Hey Guys,
After having the MDX for 3 weeks now and having the towing package put on. Is it normal that first gear winds so high without giving it too much gas, just accelerating like normal?
It seems that my first gear goes to about 3.5 or 4 on the tach.

Thanks

Yeah- the '03 (and probably the earlier years) shifts to 2nd at 4K until the engine warms up, then shifts at about 3K or so. If you have a heavy foot, you'll rev it to 4K+ in first, and just suck down gas.

Look at your new MDX from different angles- does it look like a baby rhino, or what? Baby rhinos are hard to get moving, but once they get going, don't stand in their way.

May be normal if it only does it while warming up.

I'm not trying to open a can of worms, but in my experience, Honda Tranny's are not as smooth shifting as the Nissan's and Toyota's I've driven in the past. It just takes getting some used to, and then it's not as noticeable.

The high shift-point in 1st bothered me the first couple days, now I intuitively feather the accelerator and the tach never goes beyond 3000 in normal driving.

I think the MDX is one of the smoothest shifters I've owned, including Lexi and Toyotuses. I especially like the shifts form 5th to 4th and 3rd on parkways at 65-70: I have to look at the tach to realize it has shifted. YMMV.

I think Honda/Acura transmissions feel different because of the "grade lodgic" mapping. I'm used to it now but I remember driving one for the first time thinking the transmission was screwed up.

Doesn't the MDX have a short first gear and a long 5th?

If I remember, First is lower than 4.3 to 1, and Fifth is higher than .6 to 1 OD .

But when you do that, you miss the BEST part of that wonderfull revving engine sound -- you know, "purrs like a kitten, YOWLS like a cat!":18:

I agree, the best part of any Honda/Acura is the engine, especially at hight revs. Mine's not near being broken in but when it is no more feathering the throttle.
