I should have taken a picture of it (I will next time), but last Christmas going home from grandma's we had an obscene amount of stuff behind the second row seat. I "Tetris-packed" everything, there really wasn't more than a few inch gap between some items (and only because they were shaped irregularly!). It blew away my in-laws when they saw that I had gotten everything in there without having to resort to folding down the seat, and without blocking rearward vision.
Car & Driver's "beer case" test is probably the most revealing about real-world, useable cargo capacity. A lot of vehicles claim a lot of cubic feet, but much of it is in strange crannies, or above where you're supposed to safely stack cargo. E.g. a Pathfinder with the second row folded down claims a tad bit more cubic feet than an MDX with its second row folded, but there's no contest when it comes to who has more real cargo room (and obviously with the second row up, the MDX has a huge amount more).
In Car & Driver's review, the MDX held more beer (just don't drink it in the vehicle!) than the RX300 (no surprise), X5 (duh), Montero, and the ML320 (which is probably the closest in cargo room). |

To augment what Daniel, our esteemed administrator posted I have taken two photos of my MDX cargo tray on top of my old Yukon cargo tray to show the relative size. The first photo shows just the difference in depth with the Yukon being 10" deeper. The second photo shows that there is no difference in cargo area width between the two vehicles which I think is impressive. Let's see if I post the photo correctly since I can't seem to preview it.
