| Has anyone tried to install a video entertainment system in the MDX? My kids would really like to be able to view videotapes and DVDs during family trips. (P.S. new user ... don't even have my MDX yet) |

| We travel alot and could use some entertainment for the kids...however the sales guy mentioned to my hubby about how someone got 2 tv's installed in the back of the headrests of their front seats..hmmmmm don't know if I want the tvs in there permantely. |

Not to confuse this with converting the NAV screen.
While killing some time in Houston (I live in Mich.) I stopped into the dealership on the SW side of Houston. Forgot the name. The sales rep was friendly considering he had almost no shot at a sale- spent 20 minutes with him looking at the MDX.
He said they could install a video system for $2000. Too expensive for me (although that's what the NAV costs!) I wonder if this is the same as what the Infiniti guys can put in the QX4?
What's up with the Japanese naming this high end SUV's with numbers/letters anyway?
Take care |

| I have seen Acura dealers installed a flip open LCD TV screen right behind the sun roof opening and a DVD player installed in the cargo area. It looks good, but a lot of $$. |
|
|
|
| That's exactly what we were looking for! Thanks again...I'm just scared to find out how much it's gonna cost! |
|
|
|
That's the one the salesmen told me about- $2000. Curious if you find it cheaper.
Good luck (for all of us!) |
|
|
|
Was that $2000 including the screen and dvd and install? Or was that just the price of the install? If so where do you go to get the screen and dvd?
Thanks! |
|

I paid about $1,700 (installed) for DVD player (plays DVDs, CDs, Video CDs, MP3s), 6.4" flip down, FM modulator (to listen through stereo) and 2 wireless headphones. When you break it down, it's about $1200 for the materials and $500 for the labor. But worth it!! The DVD player fits under the front seat!!
I just spoke to TIm @ HondaAcuraworld, and he is pretty sure the Touring screen and the Base model screen is the same (e.g. it actually is color instead of just indiglo blue for us base model owners). The reason why I mention this is that there is a way to play DVDs on the dash screen (see other posts on this board)! |
|
|
|
| Thanks for that info..that's exactly what we wanted..not a bad price for all that and I totally forgot about the headphones...no way I want to hear cartoons for an 8 hour trip! Now all I have to do is talk hubby into it. He's already freaking out cause I want to get the driver and passenger and moonroof tinted and have pinstriping done..like that's gonna cost no more then $100! Thanks again! |
|
|
|
| Actually, I would rather opt for the DVD then the Navi. The DVD will truely make it a luxo crusier. |
|
|
|
| A couple of years ago I bought an ACDC 9" tv/vcr combination. It looks terrible, but I only put it in the car for long trips...my husband won't let the kids use it when he's in the car...he wants the only noise to be the CD he is listening to. Hey...it's cheap and it works. |
|
|
|
| At first I was thinking of that, but where we could put it it would be directly in front of the rear air vents. Thanks |

Ordered 2 5.6" Video monitor kits for the MDX. These are really cool, they come with a vinyl case and slip over the headrest. I have two young boys, 3 and 6. The 6yr old loves to play nintendo and the 3yr old likes his tapes. They now can both do their own thing on long trips or they can play nintendo or watch tapes together. Cost of everything came to about $675.00. The break down was:
2 monitor kits @ $289.00 each plus S&H.
1 AC/DC 300 watt power convertor (Nintendo and VCR) $40.00.
2 head phones @ $20.00.
The best thing is that it is totally portable and there's no drilling of additional holes in my MDX. Going to Mammoth (6 hour drive) with the family, should be a good test.
The web site for the monitor kits (model B-054) is

hcmdx,
Those monitors and video or game traveler kits look pretty nice. Let us know how well they work after you've tried them. I'm sure my 2 and 4 year olds would like something more than each other to keep them occupied during long trips. It looks like the harness wraps all the way around the headrests. Does that make it uncomfortable to lean your head back? I have a leased MDX so this might be a better solution than an installed one so I can easily return my 2001 MDX for a 2005 model! |

The strap is 3/4" vinyl and is barely noticeable, a more than fair trade off for keeping the kiddies occupied. The best thing here as I previously stated is that the system is completely portable, so when your lease is up you can move this system to your next vehicle. I like the portability because I do not want my children watching tapes or playing nintendo everytime they get in the car. They get enough of that at home. It is strictly for long road trips only and comes out after the trip is over. The problem that I have noticed with center mounted screens (overhead pods) is that unless you are situated right in front of the screen the quality of the output is not very good. |

Just got back from Mammoth. The video monitors worked great. Had them set up so that the boys could toggle back and forth between the VCR and nintendo game independently. Caravaned up with two other cars, and the kids in the cars were fighting over who would ride with us. On a side note, it started to snow when we got there and turned into a full blown snow storm. Many cars were pulling over to put on chains. I just kept plugging along and the MDX handled flawlessly without chains. |

I am highly interested in the video system you purchased, but I am confused and the video web site where you purchased doesn't help clear up my confusion. I have only been an eyewitness to factory installed overhead video monitors with the VCR either in the trunk or under the front seat with no visible wiring. Most of these came with wireless headphones.
I see from the web sight where you purchased your system photos of the monitors on the headrests. Where is the actual VCR/GAME module located?
Are their lots of wires and gadgets hanging out from monitors to VCR?
And can you get wireless headphones?
I need you to answer something along the lines of:
"Vehicle Video components explained to Idiots and Dummies"
Thanks in advance,
Mary

You can go a couple of ways. The site that I referenced sells a back pack type system that has a monitor and a VCR that straps onto the seat in front of the child. All the wires are in this pack, the only thing that would hand out is the wire that plugs into your cigaratte lighter. I think it goes for about $500 and includes a 5.6" monitor and a VCR and all the wire hookups. The part is #A-053. This is probably the simplest way to go. I myself decided to have a screen for each of my two boys and bought 2 of the 5.6" monitor kits. These kits contain all the wires and cables you need to hook up a VCR. If you want to hook up nintendo 64 you need to buy some adapter plugs (about $3.00 at Radio Shack). I placed my VCR and and Nintendo game on the floor in the middle right underneath the AC controls. Note if you plan on using your own VCR as well as Nintendo they need to have the AC/DC type power plug that plugs into a cigarette lighter hole. I just used the cheap headphones with the wires, about $5.00 each. A third alternative would be to buy the Back pack system and one additional Monitor kit and hook the additional monitor into the back pack system. I am not too sure about the wireless headphones. If I did not answer all your questions, the company does a pretty good job of getting back to you if you were to send them an Email with questions. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask me as well. |

| I have been researching the same topic since we are doing a road trip from New Orleans to Montana this summer and it would be great entertainment for the kids.It seems like most of the stores inour area and the websites I have found all sell products from Steelhorse. They have systems that suspend from the headrests on the front seats, mount on the ceiling with a flip down screen,or replace the existing center console.I will probably go with the portable model since we can use it for VCR's in the cabin. Also I was a bit concerned about safety with the head rest mounts. In the case of an accident it looks like it would be a pretty unforgiving surface for someones face to bounce off of.The one downside to the unit that suspends between the seats is that it will block the rear air vents. |

I know that this has been covered before, but an ultralight to middleweight laptop computer fits perfectly on the center armrest tray when flipped back for the second row cupholders. Just use a strap to secure the laptop to the armrest/tray and you have a perfect platform to play DVDs and video games. Believe me, I investigated all options before our round trip from Boston to Atlanta (the first 2500 miles put on our MDX!) with two boys (9yrs and 7yrs).
I have found that hockey sock garters are the perfect thing to strap the laptop down (part stretchy fabric, part velcro), and Targus has a universal DC adapter that plugs right into the center console power outlet (everything neat and hidden away). You can use an FM rebroadcaster or cassette adapter to route the audio through the MDX's stereo.
Enjoy your trip. |

Roof mounted unit now with installation pictures!
Has anyone installed this Audiovox video system yet? What do you think? Many of the local shops out here carry it, but I was curious if it blocks the review mirror.
I have time. My MDX won't be here until September (wife is pissed). |

I just completed another 1300 mile road trip (very flat, dull, boring roads) and thanks to you it was peace and harmony the whole way with my two children.
I did as you suggested. Bungie corded my DVD laptop between the two rear seats using the arm rest flipped back and the kids never became bored on the trip watching movies. They each had their own headphones toggled into the laptop so I could listen to CD's/tapes/radio.
Also, I was able to take laptop into hotel and watch DVD movies, surf Internet etc...while kids had command of hotel room TV!!
Thanks for sharing your great suggestion...it worked beautifully (not to mention didn't cost me anything except rental of DVD's) |

I have been corrisponding with the guys at Street Effects. I am thinking about putting in the ceiling mounted Audiovox system, but was concerned that it would block my rear view mirror.
He has an upgrade that can place a color screen in my rear view mirror and attach it to a color backup camera. This would allow your to have a "digital" rear view mirror.
I guess at that point you could even pipe video to your rear view mirror if you wanted. I think I will pass. I have a hard enough time paying attention now.
He also said that he could answer our question on whether the base "blue screen" display could produce a color image. All he needs is a wiring diagram for the unit. Can anyone provide me with this and I will forward it on.
I will post this question on a few more topics to see if I can get a response. |
