Hid installation review - Click HERE for Original Thread

Yeppie!! just got my X last night and put Hid light kit on from xenondepot from the group buy. Steve the owner was very nice and had excellent customer service. Everything he said about his lights are true. He shipped out my lights in two days and called me to answer any questions I had.

I took my X home last night at about 9:00 and started working on the HID 5000k kit installation right away. The stock OEM lights were pretty sad after you have been used to driving with BMW projector HIDS. Installation took 1:45. Almost 50 minutes of that time was just finding a place to put and secure the ballasts. Luckily our Xs have two shelves or frame rails under the head lights on both sides and I zipped tied and velcroed them in place. Harmon1 did a good review of where to put everything so I just improvised with his install directions. I installed the relays on both sides using the fan shroud screws perfect fit. I then zipped tied and plugged everything together and BAM I got XENONS. The kit from xenondepot was definitely the easiest DYI kit I have ever worked on. I am not mechanically inclined and did it quite well with the instructions provided. Light output is awesome not as good as my BMW with projector HIDS but very bright and good color. The light dispersment of the factory reflector gives more of a flood light effect where the BMW lights were more of a focused light effect. Either way the X with HID is a must. So here are the steps.

1. Find a place to put ballasts.
2. Pull OEM bulbs out and put Xenon Bulbs in. Connect them to
the ballasts.
3. Find a place to put relays.
4. Connect relays to Old OEM 9006 harness from the original
bulbs. Xenon depot made a special connector for this and is so easy.
5. Connect the plug from relay to ballasts.
6. Connect relays positve to battery and then connect negative to any frame screw.

That was it. Hooking up the plugs and wires took 30 seconds but organizing the cords and finding a place to put the ballasts and relays took an hour.

By the way the MDX rocks its the best car I have ever driven. I hate to admit it but it rides plusher then my Lexus GS 400 and fairly sporty, not as good as my BMW but for the amount of luxury and space I'll take the X. Navigation unit is just incredible. I have not felt any weird tapping of the gas pedal when you shift from drive but Ill keep looking. Its only got 21 miles on it so far. Next install will be the wood steering wheel.

I will post pics of car in day time and night with HIDS later. For anyone looking to upgrade anything do yourself a favor and get the HIDS first. Not only does it help for saftey reasons but it just looks classy. Acura should include these from the beginning.:D :D

Glad you're satisfied!

A nick-nack here,a nick-nack there-
Pretty soon we're all driving $55,000 MDX's!

By the way, I'm jealous of your HID's. Gotta get me some of those.

LOL, It's just the beginning... I'm be eager to view your profile in a few months...
tvmdx03
Man look at your profile. You now own a 80,000 dollar SUV :) . Actually I moded every car Ive owned. On my GS400 I put the Millen enhancements and L-tuned stuff on it. On my BMW I put Dinan stuff on it. Hopefully with the MDX I wont have to go to extreme on it. At least they give us Euro clears for free.

tvmdx03,

Any chance you'll install projectors in the headlamps? Since you've done a lot of mods, I can always hope.

:D
tvmdx03
I would install projector HIDS if Xenondepot develped them. The kit they sold me was so easy and plug and play. Otherwise I dont want to modify any factory stuff unless its plug and play. I read up on projector HID mods and they can be very hairy. IMO projector Hids are the best lighting for cars, they are very clear, sharp and brighter.
For right now Ill settle for the flood light beam pattern from the Acura reflectors with the HIDS, I could not imagine living without xenons, Im sure you would agree.

I don't know how some people will make out of this:

People who hate HIDs are the ones that have never used them before and or cannot afford a car that has them and are jealous. I have never been blinded by other peoples HIDS unless they were ricers who modified their HIDS to 8000k and aimed the headlights to high.

could you snap some pics of your engine bay with the lights installed?
DUBYA123
whats even worst than hids, is a F150 with superbright halogens, that dont project properly. Everybody's, complaining about HIDS, if they ban HIDs Im sure phillips lighting will think of something else..:D
tvmdx03
Bright LEDs will be the next lighting source according to tech magazines.
DUBYA123
very true

Ive got the pics but cant shrink the attributes low enough to post them. The server keeps saying they are to big but I cant go any lower without cutting all the important pieces out.

I drove my '86 Porsche 944 last night for the first time in months (at night) since putting HID's in my X. I thought the battery was nearly dead because the light seemed so dim. The battery was fine.
jswift2000
This is where I mounted mine:
Passenger side near resever for radiator on shelf
jswift2000
Drivers side - there is a shelf in fron of the battery but my cables were stretching so I mounted mine on a bar on an angle near the battery. Hard to get a good shot of that...

Cleaning up wires - I zip-tied them to the wires near the back of the engine bay

Wow!!!
tvmdx03
I did exactly what you did Jswift. But I ran the wires over the fan shroud using the existing holes to secure with zip ties. You cant even tell if I had wires there. It looks factory. Yeah I love my HIDS on the X the pics of before and after are really that spectacular. Everyone should do this as their first mod. The difference is amazing.

Jswift,
I was think about mounting projectors inside the fogs , instead of the headlamps. what do you think?

jswift2000
Projectors in the fogs - not a bad idea. I thought about moving the HIDS to the fogs.
DUBYA123
I got HIDS in the fogs, defin should, but since the fogs are mostly on the ground, the cutoff wont be on the oncoming drivers eyes, just on the road. NOw i have to find a place that sell mdx fog lights any sources?

Have had HID as low beams now for 8 months, and maybe got flashed one time. A decent set with your lights properly aimed, you should not have a problem.
