What do you think of the new 5? I like the front;) :2: but the side an the rear:16:
I like the E-class better IMO.
can provide a better link but this has a video
www.bmw.de
A pop-up of the 5 will come out. Click the video version. Click the paragraph that comes after. Takes 30 secs to load
P.S. Its in German:D :p |

I agree. Almost wish we waited for an 04.
Our 530i is far and away the most fun car to drive I have ever owned. |

Maik, is your 530i a manual? If so, is it true that the 5-series clutches are hard as hell to engage smoothly. In my 330i, the clutch was exceptionally smooth and easy to operate. Nothing "tricky" about it. |

| I ask because my dad is looking for a nice sedan in a stick. I told him that I really liked the new Infinities and of course the 5-series made by those engineering crazies at the Bavarian Motor Works.:29: |

| JESUS, excuse my pc incorrectness, that is the sedan i am going to get. SUVs are great, but i need an additional sedan, a touring sedan, i loved the flowing lines of the new E class, but this car turns me on. One quib, doesnt the back remind you of the Infinit I35? but otherwise, that isnt neccesarily a bad thing, this is hot hot hot hot, maybe (warning blasphemy ahead), i will trade in the x for one of these babies and still get myself that e benz i wanted..... joking joking joking.:1: |

I have to say that I don't like what BMW has been doing to the exterior styling of their sedans. I don't like the rear end of the new 7-series. I'm not crazy about the 5-series either. The front reminds me of a Pontiac Grand Am. The butt's pretty busy. The sides look like an older-gen Nissan Maxima.
Looks are totally subjective, of course. :D |

i can't wait for the first comparison test putting it up against the e-class, a6, i35, etc.
i think the new 5 series will again be considered the ultimate driving midsize sedan, winning by a wide margin.
however the exterior styling of the the e-class is by far the most beautiful and stylish of any car in its segment, IMHO.
although i love the interior of the new 5 series.

Thanks. To be honest, someone else told me about the Grand Am resemblance. I just thought I'd share it. :D
Mind you, if someone gave me one for free, I'd take it and love it. But I'm kinda disappointed about BMW's recent exterior styling of their sedans. I hope this doesn't mean they'll mess up the clean look of the 3-series when it comes up for redesign. |

I've had three 5 series and just love the things. I had a '97 540i/6, a '99 540/6 and currently my 2000 M5 that I bought when it first arrived. The cars are tight, trouble free, and just flat out beg to be driven. Nobody makes a V8 engine like BMW either. Unlike most other makes, BMW designs their torque range to be as flat as a pancake. You can lug the car around a slow corner in 6th gear and it just pulls strong from as low as 1000rpms. It's such a flexible powertrain and yet still smother than the LX-470 engine in my Lexus.
The great deal with them I find is the free maintenance which includes wearable items. I really don't pay for anything but gas. They will cover brake pads, rotors, clutches (normal wear out- not abuse from dragstrip launches) and all sorts of stuff that even Lexus says are wear items and not covered.
I'm on here trying to figure out if I should get the '03 MDX, XC-90 or GX-470 for my wife. You all have a good site and I've learned lots already. If anyone has questions on a 5 series though, blast away as I know the 540's & M5's pretty well by now. :)
Aussie
P.S. - Jon, you've heard the sticks are tricky to modulate and thats true for about a day of driving. In other words, if you buy one, you'll have no problems. If it were a Hertz rental car on the other hand, many people would be doing burnouts out of the parking lot! |

Sideview- Audi A4
Rear view- Japanese family sedan(u pick one).
IMHO, Not as hedious as the 7 series, but i'm not sure if its better than the present 5 series. Will hold final opinion for now. |

Way too much design. Where is the elegance?
It's kind of hard to explain. The BMW, my favorite car, is more than just a car brand, it is about the image. When you try too hard on the muscular head lights you are with the same level of korean cars.
It's just my personal taste. |

aussie2u,
Could not agree more. My wife's 530i is a blast to drive. Far and away the smoothest, quickest car I have ever driven. No comparason to vertually any other car in its class.
I laso love the MDX and find it to be a perfect complement to the 530. Its the workhorse of the stable and it fills this job quite well. I used to be a huge Volvo fan, but an sceptical now with Ford calling the shots. Also, I believe the MDX to be every bit as safe as the Volvo. Safety and reliability were the reasons for my former attraction to Volvo.
As I previously stated, I love the new 5 Series look.
Good luck with your descision, sounds like your wife will be a winner no matter which she chooses. |

And the readers of Automobile Magazine are comparing the new 6-series to the '04 Pontiac Bonneville - what is this world coming to?
Frankly I think that comparison is based largely on the "at-first-glance" similarity of the 5-spoke wheels in these two pictures...And of course the grills - A rather unfortunate ramification of BMW's continuing trend of widening the (what once was) trademark kidney-shape grille. |

How's the insurance for your M5 in the South Fla area? Im relocating to Miami in the next coming monthsand I'm thinking about fetching an M5 in the near future, but Im knda worried about having to pay an outrageous amount of money for insurance. |

I dont know of its exact release date but think Fall 2004 (2005 model). There is a spy shot of it in the May Automobile mag. I got a scan but I have to scale it down first.

I have USAA and no tickets so mines probably lower than most. Without going into exact coverage & such, the rate I pay a year was not much more than the '96 Volvo 850R I had before. Ask your rep for a rate quote. You'll probably find this area higher than yours in general but the M5 is not commanding any premiums. It's just a 5 series BMW four door sedan. And according to the insurance institute for highway safety, "if all cars were built like this, there would be no need to continue testing them" :D |

i think its the ugliest car i have ever seen. hate the inside, and geez, can those lines be any grosser. Im sorry, but i have loved the current 5 series and almost bought a 540, but im very happy with my X, and would never have waited for that ugly car. its even uglier then the 7 series which i also think is nasty.

........looks are purely a subjective thing (beauty is in the eye......etc.etc.)
However, that said, IMHO, I think this is one of the ugliest things to wear the BMW badge  The headlight "eyebrow treatment" looks HORRENDOUS  and the rear is just BUTT UGLY :28: (those atrocious tail lights :16: )
What happened to the STYLE, SOPHISTICATION AND FLAIR that was BMW?? ......These used to be some of the best styled vehicles....elegant, stylish and contemporary ......not anymore, I guess!
From a pure performance and "function" perspective, however, I'm sure it will still be one of best performing and handling sedans on the road! |
