I have been looking for a MDX for about 2 months now. I live in the Bay Area where pricing is MSRP or a few hundred dollars below. When I started looking in February, most Bay Area dealers were taking orders and selling at MSRP with no negotiating. Recently Bay Area dealers are starting to have some stock but dealers are still having the advantage in pricing. The best I could do was $500 below MSRP with no forced accessories.
I personally hate paying MSRP and didn't really need a new car so I was going to take my time in ordering one. I contacted through email every dealer in the Bay Area, even tried some in SoCal. Some dealers were very rude (and I won't waste my time naming those but they have been mentioned on this forum before) and others were friendly and offered great service but wouldn't budge on pricing. I ended up placing a deposit locally and when the vehicle came in, I wasn't ready to take delivery because I hadn't had a chance to sell my old car.
During the time, I kept visiting this forum and searching for better pricing. I ended up seeing a post on this forum in one of the "How much did you pay" threads and sent out an email. I ended up contacting a dealer in San Antonio, TX - Gunn Acura.
My contact was Doug Trahan and he told me that their dealership was not commission based but sales based and the pricing for MDXs was as follows:
182 - 32,999
186 - 35,999
188 - 37,999
189 - 39,748
I couldn't believe it at first cause they were selling MDX Touring/Nav at the price Bay Area dealers are selling MDX Touring.
Gunn didn't have the color I wanted so I ended up ordering a Sage Brush Pearl MDX Touring Nav that was in production and should be delivered in 3 weeks. It would take an additional week to ship to me which is fine. Shipping ended up costing $620 from dealer door to my door. I will end up saving about $2,200 on the X.
At first I was very nervous about ordering an MDX out of state but Doug answered all my questions and this forum helped out too.
A couple of things stick out in my mind: First, Doug didn't even push any accessories. In fact, he suggested that I check out www.hondacuraworld.com for the basic accessories that I could self-install and said that they could install any other accessory that I couldn't do myself. Wow!
Second, he offered to take pictures for me of the X when it arrived and when it was being loaded onto the shipping truck. Very nice gesture.
I just received my VIN and am very very excited about getting the MDX. Can't wait and counting down the days till it is here. Although chrome side steps are popular here, I think I am going with the running boards. For some reason, the side steps don't look good on a SBP X in my opinion.
Hopefully others (especially those on the East and West Coast where demand is still high) on this forum can share in the great pricing I got. And if some are afraid of "ordering" a car, at least they can have a bargaining chip with local dealers. Hopefully, local dealers can smarten up and stop this nonsense.
Doug's email address is acuraonline@yahoo.com.
I am in no way connected to this dealership. I have seen how some react on this forum to dealer postings and am smarter than that to try something. I just want everyone to share the experience I have had and also teach some local dealers lessons in customer service and salesmanship.
I will definitely be posting pics when my MDX comes in. Also does anyone have thoughts/concerns about ordering an out of state MDX that they will not see until it is delivered. I am still a little concerned but it is worth the risk if I can save $2,200. |

Awfully strange, since the info I have from Kelly is that the dealer invoice on the car with shipping is $32661.82. Granted, there may be some "trunk money" and holdbacks for the dealer, but in the present market, you are saying this guy sold the car for basically for $338 over cost. Hard to imagine why they would have to do so, the marketplace being what it is. I bought a base model in March 03 for $1250 under MSRP and all options at cost. Interesting. |

Thank You Aluu for sharing your experience. I will certainly contact Doug when it comes time to lease an X later this year.
Again, thanks for the referral. You got a damn good deal.
Now, who out there knows alot about "Sales Based" Acura dealerships. Cause I 'd sure like to talk to them! |

I was very skeptical at first when he quoted me the prices but as each day goes by, I am a little more conforted especially since I now have a VIN. And I spoke and emailed him and I haven't found any reason not to trust him. Hopefully this all works out and I have my X in a few weeks and others can share too. |

| Interesting, with a hot selling car like the MDX, most dealers wants to make the most they could. Remember, you still have to pay Ca. sales tax. |

How about leasing? Do they do leasing with those prices?
Thank you for sharing the info. |
|
|
| A6MDX |
Yes, it shouldn't make a difference if you are buying or leasing. With a lease you need to negaotiate the best price just as if you were purchasing. You also need to keep track of other things like the residual and money factor when leasing. Along with the purchase price these are the major factors that you need to negotiate.
Check out this link for help with leasing.
http://www.carbuyingtips.com/lease.htm
If you plan on leasing the software they review (LeaseWizard) is a worthwhile purchase. |

Isn't a new 2003 model car in year 2003 should include the depreciation since the 2004 model is coming?
It's just make sense. |
|
|
| vancouver |
| It may make sense, but the dealers hold on to their prices as long as possible, and the 2004 won't be seen until October. They also seem to play games with the pricing so you don't know the 2004 price until the last minute. |

Unfortunately sophisticated concepts like "resale" & "depreciation" are virtually unknown to the New Car dealers' pricing model. They care about one thing -- moving 'em off the lot. When they move slow they cut prices. When they move fast they hold prices. When they 'move' before they come onto to the lot the dealers try to extract "Adjusted Market Value".
I can't say I hold anything against 'em (unlike a certain other member of my household...) for a pricing model that is basically "what the market will bare". I do, however, wish that there was/is more 'customer service & knowledge' provided for the money they receive. |

:awais: I received an email from Doug restating the price on 182 is actuall $33,999. I am still thinking about buying from them, I wish their dealer ratings were higher.
I am going to buy the MDX while on the road and then take it on an extended road trip. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences doing this? |

For the money we are spending, dear, we should get free car washes forever and all our cargo stuff and our running boards. If our car looks good, they look good. And I like the idea I saw here about charging the dealer for advertising their name on our car (I am willing to barter for the aforementioned accessories. I will stop short of humiliating a salesperson, but for the obscene amount of money we are going to be spending, it crossing my mind isn't wrong!
Maybe I should change my alias to renov8rix!:twak: :twak: |

| New to the forum, but have been following for months. Finally ready to bite the bullet. In the Carolinas dealers are discounting 1000-1500 off MSRP. We've got 4-5 dealers in 100 miles radius. Competition is a good thing! |

We are "fortunate" to have NINE Acura stores within a 45 mile radius of Chicago, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY COMPETE ON PRICE !!!
In that magical place called "AHMC Allocation Central" (also known as OZ...) the "man behind the curtain' seemingly cannot churn out MDX fast enough to meet supply. Thus shopping means not only trying to find an MDX in the color/option level of your liking, but dreaming of sub-MSRP prices that seem to exist only in far away lands such as "Ohio" & "Texas"... |

Just a little update...
My MDX arrived at Gunn Acura last Friday. Doug arranged to have all the paperwork sent Airborne Express to me the following day. I signed everything and sent it back on Tuesday. My MDX was picked up by A-1 Transportation on Wednesday and hopefully it arrives Monday or Tuesday next week. I am getting really impatient and hopefully there is no shipping delays.
Overall a great experience. Everything has gone as expected. No real surprises. Any doubts I had about the pricing disappeared when I received my buyer's order. I ended up with a 188 SBP MDX Touring w/ Nav. for 37,999 + 168.08 in fees/taxes = 38,167.08. Shipping was $620 from TX to CA which is paid directly to A-1.
I had planned on financing the MDX through Peoplefirst at 3.74% but Gunn Acura was able to get me financied through Chase at 3.19%
So far I am a happy customer... |

| I just got my 188 MDX in Los Angeles (Blk/Blk) for 1250 below MSRP with free cargo cover, cargo net, wheel locks and mud guards. If your not particular with the color, you can get as much off as $2500 (with min. effort). |

I also considered buying from Gunn, was quoted the same price alluu and others are referring to, and Doug seems to be an awfully great guy, but they didn't have the color/model combination I wanted + I didn't want to take the third party risk (shipping co.).
So I ended up buying from a PA dealer. For 188 silver/quartz I paid 40,300 and included (for free) were wood steering wheel and knob, and moonroof visor, absolutely no fees, just temp tags and I will pay tax here in VA (I live in DC area) when I register the car. BTW 1) delivery was to my door and flawless and 2) they didn't have the car I wanted initially, but one was coming to another dealership and they made an "electronic swap" so the car went directly to them and then to me -- 250mi on the odometer at delivery but I am OK with it.
PS: the car is absolutely worth my over 2-month search and nogotiations. And the money of course. |

| My dealership is Dave White Acura in Toledo. Chris does the internet sales and was very good to work with compared to some dealers I talked to in Michigan. I wasn't in a hurry so I had no pressure to buy and remember patience is key. They are a small dealership so they may only have one or two MDX's on the lot so you may have to wait. Good luck and let us know your results. |

Have you got your MDX yet? How it looks like? I have contacted Doug Trahan recently, however his quote is only $2001 off the MSRP. Comparing the price they quoted to you, it is quite bit higher. Any insight why they raised their price?
Thanks!

They don't have the color/model I want {blue 188} and say they won't extend the special on non-stock units (though for the LIFE OF ME I cannot understand why, as they'd still be making WELL OVER $1000 bucks for very little effort just for lining up a deal with me...)

Hi Renov8r:
___$3K off an 03 X! That is one Lava Hot Smokin deal! That almost pays off a Touring’s RES and Navi for those that were not interested in a loaded out X before. Damn, if I would have only known ;)
___I am sure someone on this board that is just now considering an X will be purchasing one off Goodson’s lot this very weekend! $3K makes a flight or drive from just about anywhere in the lower 48 worth it in my book.

I really question this deal. I called under two different names. First there was no white one as I asked for... only a "black and tan one left". He offered a white one in ten days for $2000 off MSRP. I called back later today and asked for a black MDX. He then only had a blue one left.
I'm not saying that this deal didn't exist, but I suspect that the one you want will never be in stock. They are willing to give 2K off MSRP for those cars not in stock. There are lots of dealers willing to go 2K off MSRP.
Did anyone here actually buy one 3K off MSRP? No add on fees, no accessories, no paint protection, no VIN etching, etc? |

Congratulations. It sounds like you did much research on getting the best deal out there.
But please be aware of the Customer Service and loyalty factor. You would be lucky to get this when ordering from somewhere out of state. I did pay MSRP with some accessories included and installed, they are warranteed with the vehicle. In my case, that would be the steps, side moldings, cargo tray, net and all weather mats. I negotiated the steps and moldings at cost installed, not the retail value installed. You also develop a business and even a personal relationship with the staff at the dealership, particularly the sales manager and my sales person (who is also the Internet Manager).
Another case of dealership loyalty (Acura of Lynnwood). I'm a perfectionist, so when I took delivery of my MDX I noticed some scratches on the black front grill and black portion of bumper (like scuff marks). You can notice these marks only when close up, so I was willing to live with this under the condition that the dealership would do something about it. The dealership took it as a "We Owe". Two weeks later, when the service department gave me the options (they would have to replace the grill and the entire front bumper unpainted), I said no way. I did not want them taking the MDX apart. That would be like having a body shop working the car from an accident. So they offered me as a consolation additional accessories installed. So I decided that would be OK, so I selected the rear tailgate deflector installed (about $550 value installed) plus another 6 disc CD magazine (about $50.00). So that's another $600.00 I got back from my MSRP basically since these were accessories I may have gotten down the road anyways. Also, while at the dealership for service or whatever, you get free refreshments, newspaper, office space to work, etc. So the convenience and attention you get from the staff definitely has value over time.
The bottom line.... the price you saved becomes a wash over a short period. BTW, I also got indefinite free oil changes, which is something you definitely cannot negotiate when not dealing direct with the dealership. Have fun w/ your new vehicle. Be sure to check it bumper to bumper before taking delivery. We have the same color:) |

Any you folks read the Edmund's 'Ask A Dealer ' or 'Internet Shopping vs Traditional' fora??
I got ridden HARD for suggesting that MDXs are no longer selling "for MSRP". Some of the posters there went so far to say that "what I paid for my new car" is one the most common lies...
Anyhow congrats SunDevil, enjoy the MDX. I am glad to hear the deal went smoothly. I wish I could say the same for my shopping experience... |

To those who have purchased out-of-state:
How does this affect your status at the local dealership in terms of service? Aceman75 alluded to building a relationship with the local dealer by purchasing from them, which can be important. But does your official status in terms of loaners for service visits, etc. change if you haven't purchased from the local dealer?
Ann Arbor Acura states on their website that they have loaners for $15/day if vehicle purchased from them, or $30 if not purchased from them, with the rental waived for:
" -To have a major service interval performed (i.e. 15,000 mile increment).
-Returning for a special order part.
-Warranty work that requires more than three hours of labor time to complete"
In practice, are any of you paying for service loaners? (Most "luxury" level dealers I'm aware of have free loaners, at least for all warranty service.) Is the above policy consistent with dealers around the country? Is this national Acura policy or local dealer policy? Are there other ways your local dealer could "screw" you if you purchase at discount from afar? Anybody here deal w/ Ann Arbor Acura (I have looked at the ratings, just trying to stimulate a response).
Thanks for all replies - great forum! |

Yes,
eman01 makes an important point I forgot to mention (see my thread above). When it comes to free loaner cars, the dealership you do business with will ensure you have a (Acura) car to drive away with when your MDX is being serviced. It probably won't be an MDX since most of the dealerships cannot stock one due to demand, but it still will be a quality Acura vehicle.
If you get one out of state, you will not have this type of service available. Even though you may have an appointment setup, they will either charge you or at best may get a loaner car that's a very undesirable one (non-Acura compact car) from their used car lot. This gets back to the "business relationship" you develop with your dealership. In fact, last week I went to my dealership again (Acura of Lynnwood) to pick up my license plates, I ran into the Sales Manager and one of the Service Advisors. Believe it or not, they both remembered my name and addressed me as such. They asked how things are going and that they're here to help and serve my needs. Talk about recognition! The service advisor even went further to offer installation of the plates with a car wash (which I declined). I know that a lot of users on this web site have had so-so experiences with their dealerships. But I'm telling your that this kind of recognition and attention I value greatly. Never in my experiences with dealerships have I ever received this kind of customer service. They have already proven to me they actually care after the sale.
I also forgot to mention that Acura of Lynnwood did receive some prestigous award last year for their dedication to quality customer service (similar to a Malcolm Baldridge award). Plus, buying locally does support your community.
Hope this information helps make an informed decision for newbie Acura buyers! |

When I was shopping around for my MDX I went to Ann Arbor Acura and drove two different X's. I thought I might buy from them but they didn't seem too interested in dealing off sticker. So I went to my hometown dealership, Dave White Acura in Toledo, the rest is history. Chris, the assistant sales manager, was great to work with and most of the hard negotiations were done over the internet. I saved quite a bit under MSRP(3k) and so far I've been extremely happy. There is no "premium" model--I presume you mean the base model (I think they called it premium in 01 or 02). MSRP on the base is $36200. Invoice appears to be $32661.82 based on my research. (Both inclusive of the $500 destination charge). |

aceman75:
Thanks for reply. Do you know if Acura provides for a free loaner if you need warranty service? Or is it the dealer's choice and they can charge you if they want? |
|
|
| aceman75 |
No problem eman01,
The Acura service dept. do issue free loaners for warranty service as long as the job is 2 hours or more. However, if your job is only one hour and they're behind schedule for some reason when you come in for your scheduled appointment, they will give you a loaner car too (yes, a qualtiy Acura vehicle) if they're over 1 hour behind schedule.
This is my understanding at my local dealership. I'm sure in some geographical areas, this could vary. When buying your MDX, clarify this with the sales staff you're working with. Good luck:) |

Hi Adc:

The San Antonio Gunn Acura quoted $33999. I think so far the best (official) deal is David Mcdavid Acura of $33850.

In two hours we finished the whole process, ride my new X for the very first time on the final test. My sales person is Roderick, he is honest and sincerely, no game at all. We are very happy with the experience

adc, I bought my X about a month ago at David McDavid Plano and
we got it for $33800. I'm sure you can do better if you wait till the
end of the month. The sales person that deal with us was pretty
nice and he is the internet sales manager (Murali). We exchanged
emails couple of times and made the purchase after two test
drive.
Good luck

Hi Alphaforcex,
Thanks for the reply.
I went to David Mcdavid 3 days ago and test-drive with Murali as well.
I think I will go down to test drive again sometime this week or next as I have forgotten some features...
I have the idea that Navi system (GPS) is good for those who frequent out of town or make road trips/vacation often (maybe I'm wrong ? what other good uses in this case ? )
Do you have LoJack on the car (for theft prevention) ?
Thanks.

No, I didn't get the lojack system. I thought the same
thing on the GPS thing (I already have a portable GPS
system so I was not considering it in the first place) but
found out from the forum that you can just say "Target"
and the navi will plot the route to the nearest Target.
But navi is only available to touring package.

It doesn't seem as if the break has hit the New York Metropolitan area, dealer are still going for over MSRP, at least MSRP, and if lucky $500 off. |

What he said.
When we were at our dealership last weekend for an oil change, we heard the salesman telling a cusotmer buying an mdx is was a two month wait. I heard Honda is getting ready to open a new plant b/c they currently build the pilot, mdx and oddesy in the same plant, which prevents high output for all three cars. |

My $1250 under MSRP and at-cost accessories that I paid last December for my 03 order, was not too bad for the Bay Area. I found all the dealers here to be arrogant and actually cut the deal with a salesman from another of the dealership "holding company" dealers two doors down. If I factor in the shipping from out of state and that we are now about 60% through the 03 model year, not too bad a deal. It's important to keep in mind that in the cruel world of re-sale/depreciation, the market cares not whether you bought the car the month it came out or the month before the new year model. When you go to sell or trade, It's still a year old car, granted with lower mileage if you bought year end.
If it were me, unless I could get the great deal you see in Texas, I would hold off for an 04 model. I pointed out in a previous post, that the thing that gets the dealers cocky is that they have a short average "days to turn" on the vehicles, compared to other makes. The Wall Street Journal in an article showed it as about 10 days for the MDX if I recall, whereas Ford and other domestics are as high as 180 days. Just think of the power of the consumer if people would WALK when told MSRP. If everybody held off just 45 days on buying their car, the cars would be coming out of the dealer's ears.
The upshot is that they get MSRP because they can. That could easily be changed. |

Brand new to this board (signed up 10 minutes ago). Just recently in the market for an SUV. I live in San Antonio about 15 minutes from Gunn Acura. Was on my way home from Krispy Kreme this morning (Sunday) when the wife and I decided to check out the X at Gunn. Had about 10 of them on the lot. All had a set price on them. I only paid attention the the The touring with NAV which was $38,299. Looks like that is $300 more then they quoted the originator of this thread but from what I have read so far, still a pretty good price. If anyone has any doubts about the validity of their pricing, I can swing by and take some pix of the cars with the prices on them.

Hi Raj,
Appreciate your offer of help !
I read in the post that the base model was quoted for 32999, but when I was quoted by the internet sales manager for 33999, do you remember the price ?

32999? I don't think that's reasonable because it is less
than $400 or about 1 percent over invoice!! That would
be a killer deal if you can get one at that price.

Was at Gunn Acura yesterday. Really liked the dealership. Salesman were very nice, no pressure. They are discounting all X's $2701.
Sale Prices:
Base 33499
Touring 36099
Touring with Res 37599
Touring with Nav 38299
Touring Nav/Res 39799
The rumours about $3000 off sticker were true but those days are over. They had done that for a short time to reduce their inventory (at one point they had over 20 X's in stock).
As a side note I got a chance to check out the NAV. Unbelievable when compared to my 2002 BMW NAV!!! |

I am fairly new to this board. Just ordered my X the base model from Gunn Acura and got $2701 of the MSRP and am waiting for the paper work to come in. They will use EZHauling to ship it to me. I got Gunn Acura dealer info from this board. Doug Trahan is the sales person I contacted. He seems a very nice person to deal with. In the meantime, I never have a car moved before. Does anyone have any experince in dealing with the mover? I appreciate it very much if someone can share that with me.
Thanks! |

I had a used car moved by truck once. $750 from NC to NY IIRC.
Truck driver inspected the car at pickup, and marked little dings and scratches. The next day, I met him on the street, and he off-loaded the car. Everything was hunky dory, and very easy.
I chose the particular company because they specialize in moving Ferraris. |

Hey Guys,
I contacted Doug and I can confirm that he is selling them all for $2701 off MSRP currently. If you live in the NE (NYC here) then it is a phenomenal deal EVEN if you take into account the shipping! I am not buying one from him though as he will not have the one I want for over a month (I think that is what he said...I want B/B Touring w/NAV & RES). I got some leads on some that are available now, I will let you know how it goes! Doug seemed very pleasant though....probably a good way to go if he has what you are looking for (or if you are willing to settle for the ones he has).
BRAVO 1/5
PS - Hey, thanks again to all of you for your advice since I joined the board a few days ago...hopefully I will be a proud member of the MDX owners family soon! :D |

| Be wary of those "low Ball" quotes. The MDX is still in demand, and dealerships in the SF bay area are still holding close to the MSRP. The added running boards, stuff like that are getting thrown in now. |

| Really its 2701 off across the board for MDX's that are in stock. The way that Gunn does business, they have the prices posted on the cars, no negotiating everyone pays the same price unless you want one that has to be traded for. Prices fluctuate based on demand and availability. They access the priceing and the market on a bi-weekly basis. If you like to negotiate it wont be your cup of tea. |

At Gunn Acura, they seemed not to install any options unless you want them to.
