Painted mudguards DIY. Yes, I know I have painted mud guards but when I was in my garage, I was checking them out throughly. It seems to be soooooo easy to do, I'm not sure if you can do it yourself in the backyard.
Here are what you need:
-Spray paint and clear coat (if you can get it from the dealer)
-Phillip screw driver
Here are the instructions (not sure if they works)
-jack up the car
-take the wheels off (if you think it's better for you)
-take the mud guards off (duh~)
-grab some old news paper and put them on the ground in your backyard
-put the mud guards on the news paper and face the side you want to paint
-start spraying it
-when the paint dried spray the clear coat on the mud guards
-when the clear coat dried, install the mud guards on the car
Do you guys think this is possible? Oh, and btw if the don't spray them in your backyard and wanted the spray them in the garage because you think it's too sunny, open your garage door to give some ventilation. |

Your instructions appear to be "easier said than done." Please remember that the mudguards are made of plastic and will flex. As I recall from other threads, a flex-addititive must be added to the spray paint to help the paint adhere to the mudguard better. That being said, even if the mudguard flexes a little under normal usage, you may find yourself in for some paint chipping or peeling. Just thought you might like to know.:4: |

I've never tried it myself but I know from the comments on the CL and TL boards it doesn't always work too well. If you try it and it works let us know. |

Couple of comments:
** Most important part of painting IMHO is the prep work. If I were going to paint mud guards, I would start with new ones. New ones don't have the problems with wax (silicone is a devil when painting), tar, oil, etc.
** Flex agent has nothing to do with bonding (see above), it keeps the paint from cracking when "flexed". Thus, it is used on "bumper covers", etc.
** I don't think you'll find X paint colors in pre-loaded spray cans with flex agent added. Some automotive paint stores will load paint into spray cans for you if this is what you want.
If you are not experienced with this, I would suggest ordering them from Tim already painted (just my opinion). Good luck!! |

Regarding your running boards:
** Painting them yourself is more promising than the mud guards.
** You "mask off" areas you don't want to paint with masking tape, not duct tape. Ergo, masking in the name.
** Given the above, I am thinking that you are not an experienced painter.
** Since you are not experienced, I would suggest that you contact someone who is.
Now, if it were me, I would want to powder coat the steps. Now there is a finish that will stand up to the abuse that the steps are going to get. I believe that others have done this ... you might want to check it out. |
