unamerican. Even though I do not agree with their views, seems to me that the protesters have just as much right to express themselves as the rest of us. |

Agreed. As long as these 'protests' don't infringe on other American rights. The radio talk shows in SF are buzzing for the last few days on this 'protesting' pro/con. Ironically, these people who see fit to block streets arbirarilly don't take into consideration the consequenses of their actions. Incidents of people needing medical care and other emergencies were held hostage in their car or bus while these 'protesters' deemed it nessesary to 'voice their opinion'. Many of the people who suffered actually agreed with the 'protesters'! If find this behavior irresponsible and un-American. |

From: Alabama State Auditor Beth Chapman.
Attached is a copy of Mrs. Chapman's speech, which resulted in five standing ovations, tremendous applause and an encore. It's a short read and well worth it.
Stand Up for America Rally Speech
By: Beth Chapman
I'm here tonight because men and women of the United States military have given their lives for my freedom. I am not here tonight because Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me. If my memory serves me correctly, it was not movie stars or musicians, but the United States Military who fought on the shores of Iwo Jima, the jungles of Vietnam, and the beaches of Normandy. Tonight, I say we should support the President of the United States and the U.S. Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippy, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and music and whine somewhere else. After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be put to death at the hands of Sadam Husssein or Osama Bin Laden. I want to know how the very people who are against war because of the loss of life, can possibly be the same people who are for abortion? They are the same people who are for animal rights but against the rights of the unborn.
The movie stars say they want to go to Iraq and serve as "human shields" for the Iraqis. I say let them buy a one-way ticket and go. No one likes war. I hate war! But the one thing I hate more is the fact that this country has been forced into war-innocent people have lost their lives -- and there but for the grace of God, it could have been my brother, my husband, or even worse my own son.
On December 7, 1941, there are no records of movie stars treading the blazing waters of Pearl Harbor.
On September 11, 2001; there are no photos of movie stars standing as "human shields" against the debris and falling bodies ascending from the World Trade Center. There were only policemen and firemen -- underpaid civil servants who gave their all with nothing expected in return. When the USS Cole was bombed, there were no movie stars guarding the ship -- where were the human shields then? If America's movie stars want to be human shields, let them shield the gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles, or New York City, let them shield the lives of the children of North Birmingham whose mothers lay them down to sleep on the floor each night to shelter them from stray bullets. If they want to be human shields, I say let them shield the men and women of honesty and integrity that epitomizes courage and embody the spirit of freedom by wearing the proud uniforms of the United States Military. Those are the people who have earned and deserve shielding!
Throughout the course of history, this country has remained free, not because of movie stars and liberal activists, but because of brave men and women who hated war too. However, they lay down their lives so that we all may live in freedom. After all - "What greater love hath no man, that he lay down his life for his friend," or in this case a country. We should give our military honor and acknowledgement and not let their lives be in vain. If you want to see true human shields, walk through Arlington Cemetery. There lie human shields, heroes, and the BRAVE Americans who didn't get on television and talk about being a human shield - they were human shields.
I thank God tonight for freedom - - those who bought and paid for it with their lives in the past - - those who will protect it in the present and defend it in the future. America has remained silent too long! God-fearing people have remained silent too long! We must lift our voices united in a humble prayer to God for guidance and the strength and courage to sustain us throughout whatever the future may hold. After the tragic events of Sept. 11th, my then eleven -year-old son said terrorism is a war against them and us and if you're not one of us, then you're one of them.
So in closing tonight, let us be of one accord, let us stand proud, and let us be the human shields of prayer, encouragement and support for the President, our troops and their families and our country. May God bless America, the land of the free, the home of the brave and the greatest country on the face of this earth! |

quote: Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippy, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and music and whine somewhere else. After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be put to death at the hands of Sadam Husssein or Osama Bin Laden.
Neither Sadam Hussein or Osama Bin Laden mind if anyone criticizes the US Government. :12:
Ironically, Beth Chapman does. I didn’t know that the right to “free speech” was removed from the US Constitution. It's sad that a government official has such contempt for others with views that differ from hers. The actors have the right to speak, but no one is forced to listen or agree with them. To me, their opinions are worth no more than someone on the street.
quote: I am not here tonight because Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me.
If it weren't for those Beth Chapman named, she wouldn't have had anything to say. :D |

F*** YOU!

I'm conviced beyond a shadow of a doubt, that these SELFISH HYPOCRITES (aka anti-war protestors) - INCLUDING THE CELEBRITIES - are in it for their own cheap publicity, and to "make a statement" They could care less for the Iraqi people or the overall good of the world

You really need to overcome your bashfulness and just say what you think, and stop sitting on the fence regarding your support for the war effort. ;)

Yes, I understand that the US advance has been slowed because the troopes are slipping on all the rose petals thrown at them by the Iraqi people.
Saddam Hussein is the enemy, not France, Russia or Germany. I didn't know that the US was at war with those three countries. |

[QUOTE]Well, that's one way to remain ignorant.
You think too highly of your own opinions. I have read them in several other forums. (Mostly on Iraq). From what I have read, you seem to "get off" by knocking any opinion with which you don't agree. You go to great lengths to quote historical data while trying to belittle the poster you have the disagreement with. You also must make it a point to tell them why they are "wrong" and why their thinnking is flawed. You seem to always be looking for a disagreement.
I, for one, am tired of your ramblings. If, in your opinion, I will remain ignorant by putting you on my ignore list, then so be it. |

Aren't you knocking an opinion with which you don't agree, and getting satisfaction by telling me that you will use the "ignore button"? That's cool, you can give up and surrender to me; for some ignorance is bliss. By the way, are you French?
quote: You also must make it a point to tell them why they are "wrong" and why their thinnking is flawed.
It's rather difficult to engage in a debate - as opposed to engaging in a cheerleading session - without doing that. Unfortunately, most of the pro-war statements here are based more on emotion rather than on reason.
Why all this blood lust for Saddam coming out of the USA? Admittedly, Saddam's one very bad dude who ought to be disarmed. But when has he ever attacked the USA? Is it justified to attack a country only because you fear that it might attack at some time in the future?
By the way, Saddam was once given the keys to Detroit. What made him turn against the US (his ally) in the first place? Saddam was alway a very bad guy and the US was still his ally for years. Could it be that he felt betrayed by the US because it was double-dealing materiel to Iran? Yes, I think that's what happened. |

Ocean,
You've probably noticed that I've been rather quiet lately. You hit it on the head: when presented with rational thought supported with historical references and irrefutable truths, the cheerleaders revert to outright revolt based on emotion, leading to denial (i.e., "I'll ignore you now").
Let's face it: there's no way our points of view will gain much acceptance here. Perhaps, in a couple of years, after the dust has settled (literally and figuratively), and reaction and emotionalism have given way to ponderance and rationalism, we will be able to look back and perform some more decent analysis. Who knows -- we might even be able to persuade a few, just as it happened after Vietnam...... |

That's very oracular, and I couldn't agree more. Perhaps it's somewhat easier for us to be rational because we're not as involved in or affected by the issue. It's like they can't see clearly because there's too much fire in their eyes. It's like living next door to an angry Godzilla - very hard to reason with. He can only kill or ignore you - I guess I should consider myself lucky.
By the way Pierre, I won't miss being "ignored" by someone whose only contribution to this board is at the "word association" thread.

Well, wait a sec here. Troops in the Armed Forces are defending our freedom? Huh? I understand WW2, Korea, and even Vietnam, but the conflict in Iraq? How is Saddam posing a threat to your freedom?
Please don't tell me cuz he collaborates with terrorists that can one day come to the USA and detonate a chemical or nuclear bomb. If this were true...why are the Armed Forces not engaged in countless other nations where terrorist harboring has historically been proven or seen rampant recently? Many places in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Plus, as a person that believes in the fair laws and ideas of this country such as YOU ARE INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY and not the other way around...I would like to see irrefutable evidence of dangerous terrorist collaborative activities, which we have seen none.
Lastly, I know it's a good feeling to think of the brave men and women on the Armed Forces as ones who can liberate an opressed people and what not, but come on, let's open our eyes a bit here. You really think that is the *REAL* #1, #2, #3, or #4 reason for engaging Saddam's regime? I don't. Reason? Nevermind all the years between the end of the Vietnam war and now, just THIS YEAR alone, there are more nations in our world with badly oppressed people than I can bother counting that receive NO assistance from the more priveliged countries. Why? We all know the reason, I won't say more.
Nonetheless, for the sake of everyone, given the unprecedented international attention this Iraq situation has gained now, I sure as hell hope that the Iraqi people are better off sooner than later, becase the world is watching...and if things turn sour, the United States' humble, moral, and respectable reputation can quickly turn in to shambles quickly. This is mostly terrible because the asshole terrorists of the world will become more powerful and influential and even "justifiable" in the eyes of many in 3rd world countries.
Peace. |

I agree completely. There is no need to disrupt others just yourself arrested and make a point. Many of those being held up in traffic might just agree with them, but have a job they need to go to. While I feel that we should have exhausted all diplomatic avenues being going to war, I DO FULLY SUPPORT OUR TROOPS. And now that we've started it, let's finish it. I just wish Bush would get quit giving impromtu speeches. He might be smart as hell be sounds like a twit when he isn't reading a prepared speech. Just my 2 cents. |

The war has so much impetus there is no way demonstrators will have much of an effect. They should be rallying to support the allied forces since they are in the thick of it, and also humanitarian aid to civilian Iraqis.
The constant ranting of many protestors is in the same category of the statements of defiance of the Iraqi government IMHO.
Reminds me of the Monty Python movie where the armored Knights are fighting, and one ends up on the ground all hacked up. He is still screaming as the victor rides off; "Come back you coward, and fight!" |

London
British troops should not be sent to fight in Iraq unless a system is in place to prevent accidental attacks by American aircraft, says a senior officer whose unit was bombed in a friendly fire incident during the 1991 Gulf War.
Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Larpent has accused the Ministry of Defence of serious negligence in failing to introduce a system to prevent such accidents.
Colonel Larpent commanded 3rd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers during the Gulf War. Nine of his men were killed and 12 seriously wounded when a US A10 Tankbuster aircraft mistook them for Iraqi troops.
The colonel's attack came as the British Government prepares to announce the mobilisation of 7000 reservists and the deployment of troops to take part in any American-led war on Iraq, amid reports that British special forces have already been in action with US forces in Iraq. He argues that defence chiefs should make the fitting of an effective Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system to front-line army vehicles "a precondition of the commitment of British troops to close combat operations involving the US Air Force".
"There has been plenty of time over the past 12 years for a solution to this problem to be found. The (Ministry of Defence) answer that 'we are working on it', is unacceptable," he said in a letter to The Daily Telegram.
He says some of the men who served under him in the Gulf War are now due to be deployed as part of 1 (UK) Armoured Division to fight alongside US forces.
"That the same soldiers are now preparing to undertake operations in the same theatre with nothing more to protect them from their allies than the same fluorescent marker panels we carried on top of our vehicles smacks of serious negligence on the part of the MOD," he says. |

Hi Scoobs:
___I feel for the British armed forces member that lost his life in his Warrior by the A10 driver. I only wish this sad incident would not have happened and my heart goes out to that soldiers family.
___From my understanding, there are a number of other methods besides sight to tell a coalition vehicle from a combatant. Apparently, either the A10’s equipment was faulty or the driver was not paying attention to what he was doing by any stretch of the imagination. I am so sorry that this incident happened :(
___In either case, this is a Warrior from ~ 3000 ft. unfortunately :(
___Good Luck

For those of you boycotting French wine and the like, here's an exerpt from a supposed Mr. Moore directed to Mr. Bush that I found:
"...But have you forgotten we wouldn't even have this country known as America if it weren't for the French? That it was their help in the Revolutionary War that won it for us? That our greatest thinkers and founding fathers -- Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, etc. -- spent many years in Paris where they refined the concepts that lead to our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution? That it was France who gave us our Statue of Liberty, a Frenchman who built the Chevrolet, and
a pair of French brothers who invented the movies? And now they are doing what only a good friend can do -- tell you the truth about yourself, straight, no b.s. Quit pissing on the French and thank them for getting it right for once. You know, you really should have traveled more (like once) before you took over. Your ignorance of the world has not only made you look stupid, it has painted you into a corner you can't get out of. " |
