Startup "clunk" - Click HERE for Original Thread

Lately, when I turn my 02 MDX on, I get this loud "clunk" coming from the front of the car as if something is "engaging" or was locked up.

It typically happens more or is louder when I have not turned the vehicle on for about a week (which is not that often).

I am concerned that somethign is being eaten up or not working properly.

If someone needs more details as to the issue, please let me know and I will try to elaborate.

Thanks

Richard

thanks for the search link, however, most of those cover the clicking sounds coming from the braking system (which is a seperate issue and one that I am aware of and that I suffer from as well).

This is coming from the front of the car in the engine compartment when the car is turned on. Its as if something is not catching correctly and it clunks to get into place. Very scary sound.

Turn the climate control off before shutting down the car next time and let us know if the sound goes away. It's probably the AC compressor.

Like Worm said it could be the A/C or even the trans engaging.

You know guys...I heard this one afternoon also and inquired with the ASE technician at the dealer and he has confirmed with me that it is the AC Compressor.

I wonder if there is a way for us to alluviate the loud noise. It is a normal noise but its REALLY loud.

I've experienced the brake clunk, shosh, ect, but I have NOT encounted a 'startup clunk'. If this is indeed the AC compressor, then it is NOT normal. I'd get it check out...

I doubt it is the compressor. I had my encounter during winter. Yea, the controls are quirky, you can have A/C on when you think it should not be on... but thats a different story.

Still, this infamous klunk is at low speed, maybe brake related, maybe transmission, it may not be harmful, but it aint pretty, not on a new car!

i have had the same problem and it just started happening on my car also (02 premium) definately not the ac because i always shut it off before i turn off the car. anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

.......is most certainly the A/C compressor engaging. I used to hear it EVERY SINGLE TIME I started the car. Now that I turn off the Climate control on startup I don't hear it anymore.

thanks everyone for your input. I will attempt to check with the A/C off tomorrow and get back with results.

I agree that the clunk is most likely the A/C clutch engaging. I leave my A/C on year-round, and notice it now and then in my carport where there's a wall to reflect the sound, but otherwise I seldom notice it. This may be because I always have the sound system on, although the sound level is medium-to-low.

Most A/C clutches are metal-to-metal; if the car sits for several days without running, there might be rust buildup which would make for more noise.

I did not get any clunk sound on my '03 X until my vehicle reached around a little over 7000 miles. I hope it's not serious.

I think I get it when I backup the vehicle.

I had the similar problem with my Accord also. But I never had any problems with it and it lasted about 160K before I sold it. I hope it not different.

when I first start the car and then apply the brakes. Its not the AC on my X since its always off before I turn the car off. Its coming from the brakes!:3:

polaris, the brake thunk is now well known, heck, it is infamous. You should expereince it each time you change direction on the first application of the brakes.

We did get ours "de-thunked" by the dealer. They installed shims to eliminate the brakes moving and "sudden deceleration". Eliminate the play = eliminate the ability to move = eliminate the movement and there is no thunk.
