Is 'Ultra Dawn' OK to use for washing? - Click HERE for Original Thread

My local (Toronto) Costco store sells Ultra Dawn dishwashing liquid. I believe it said original scent on it, but I'm not sure.

Does anybody know if Ultra Dawn is OK to use, or must I search for the regular Dawn product?

Only use it to strip off all wax, oils and grease prior to poliching or waxing. Do not use it on a regular basis.

I third the motion. I used Dawn (blue/original scent, yes)(ultra, not sure) only prior to the first claybar use and application of Zaino (as recommended). After that, most likely never again.

Right from the Procter and Gamble web site:

Ok to wash car?

Question
Can I wash my car with dishwashing detergent?

Answer
Your car surface and the dirt that gets on it are a lot different from the food soils and dishes that dishwashing liquids clean effectively. We don't recommend them for cleaning your car.

It's been a whole winter now, and time to get back to zaino!!!! I did dawn and clay bar to begin with, do I do dawn and claybar again this time, or do i skip the dawn? All opinions gratefully received!

I just used it last weekend (wife bought it) before using claybar. I used it sparingly because I think it's stronger than regular Dawn. I actually emptied half of the bucket and added more water because it was more sudsy. No harm done as far as I can tell.

This allowed me to put the BSM and apply Klasse AIO, clearcoat. I will put the front wind deflector tonight. Then, the chrome side steps from Tim.

Does anybody know if I can apply Klasse AIO on the chrome side-steps? I used it on my wheels. I think you can do that using Zaino.

thanks

If you have a lot of surface contaminates that polishing won't remove then doing the claybar is your best bet. After polishing can you run your hand over a flat surface and feel grit or imperfections in the surface? If so, the claybar can probably remove these. However, It should only be necessary to use the claybar once a year.

If you already have Zaino on your car now, you don't need to use Dawn. You don't need to use Dawn unless you have some oil or other contaminant that won't come off with regular car wash solution.

Well, the surface is sure different. What if you are camping off road? Some of the dirt is probably not that different on THOSE dishes. Hahaha!
It's funny, they did not even mention it removes wax, which is the main reason you DO use it! To 'prepare' the car surface, you will not continue to wash it with Dawn (or equivalents) for maintenance.

Stuck on food vs. droppings from trees or birds, etc. oh well!

Then, if I'm going to be using something like Meguiar's Gold Class Liquid wax on an ongoing basis, after the first application of it, I can simply wash with regular car wash liguid (the stuff that doesn't remove the wax) and wax on top of the existing wax?

I was under the impression I'd have to use Dawn before each re-waxing.

DAWN is to prepare the surface BEFORE the FIRST application of wax or polish, ONLY!

Rewaxing? Do you want to strip off the old wax? Then use Dawn!

Nope, just use your regular car wash solution.

There is even some debate about how well Dawn removes a polymer like Zaino. It certainly removes pure waxes but I've used it over Zaino and I can still tell there is good beading action indicating that there is still Zaino present. It's still not a bad idea to use Dawn to remove any grease and oil before polishing with Zaino. I occasionally get VinylX, 303 or tire dressing spray on my body panels so I use Dawn to clean it off before polishing.

I think everyone is missing the point of ablatt's question. He is not asking if it is OK to use Dawn, he is questioning the use of "Ultra Dawn"

I had the same concern when I bought my Dawn last year. After checking with numerous stores I came to the conclusion the "Ultra Dawn" is the only regular type "Dawn" to be found.

Just checked my bottle of Ultra Dawn and it also said it was original scent.

Thanks Bald Eagle. That was part of my question. It looks to me like Proctor & Gamble only sells Dawn under the name of Ultra Dawn now. And as long as it is original scent it is probably the same as the original Dawn.

The other part of my question was whether I should ever use Dawn IN BETWEEN waxing and it looks like people here have said not to bother.

Not to bother?

We said if you want to REMOVE your wax, use it.
If you don't, DON'T use it.

Unless you get grease, oil or silicone on your finish.

If you use Zaino polish, use Z7 (Zaino) car wash between waxing.

Use dawn once to strip off any way. After that, put a coat of wax on right away and only wash with a soap that is made for cars. If you want to wash with dawn once a year to strip off the wax then go for it but remember you need to wax straight away after using dawn. Plain and simple.

Hi,

Thanks for contacting Dawn!

The Dawn and the new Ultra Dawn are basically the same product, but one is more concentrated. I am a little confused because the non concentrated Dawn is not available in Canada, and has never been. However, in general we do not recommend using Dawn to wash cars, as it has not been tested on car paint. I would stick to a car soap designed specifically for that use.
