I don't know if this has been mentioned before, or if it is a newer feature. Apparently the AutoNation company has a uniform system of displaying inventory.
They only own four Acura stores (none of which have particularly uniform comments in the dealer ratings here...).
The cool thing is you can see "paint sequencing" where there will be silver or white MDXs separated by only a few VIN numbers. The standard Acura online app has just stock numbers until you drill into a listing (and most dealers don't have very frequent updates to their web sites, which leads to erroneous VINs).
Has anybody had success using the inventory systems to locate a model they want?

...the AutoNation online inventory presents the COLOR & VIN on the "front page"of the search.
This is very slick to try and see WHEN the factory was producing a particular color. You can look at the VIN and you will see three black (or silver or red or whatever) at the same dealer (or even the four AutoNation dealers spread across the country) that either right next ti each in sequence or just a digit or three apart.
As I said, the rating for the AutoNation dealers don't seem very uniform, so I would not endorse any purchase from them, but for folks who want a particular color & model AND BE SURE that the dealer is not making something up, this seems like a step in the right direction.
Personally, I wish all dealerships would adopt that type of online inventory. The "stock number" approach is just another silly effort to keep info from potential buyers. Why waste time ordering a vehicle if another dealer has it on the lot -- oops that may be why dealers use the "hide the color, only report stock number" approach.
BTW I have seen MUCH more unifrom information in the GM & Ford online systems by dealers who sell those lines... |

Seems strange (well, not really I guess..) that Acura would not provide such information, after all they are closest to it. I agree, it is very limited unless it serves all potential customers.
Ford was also the first I believe with the Oasis system to track all their vehicles by VIN for service and warranty info at any Ford dealer.
Such a 'backbone' is essential if you really want to maintain warranty and service info and have vehicle history readily available even if the car changes ownership.
It means a lot when you buy a used vehicle and can go a dealer and even find out what oil the previous customer used. Of course, it falls down if the customer does ALL his own maintenance (or does not do any!.... ) |
