Yeah! Monday marks the smoking ban going into effect in all of Boston. Sweet! No more smellin' like a Philip-Morris factory when I come back home from a night out. :1:

Boston joins LA, NY, and the state of Delaware as smoke-free. In 2004, Ireland and Norway will become smoke-free as well. DANG a whole country. Wow.

And yet, in some places, smoking weed is already, or is going to be legalized. (they say for medicinal purpose) right!

California has had no smoking in public places including the workplace for years now. As a non-smoker, you forget how foul the air used to be in restaurants and bars and how your clothing and hair stunk of tobacco. Opponents of the law had predicted the death of bars, restaurants and other places where people would have smoked--didn't happen. California also heavily taxes cigarettes. At prices of about $35-45 a carton, the stores now have the cigarettes in secured areas. Proceeds from the taxes have gone into State sponsored PR programs to try to get kids from starting and to get adults to stop, likely with a tremendous return on public health savings.

Well, prohibition did not work, and alcohol related deaths due to driving have gone down significantly, but it is still the biggest link in all serious crimes, domestic disputes, teenage deaths, and divorces.

Everything has some degree of responsibility attached to it. That will never change.

Saw a piece on 20/20 or maybe it was 60 Minutes or some other show, but in New York City, now that there is no smoking in bars (a bouncer got stabbed and killed tyring to enforce the ban), people who have apartments above restaurants and bars are going crazy, as they can't open their windows for fresh air, as there are hoards of smokers on the sidewalks in the evening, generating clouds of smoke that waft up.

I thought you were a lawyer -- you sound like a preacher shouting from the pulpit against booze! Do you want to ban ALL disgusting habits, or just the ones you don't happen to share?

Smoking is a disgusting habit. Your putting tar, nicotene and smoke into your lungs - get with the program... its not good for anyones health and I dont think we're far from the day were smoking is banned from all public places. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and do what they like.

Nice to know the sentiments regarding smoking are shared with non-Californian members. One thing I have to remind myself of everytime I travel (domestic and international) is that Cali smoke laws don't extend everywhere. I had severe culture shock in recent trips to Miami, Buenos Aires, Rio, Buzio, ect... people actually smoking inside a building! :1: :26: :13:

Oh yes, and even bus drivers, truck drivers, and others who drive employers' vehicles for a living here in CA have to get out of their vehicle if they light up, its hilarious to drive by these folks :5:

You are quite right, they only get to smoke on their breaks, but is funny to see it :2:

Enenthough I smoke socially(usually when drinking), I would love it if smoking was banned. I hate it when my clothes stink from a night out.
