that's it but not all of the sub screens available.

Most of the stuff in the displayed screens seems intimidating and something I wouldn't want to mess with.

What do you think the average everyday owner would be interested in changing or consider changing?

I know you can adjust the distance until empty (range) indicator in the trip computer which, by default, is set to read 0 (zero) miles when about 20 miles of fuel is still in the tank ( ~1 gallon).

This was posted a couple of months ago but is worth repeating because I don't think it is mentioned in the manual.

Adjust the brightness of the rear view camera

With the engine running, car in reverse, the rear view camera is on: push the AC/Info button on the navi control. An adjustment bar with touch screen controls will appear to allow for brightness adjustment. Touch the AC/Info button again and the adjustment bar will disappear.

I have not found this documented in the owners manual or Navi manual. As a matter of fact, when I went looking for the rear view camera info, I could not find a single word about it in any manual.

What is an "Easter Egg"? - The term "Easter Egg", as we use it here, means any amusing tidbit that creators hid in their creations. They could be in computer software, movies, music, art, books, or even your watch. There are thousands of them, and they can be quite entertaining, if you know where to look.

If my memory serves me, I think the first Easter Egg in a software program was Warren Robbinette's inclusion of his name in a secret room in the Atari 2600 game "Adventure" back in the mid-70's

I swear I saw on a 2002 Navi screen just a lcd circular compass and not the one that is a simple pointer. I have a 2003 did they stop making that compass?

On the 2001/2002 you only get the compass with the non navi models.

I like that compass better than the navi one. It's easier to read. I wish that compass was showing at all times whether I'm using the navi or not.

Same here.

I sometimes drive my wife's fleet Gran Prix and it has that simple N-S-E-W lcd window in rear view mirror. That would be fine as well.

Now if somebody could just hack the Navi software to get rid of that annoying intro/startup screen.

I'll second that.

True, these screens are not Easter Eggs. They're the NAV configuration/service screens. As a software developer, I always leave an Easter Egg in my code. Here's a rather sick one I did years ago. This was the original icon:

Here's the Easter Egg:

Not kids software, Investment software... very boring. ;) And I really can't take full credit, two of us did the animation.

The 'Tire Calibrate' screen looks interesting. If I change my tire size may be I use that to adjust for the difference?

I was able to get into the computer screen. Pretty neat! 2 questions on the GPS Info screen:

1. The date and time is displayed at the bottom. Is this satillite generated date and time info? I have a satillite clock in my home that I got at Wal Mart which grabs the time from the "sky."

2. I kept the GPS Info screen on while I drove in to work this morning. As I passed under canopy roads with lots of trees overhead (I live in Tallahassee), a couple of satilletes faded entirely or went in and out of "search" mode (they changed to a blue color). When I went into my parking garage at work (I park on the 3d floor up), all of the satilletes on the screen disappeared. However, the north-south function still worked, as the GPS circle moved in circles with my X. Also, my regular map Navi screen will follow me as I go up and around and up and around etc. So: without any satillites, how does the Navi know I am going in circles up the parking garage? Is there a "memory" of last location and the computer just guesses or perhaps enough residual signal to track me even though no satillites are showing the GPS Info screen?

Thoughts?

The Nav has an inertial navigation system as backup if you lose the satellites. It's hooked up to an INS sensor and the speedo. It's one of the advantages of an OEM built-in GPS, rather than a StreetPilot III.

If you look at the first screen posted in this thread, you see "Tire Calibrate" and "Yaw Rate", which probably tune this INS.

Are you sure you don't have an Atomic Clock and not a satellite clock? Mine sets automatically to the U.S. Atomic Clock’s WWVB radio signal in Colorado. I've never seen a satellite clock.

This is the one I have.

the gps system uses timing as the method of determining your position in space. basically, each satellite sends out a unique signal which arrives at your location at different times and given the known locations of each satellite, the receiver can then determine its location by "triangulation" (technically, it's not really triangulation, but it's close).

so basically, in each gps satellite, there is an atomic clock because a few nano seconds off could mean the difference of a few miles in accuracy. so as a "byproduct" of having a gps receiver, you also have a very accurate clock. all gps receivers also receive time signals from the satellites.

... and because a picture is worth a thousand words, you can find a very nice and illustrated explanation of how GPS works here:

I have a similar one, however, apparently the position of my atomic clock may not sufficient for radio signal reception. The time did not automatically 'spring forward' recently.

That particular model has a "DST On/Off" button on the back. If you put it to the "On" position, it'll add the hour.
Fredo
Yes, those atomic clock synchronizing from Boulder don't do it automatically 'cause they're not sure where you are: if you are in Arizona :1: for instance, there is no such thing as DST !

When you call the 555-1212, I believe it uses your area code to determine your actual time based on the Boulder clock.

How exactly do you do that? Which option do I adjust? Thanks!

Not sure if this is the same for '03 and '04 MDXs, but for calibrating the '01 and '02 Navis do the following.

Start the car, and Press OK on the disclaimer screen. Press and hold the keys in this order:
Menu, Map/Guide, and Cancel. Continue to hold all 3 for 5 seconds.

Press Trip Calibrate. You can now change the temperature reading offset and miles to empty offset. Miles may be set to a negative value, if desired, to help prevent you from running out of gas.

Hi, what is the "Yaw Rate" and what should the defaults be for CCW and CW? I was 'fiddling' with the belief that I could restore defaults via the reset button but not so! Thanks for any input and I promise to stop fiddling with things I know nothing about!!!

Also on the tuning screen what is the ANG-Disp?

Thanks all...

Could someone with an 06 Nav do me a favour and go into the settings screen (press MENU, MAP GUIDE and CANCEL) and into the Yaw Rate screen and take a picture or note the readings for CCW and CW?

I am worried that I have messed something up and will slide off the road!!

Thank you very much in advance.

Perfect! Thank you so much - I appreciate it... Mine all set back to how it should be now!
