Has any of you MDX owners out there notice the side airbag light coming on once in a while when you're driving? Yesterday my side airbag light came on during my drive on the freeway. I called the dealer and he said it was quite normal for this to happen just as long as it doesn't stay on. He said that it was probably due to the fact that I was leaning on the door.

| I have had the same thing happen to me. The light goes on for a short time and then goes off. |

| if you have things on the passenger seat, these will be detected by the MDS as a "diminutive passenger," and light the warning light to notify the driver that the airbags are de-powered. Perhaps this also occurs when the driver shifts around (I noticed it occurs when my front seat passenger shifts around). |

This is definitely normal for an "occupied" passenger seat. Especially when a person moves around. Also can occur when stuff is in the passenger seat.
However I do not think this should happen when no one or nothing is in the passenger seat.
Not sure about the driver seat? I do not recall reading about the driver side having a sensor like the passenger side does. I know that the passenger seat back does NOT heat up when the seat warmers are in use due to the sensing equipment in the passenger seat back. The drivers seat back DOES warm up which suggests to me it does not have the sensors in it.
Bottom line: Normal for occupied passenger seat. Not normal for diver side or unoccupied passenger side. |

The driver's seat does not have sensors, only the passengers.
I've found that my briefcase on the passenger seat is enough to trigger the warning light. Yes, I do lug too much stuff around in it, but the seat sensors are pretty sensitive, a couple pounds does it. |

| Same thing... no problem... when driving with my wife in passenger seat, is she "slouches to rest, it will come on... apparently supposed to do so! |

We have less than 400 miles on our SS TN :D when I noticed the side airbag light glowing brightly. We had driven about 40 miles to Yountville, Ca for dinner. The MDX was parked for about 2 hours before we drove home and noticed the light. The car had cooled from about 70 degrees inside to about 50 degrees while we were eating dinner.
We returned from dinner and started driving home when the light came on - I immediately called the dealer to complain (why not - nobody else will answer a call at 9:30PM Saturday evening). He happened to have the service manager nearby - who told me the light was an indication of improper seating position and that the side airbag will not deploy when the light was lighted. I spent a few minutes discussing my disatisfaction... which seemed to be enough time for the interior to warm to about 70 degrees and the light stopped cycling and remained off. I told the service manager about the state of the light (off) - and got a response --- "thats normal". I told them about my concern and he did the normal process of downplaying the situation. I told him I would be bringing the car in if it happened again.
The light was off and never came back on again this evening. I'm not sure if I should spend any time taking the car to Acura. I know that if I take it in to Acura - the service rep will give me the usual; "sure the light came on" routine.
Anyway - I think the problem is related to temperature and am still unsure about the real meaning of the indicator.

The owners manual explains the purpose of the indicator light and some of the coniditions it will come on under.
Unlike many of the other warning lights, this light is more of an informational one letting you know that the side airbag won't deploy as the sensor believes the deployment path is blocked (e.g. somebody leaning to far to the right, against the door, etc.).

phew!!!! THANK GOD FOR THIS BOARD!!!!! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!!! :D
same thing happened to me this morning to my GiGi (4 days, 180 miles old)! yellow 'side airbag' appeared as i was parked at the street and my wife was just about to get out... freaked me a bit! ;) immediatelly, i shut down the engine and started it back - all went back to normal, but i was still worried/concerned as i am on a constant 'lookout' for tears/thuds/cracks/nicks/you name it...
boy, am i glad i used the 'Search' bf i started another endless thread... freaking out 'newbies'! :)
the light isn't a big problem, as long as it means that the side airbag is temporary disabled - i was more worried that it would deploy without need!

One way to trigger the light is to have your passenger sit straight up and not rely on the seatback . We were running around Sunday night, looking for a neighbor's lost schnauzer and my daughter triggered the light while sitting slightly more forward than the seatback. The sensor is in the center of the seat (I believe) and I noticed it glowed for most of that trip while she was sitting forward...looking for furry grey streaks in the night.
((We found the neighbor's dog BTW...at night...running scared in a canyon. No coyote snack that night. Lucky dog & owners. She drives a Cadillac Esplanade...but the MDX is a better 'hunter' :) )) |

Happened to me tonight with my gym bag in the front passenger's seat. The light went out after I placed the bag on the floor. |

| Maybe it doesn't need to be said, but if the passenger is *large* enough, side the airbag lamp will remain illuminated. I have a buddy who has demonstrated this for me while riding shotgun. |

No, I mean he sits in the passenger sear with the shotgun.
