Has any of you experienced vibrating brake pedal during braking on bumpy streets or rocky roads.

I don't know if this is happening to my X only. When I try to step on the brake pedal to stop or slow down on bumpy roads, I can feel that the pedal is jumping according to the road condition.

Is this due to the braking system mounted on the front suspension ? Any comments appreciated.

I believe it's the ABS at work...my Maxima did the same thing when the road was bumpy or rough. My added question...should we now jam on the brake harder to help stop the car on this type of pavement?

Correct... I'm still getting used to that strange vibration...

I felt the same thing when I made a "panic" turn and slammed on the brake. It was quite unnerving while it was happening , but I realized after the fact that the ABS was probably "pumping" the brakes for me. It was weird, but I guess they worked. This has only happened to me once(, which is a good thing!)

......to my MDX!! When hitting hard potholes and LIGHTLY applying the brake I get a "buzzing/vibrating" feel through the pedal. However, in my case, it happens if I hit potholes and at the same time LIGHTLY depress the gas pedal as well!!

The other day I was making a U-turn, and at the same time as I had the steering wheel fully turned to the left, I pressed the gas pedal, and it made a sort of loud "screeching/vibrating/buzzing" kinda sound

Its normal, my pedal does it too.

By the way, got to appreciate making U-turns, you need as much space as a go-cart, i.e. the turning space required.

okay...my pedal also vibrates due to the abs.

BUT, that's not why I'm posting.. Today I disovered that my brake pedal wiggles left and right about half and inch either way....

I didn't notice it last friday when i picked up the x. Is this normal? I remember that my old accord had some wiggle in the pedal but not this much...

pedal vibration due to abs or vtm ...yes.

pedal play yes... but only slight possibly 1/4 inch

The small play left to right is totally normal. They all do it and Acura considers it a direct consequence of the design. There are some older threads with more detail...

ABS is working

I think you're not talking about ABS. ABS is a rapid pulsation in the brake pedal (more than once per second). If you've never felt it before, you think your brakes have a serious problem. In any case, you should only feel the ABS when you really jam the brake pedal down. (Maybe other cases with '03 VSA.)

So, the next possibility is the side-to-side play in the MDX brake pedal. It can play about half an inch side-to-side. This is normal. You can feel it on smooth roads or at a stop: just depress the brake pedal and shift your foot from side-to-side, the pedal will follow.

If it's neither one of those, I'm inclined to think there's something amiss. Please provide more detail.

Not so! ABS comes into play whenever it senses a wheel locking up, whether the brake pedal is jammed down or not. And under the circumstances described, or on sand, gravel, wet leaves, snow, etc., a wheel can lock easily under light brake pedal force.

I stand corrected. (Guess where I do most of my driving? Like 17500 out of 17510 miles are on pavement.)
Frosty, when the ABS kicks in under the circumstances you describe, does it feel the same way as when you panic brake? If it does, maybe it's the ABS after all.

ABS...

My experience w/ ABS, Traction control (on an 01 accord v6) and VSA on the 03mdx...

If you accelerate with Traction control on...on a bumpy or slick road, you can definately hear the ABS kick in....

If you brake going and you hit a dip or a pothole while braking hard...even if you are going very slowly...ABS kicks in and the car rolls forward much more than you would expect it to.

VSA..I have no idea to tell if this is working!! but that may be a good thing too! :)

After reviewing all your comments, I started to think the brake pedal vibration may not be due to the ABS at work. The brake pedal jumps slightly when the X drives over a piece of rock or un-even pavement could be the result of vibration transmitted from the front suspension absorpting the shock. I believe this is how the X is designed. I have owned other cars, most of them don't have vibration on the brake pedeal like this even cars with ABS.

Yes -- the vibrating pedal feels the same whenever the ABS is working (same on my '93 Explorer, too).

I have not experianced what you described in my MDX :29: yet, nor in my Toyota 4runner :29: , both have anti-lock brakes...... but I have experienced it in my Ford F150 :28: .......and its a most distressing feelling !
timbrwolf9
Yes, I would imagine that it is the ABS kicking in. I know my Vette does the same thing.
jedi_gras
Actually..I just experienced the real "vibrating brake pedal" today. It was vibrating at a much higher frequency than ABS would permit.

Maybe it's the resonance from the vibration of the brake pad against the rotor? As soon as I felt it, I released the brake and depressed it again. It was gone. (It occured while slowly braking at about 5-10mph)

I know what ABS feels like...this wasn't it.

It IS the brake, ABS. I doubt if it is the stability control. Specifically, when wheels are going over bumps seperately, as in rough surface, sometimes one gets less traction, or may even be airborne for a fraction of a second. ABS thinks you are spinning and applies the brake periodically which you feel as a vibration. It is a good thing, keeps you straight (!)...:) :D

Wiggly brake pedal? This made me laugh real loud and rushed all kinds of mental images thru my brain!

Maybe we pay too much attention to these man-made machines. I know what my wife would say. lol..

I drove from New England to Florida twice this past winter, you will notice the play in the brake pedal side to side, when you drive barefoot! Then it really is unnerving:3:

I've assumed the vibration was transmitted from the road. I have felt ABS in other cars (I drove the TurboZ home on ice once) and it doesn't make me think of ABS.
