I bought my MDX on April 7, 2003. I have had on two separate occasions experienced trouble starting the engine when engine is still warm. Took it to the dealer, the service department told me the fuel pump was defective because it was not manufactured to 2003 MDX specifications!

Acura is known for precision engineering and quality! How could something like this have happened? My dealer (Los Gatos Acura) told me my MDX is the first such case they have seen with fuel pump problems. I'm still trying to find out from them what exactly is wrong with the fuel pump.

Does anyone know any Quality Engineers working at Honda's Acura division? I would like to talk to their Director of Supplier Quality. Anyone who has similar experience please post replies!
Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your MDX.

I've not heard of MDX's having fuel pump problems, though I may have missed one already posted on this system. Unfortunately you might have been unlucky enough to get one with a problem. Doesn't make it any better for you, but every manufacturer produces a few bad ones, sadly.

If you want to see serious fuel pump problems, check a Mercedes-Benz board. Darn first-generation pumps on the ML (over two model years' worth) have been failing for years, sometimes stranding their owners. Even the second-generation ones may not have all the kinks out yet.

The MB excuse was that the European design was affected by the dirty gas in the underground tanks of U.S. stations. Never mind that MB has sold vehicles in the U.S. for years and every manufacturer has to deal with the "bad gas." The ML is even made in the U.S. Rather poor excuse.

Hopefully your replacement pump will fix the problem once and for all. Let us know how it turns out.

What is any qaulity engineer going to tell you except your fuel pump was part of the projected failure rate?

The "Service Department" sounds like they are Bull$hi***** you in a mighty large way.

Is there a TSB out on the fuel pump? How can they say it's not manufactured to "...2003 MDX specifications..." and then turn around and say "...my (your) MDX is the first such case they have seen with fuel pump problems..."?

Interesting...VERY interesting...

The simple fact is:

TOO MANY DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEES LOVE TO MAKE UP STORIES!!

Rather they saying "we don't know why it broke" {and expose their own lack of time to diagnose problems, lack of technical depth, or simple desire to move onto to the next customer) TOO OFTEN the folks at dealerships MAKE UP A STORY.

I don't thing they do it "maliciously", in that they are trying to hoodwink customers, they just feel that "something" is going to make the customer happier than a shrug & "it could've been anything".

Heck, look at the Space Shuttle disaster. Do you really expect a big "committee" to figure out EXACTLY what went wrong? No, they will just focus on the MOST PROBABLY thing. Now no Acura dealer can afford a big fact finding committee for a fuel pump failure, so the service writer is gonna TRY and come up with something plausible, but in THIS case they spout off something that REALLY falls apart under scrutiny.

This SHOULD NOT HAPPEN, but in a way you can't blame the dealership, as the PROBABLY want you to feel better...

ren, LOL, you are so right! I often wondered how many mechanics have told me that my syrumpt%^*$ has been (&(&%^@L by the (&SD^(DHH and that he recommends a @(^K#L@ at the very least but if I REALLY want to solve the problem I need to have the (*&&DGDF and the *(D&DKJJJ replaced. They all sound soooooooo serious, but I often wondered if they really knew what the heck they were talking about!:D
