Remember that quality in the first 90 days (which is what this particular survey measured) means little. It's the longer term surveys that are a far more accurate judge of quality and reliability. J.D. Powers has so many surveys these days that you have to be REALLY bad not to be able to win one of them... They have lost much of their impact and importance for that reason.

I have had Hondas/Acuras, since 1998! In five years I have taken my accord for repairs once (iddle switch) and my 01 MDX once for a rear a/c fan not working.

I call that them reliable...:1:

In almost 11 months and about 14000 miles mine has not been to the Acura service department yet. Had the maintenance done at a Honda dealer.

As pointed out in other posts here, the JD Power survey released was for 90-days of ownership, of 2003 models. JD Power has other surveys for longer term ownership.

The Consumer Reports numbers discussed recently were for three-year old vehicles (model year 2000). That is going to make the numbers different right away. I'm sure there are some differences in how JD Power measures vs. Consumer Reports. And obviously manufacturer quality can vary from model year to model year. But the most eye-opening stats may be how reliable the vehicles are over time.

E.g. in Consumer Reports' study of vehicle reliability over 8 years, the domestic brands had 21 problems per 100 vehicles after one year, above the 14/100 for the Asian brands. However, by year three, the domestic brands jump to 62/100 while the Asian brands go to 36/100. Year 7, domestic brands are 108/100 while Asian brands are 58/100.

The CR numbers for Acura and the brands in general are in this thread:
