I was looking at the 03 catalog and saw the passenger airbag switch on the dash. Does it deactivate the airbag? Why? So that child can sit on the passenger seat?
According to the catalog, airbag automatically deactivates when a passenger is under weight. |

That is only a light on the dash board to warn you that the airbag is off. It senses weight and automatically turns off the passenger airbag if the weight is too low or the seat sensors don't register enough height. If I set my laptop on the front seat and fasten the seat belt, then the airbag turns off. From pg 54 of the '03 owners manual:
Your vehicle has front passenger's weight sensors as part of the advanced airbag system. They are located under both of the front passenger's seat rails. These sensors monitor the weight on the seat at the seat cushion, seat-back, seat-back pocket, and seat rails.
If the total weight on the seat is about 65 lbs or less, the system shuts off the front passenger's airbag and the passenger airbag cutoff indicator comes on. It reminds you that the front passenger's airbag will not inflate during a crash.
If there is no passenger in the front passenger's seat, the passenger airbag cutoff indicator does not come on, however the system shuts off the front passenger's airbag.
Where in California are you? I'm in Modesto. |

True, but the switch is still handy, for example, if the person riding in the passenger seat weighs enough but is in a condition such that an airbag deployment would be unsafe.
For example, my wife is 8 months pregnant. She can no longer fit comfortably behind the wheel of her 2000 Mazda Miata, but likes to go for rides in it along the beach. I do the driving, but we turn the passenger airbag off because a sudden airbag deployment may unduly injure the baby. |

| Thanks for the info. I got curious because 02 doesn't have that light. I am from Sacramento. |

| I had some friends in the car last week. The guy in the front seat insisted on trying to push the Passenger Airbag light even though I told him it was not a button. |

Mine does, too!!!
On the '01 and '02, the light is an indicator that's mixed in the gauge cluster. |

| The passanger airbag only turns off when the weight is uneven leaning toward the window. Even if the passanger seat is empty the airbag will still deploy as long as there is not an uneven load on the seat. |

That's a source of amusement for me. EVERYBODY who gets into the car does two things:
1) Compliments me on one fine new ride and
2) tries to push the "button."
I'm thinking of re-labeling it "ejector seat" to see if they still try to push it. :) |

That's a no brainer. You know they'll push it! It's just human nature. :2: Now it would be real funny if they did and it was. :20: :21: :20: |

I used to work at a rock radio station that gave free tours to Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and lots of other kids' groups.
Just for fun, we labeled one of the ordinary light switches on the wall in the hall outside the transmitter room "Transmitter On" and "Transmitter Off." There wasn't a single tour where the light didn't go off for a few seconds.
Sometimes, it's the little things that can make an ordinary day fun. |
