I'm thinking about towing a rental boat, but don't have the tow hitch. I read previously that a few of you have the hidden hitch, what is the weight limit for the hitch?
Also, I'm in Northern Cali and will probably be heading to Tahoe, will I have much problem towing a boat up the mountain areas?
Next question: Where is a good place to get the hidden hitch? I know the X has great potential, but I haven't been off roading or anything of the sort, I only use it to transport the fam around the Sac--San Fran area.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you are going through Donner Pass on I-80 or to South Lake Tahoe via Hwy 50, you are going to get to about 7000 feet elevation at one point. Keep in mind a couple of things. The rated max trailer weight for a BOAT trailer with 2, 3 or 4 occupants (150 lbs each) and 15 pounds of cargo, is 4500 lbs. OTHER TYPES of trailers rate out at 3500. BUT----the max GCWR (Gross combined Weight Rating) must be reduced 2 percent for every 1,000 feet of elevation.
So, figure a 14% reduction going over the pass. The MDX has a GCWR of 9700 lbs at sea level with proper fluid coolers. WIthout the coolers, who knows. So, you can do the math. That's a reduction of 1358 lbs total. That's a big hit on the vehicle's capabilities. All of this info is right from the 03 owner's manual. |

Thanks for the info. After reading some of the other threads I'm probably not going to go through the upgrade. It looks like to much of a hassle for something that I "might" only use once or twice a year if that.
   |
