Boat towing with X - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm thinking about towing a rental boat, but don't have the tow hitch. I read previously that a few of you have the hidden hitch, what is the weight limit for the hitch?

Also, I'm in Northern Cali and will probably be heading to Tahoe, will I have much problem towing a boat up the mountain areas?

Next question: Where is a good place to get the hidden hitch? I know the X has great potential, but I haven't been off roading or anything of the sort, I only use it to transport the fam around the Sac--San Fran area.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you are going through Donner Pass on I-80 or to South Lake Tahoe via Hwy 50, you are going to get to about 7000 feet elevation at one point. Keep in mind a couple of things. The rated max trailer weight for a BOAT trailer with 2, 3 or 4 occupants (150 lbs each) and 15 pounds of cargo, is 4500 lbs. OTHER TYPES of trailers rate out at 3500. BUT----the max GCWR (Gross combined Weight Rating) must be reduced 2 percent for every 1,000 feet of elevation.

So, figure a 14% reduction going over the pass. The MDX has a GCWR of 9700 lbs at sea level with proper fluid coolers. WIthout the coolers, who knows. So, you can do the math. That's a reduction of 1358 lbs total. That's a big hit on the vehicle's capabilities. All of this info is right from the 03 owner's manual.

Thanks for the info. After reading some of the other threads I'm probably not going to go through the upgrade. It looks like to much of a hassle for something that I "might" only use once or twice a year if that.
