VTM-4 Fluid Capacity - Click HERE for Original Thread

The dealers in my area want approximately $150 for an oil and vtm fluid change. I've already changed the oil (mobil 1 synthetic) but can't where it says the differntial fluid capacity. Any help would be appreciated?

Thanks
rkrans,

2.8 qts and it is easy to change.

Here is what you need:
1). Fill/Drain washers (#94109-20000 - $0.35 each from Tim).

2). A gallon of VTM-4 fluid. My local dealers only carry it in gallon size for $23.33. (Not sure if Qt. Bottle exists)

3). An Oil spout/pump. I bought ¡§Spill Saver Trans-Gear Oil On/Off Filler¡¨ from PepBoys ($5.99). It¡¦s a twist on spout with clear soft extension filler.

I did lower the spare tire for easy access to filler plug.
$150 is too high for me. I finished it in 30 minutes ( 20 minutes should be enough if I do it again.)

I purchased the fluid and washers for approximately $30.00.
Then I noticed the diff fluid bolts. What kind and size of socket do I need. Thanks so much.

Is there a seperate plug to drain the fluid and another to fill it up? Does the fluid drain out like motor oil? Do you need to pump in the fluid or do you just poor it in? How do you know when it is full? Any additional information is appreciated.

rkrans,

3/8” drive ratchet without socket ( it’s square ) and an extension.

hcmdx,

Yes, there are 2 plugs ( filler and drain ).
1. Open the drain plug and drain the fluid ( like engine oil ).
2. Close the drain plug with a NEW washer. ( I don’t remember the torque amount, have to check the service menu. I'll check it for you if you need it. )
3. While MDX is on ground level, pull VTM-4 fluid into the filler plug till the fluid runs out.
4. Put filler plug back with a NEW washer.

Thanks for the good info. Does the manual require a certain torque or do I just need to get it fairly tight?
I had my frist VTM Diff Fluid Change done at the Acrua Dealer today.
J#1 02ACZ Labor $22.56
J#1 08200-9003 Fluid, Differen $19.44
J#1 Supplies/Envirnmental $1.56
Florida Tax $2.61
Total $45.87

I may look under and decide if I want to try the next one.
The Mechanic left a note saying to use Honda Oil Filter.

I also go my new recalled Passenger Seat Harness replaced.
The dealer knew of no fix for the leaking rear view mirrors.
The dealer had nothing to calibrate the outside temperature gauge to. I will have to do it myself.
I paid $150 for mine as well, but it was for a "7500 mile service".

Is that what the majority of folks paid for their 7500 mi svc?

hcmdx,

It's 35 lbt-ft.
7,500 miles rolled around and I changed my VTM-4 fluid...

I noticed a price in these posts from $19+ per gallon, I paid $27+ at Clair Acura in Walpole, MA. They also got $1.75 for the silly little 35 cent washer. The fluid I drained out looked as clear and red and viscous as the stuff I put in. I wonder just how critical those fluid changes really are...

Hmmm. *Looks* like auto tranny fluid. *Smells* like auto tranny fluid. Any petro-chem guys out there that want to take a crack at it? Nothing a few physical tests and a GC profile won't clear up. The bottle says "distributed by Honda", wonder who makes it? Must be one of the major lubrication companies.

Not that I really have a problem with a few bucks one way or another, but I just hate the feeling that I'm on the hook for this without really knowing a little more about it. Actually, I enjoyed getting under there for the first look around.

The car can be as ULEV as you like, but if it makes you unnecessarily throw out all kinds of mysterious used fluids, then doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?
Since the VTM-4 drive system was designed by Borg-Warner, I suspect that they might be able to cast a light on the fluids heritage.

I had checked out the B-W site, and all I found was the piece about how ATF will last in excess of 100,000 miles. That's what got me going on this. I never changed ATF in my life unless I had a problem, and we're talking big old American boats with 180,000 miles om the clock.

The fluid change schedule for the transmission is another puzzler; they want it changed at 45k, then every 30k after that. Maybe special "break-in" fluid in there, too?

Since the warrantee is at stake, I plan on doing them for the next four years, though.

I just bought a gal of VTM fluid at Palm Beach Acura for $22.00 and .52 for washers. From the sounds of what some people are paying, there are some dealer ripoffs out there.
