My wife and I are looking for some vacation destination ideas from you. We went to Aruba for a week last year and the year before. This year we would love to go back, but we need to find a place that does not cost as much. We have a mid August week in mind, but that is hurricane time. So, to avoid the storms and still have good beaches, good accommodations, and good food... where do you go? Thanks for your help.

We love The Outer Banks, NC. The weather for the 4 times we've gone in the summer has been beautiful. We stay on the beach in Nag's Head right outside of Kill Devil Hills. Relatively inexpensive (and greatly so compared to the Jersey shore), clean, quiet and nice for a family outing. From right outside of Philly, it's approx 320 miles and takes about 6-7 hours depending on traffic.

Hurricane season is obviously still a worry there in August.

I would second the OBX also. If you wait till September (around 9/7 this year) the rates go way down. Because hurricane insurance is based on the rental amount it’s not bad. Two years ago we got this beautiful 5 story house (just the two of us) for $535/week in Salvo. This is kind of the southern end of the OBX and very quiet that time of year. In fact it might be too quiet for some but that is what we wanted.

Want to spend more money? Check into San Pedro Island off the coast of Belize (I think it was less than we spend on Aruba). Again, it’s quiet that time of year and it’s not for everyone but we loved it.

Good luck

For great sand beaches, sun, & unbelievably clear water, try northern michigan. It's about an 8 hour drive from Buffalo.

Check out Mackinac Island, Petosky, & Harbor Springs on the internet. The weather in August is great. Other places to look are in the Traverse Bay area.

Plus there are no hurricanes and the sun doesn't set until 10:30pm.

We recently returned from a 14 day South American cruise onboard the Celebrity Zenith. Ports of call included Buenos Aires. Iguazu Falls. Montevideo. Buzios. Ilhabela and Portobelo. But the highlight of the cruise was attending Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

I highly recommend visiting South America, especially Rio, Buenos Aires, and Buzios.

Without a doubt - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

When you're on top of the mountain standing next to that statue of Christ (Corcovado) you simply won't believe your eyes

An inexpensive great beach destination with lots to do and great restaurants is Virginia Beach. I was very surprised when we went there several years ago, and had a wonderful time.

You're right zubinh, the view was breathtaking, as well as the view at Sugar Loaf. Also, you've got to visit at least 2 beaches. Ipanema and Copacabana are must see beaches! :2:

Two questions spring to mind:

1. How can there ever be a shortage of sperm donors?
2. Zafer, how did YOU happen to find this advert?:p

You can't go wrong in northern Michigan.
