I was in the local auto parts store today, and noticed Rain X Wax for the first time. For the last year or so, I have been a huge Zaino fan, but I decided to give Rain X a try since I have always had good success with their other products. What was interesting (at least to me) was that although the box was clearly labeled "wax", the descriptive literature mentioned its polymer attributes. I am still a little confused as to how it can be both, but I will leave that to the detailing gurus. It actually seemed to display traits of both. There was the usual wax dust after the buff, but it wiped cleanly away on the plastic pillars between the doors. Overall, it was very easy to apply, it dried in no time and I was able to wipe it off by the time I finished. Had I used Zaino today, it would have taken several hours to be ready to wipe off as temps were around 60 degrees.
I have no idea how well it will hold up, but I was quite impressed with the results. |

is the original thread on this topic. I, too, was confused as to what exactly RainX "wax" was. It claimed to have the abilities of a syn, but dried to a powdery residue like most carnaubas (P21S is a notable exception). I liked the results, but don't know how much was due to all the coats of Zaino I put on and how much was due to RainX. But one thing is for certain and that is no powdery residue with Z.
Maik, I apply Zaino in 60 degrees with ZFX and it is ready for buffing after about 10-15 minutes. If you haven't done ZFX, try it.

Same here at 50 degrees.
Did you apply the rain-X over Zaino? |

| eagle, yep, I did and I know Sal is right now turning over in his Z7 bath hearing me say this. Funny, thing....my X is just as smooth to the touch after RainX as Zaino, even prior to Z6 application. Shine looks good. Even applied RainX to the windshield like I did Zaino. Shine looks the same. Durability seems good. So my problem is... is it the Zaino talking or the RainX?:8: |

| Octavain, I wonder what will happen if you put another coat of Zaino over the Rain-X. Sal would probably say to strip off the other stuff. Or what will it do if you do a QD with Z6 over the Rain-X? |

| I called RainX this AM and spoke to a technical advisor (?) who told me that the product is indeed a wax that has been formulated with some polymer. He told me that it is fine to build up layers, as I had done with Zaino. I asked about durability, and was given the standard disclaimer that there are too many variables to give any type of estimate, but I suspect that it will not last the six months or so that Zaino gives us. In any event, I give it a thumbs up in ease of use, shine and lack of streaking. :29: |

| Their explanantion makes a lot of sense to me.....it has both wax and polymer qualities. I will next Zaino over it in the next couple of weeks....if anything unnatural happens I will let you guys know! |

| The jury is in, the mind is made up. I reapplied Z2 over the RainX. Went on fine as usual. Seems like it came off easier. But Zaino still rules as far as gloss is concerned. Plus no powdery residue, of course. I think I will do RainX when I really need to Zaino but am too lazy. Overall it's easier to apply and remove. You can slather it on and not worry about streaking or applying too much. But I'm still a Z-man. :D |
