I've looked in the manual and navigation manual and can't find anything on what I'm seeing on my screen.

What I'm seeing in certain areas are random white dots aligned in strange patterns, mostly in unmapped areas such as a large mall by us or new development.

I know they're not bread crumbs but they sure do confuse me.

If anyone has ANY idea what I'm talking about, it would be appreciated. I may just call the dealer and see if he knows what they stand for (the white scattered dots)

I'll see if tomorrow I can post a picture showing you what I mean.

Thanks again!

They sure sound like bread crumbs, they are left in any area you travel not recognized as a road, or street. It has happend to me in a mall paking lot.
OP MDX
I wish I didn't know what they were! I get them all the time. Our area isn't mapped very well.

... I have found it useful on one occasion. This feature can be turned off (or at least you can on the '01 & '02).

It most definitely sounds like the breadcrumb feature, and you can turn it off in the '03. It's on one of the 4 subscreens in the setup area.

I have found that the white dots which are larger than the bread crumbs correspond to street lights on my map. These lights seem to
be larger than the regular ones on .

Maybe I'm wrong, but they almost align perfectly with my nav map.

My questions doesnt have to do with the breadcrumbs (i never see them) but also the dinging that happens when you reach the destination. I think this was a feature in the 2001 and 2002 model.

Dude, are you actually suggesting that they mapped the location of street lights? With the streets of entire towns and neighborhoods missing, they mapped street lights? It's gotta be something else...

It is possible that along some controlled access roadways the lights are spaced a uniform distance, like ten to the mile. If so, the GIS from navtech might include reference marks that line-up with the lights.

Similarlly, the spacing of breadcrumbs is probably sent to show up every tenth of mile, so that too could make things line up...

Thanks for all your help!

I guess it was breadcrumbs since when I turned off the feature, the dots disappeared.

It's just I personally never saw or noticed it dropping crumbs in the first place nor did the crumbs on my screen look at all like they did on the recent 2003 TL commercial, so I guess I just never put two and two together.

Overall, if what I had was breadcrumbs on my screen (99.99% sure), they need to update them so they noticeably drop many dots so you can find your way home instead of random dots spaced far apart.

Although, I don't think I'll be getting lost much except maybe at the Old Orchard parking lot so this may all be a moot point...

The dots appear random at close range because of the error in the GPS - the dots are placed at the exact locations recorded by the GPS in that particular time interval. When you're navigating on a digitized road, the GPS "snaps" the icon to the road, so there's no lateral error.

If you make multiple passes on the same road (er, off-road), you will see the scatter due to GPS error. If you zoom out to the 2 mile scale or greater, the scatter is small, but it's really obvious at 1/20.

Gee ghost,
I thought you ran out of bread crumbs or are you just reflecting on past experience?;)
