Dixon, IL. Not too far from Galena mileage wise but takes about an hour to get there as all 2 lane roads and no good direct route to get there from here. Do you get over from Des Moines and spend some time in Galena yourself? The area is quite nice and beautiful (for this part of the country anyway!)

I grew up in the Quad Cities and used to do a bike ride each summer that went from QC to Dubuque via Galena. Some very steep hills!!

I've been in Dixon a few times too. Had lunch on the river once. A nice town. Reagan's birthplace, correct?

Dixon is considered Reagan's "hometown" as he spent most of his boyhood here. He was actually born in the (even) smaller town of Tampico a little southwest of here.

Get a herd of Afghan goats, you won't ever need to mow again. Even better than that, you will get fresh goal milk every morning to drink or eat with cereal. Goat milk is very high in protein and low in fat. I heard it also is a natural Viagra. Boy, I wish I could have a house like you. Everybody will be happy. Goat happy chowing, me happy drinking, and my baby happy ooing and aaing ....

Thanks for all the compliments!

That's all folks! I'm finally settling in, after putting almost 20K of additional fixing. New Boiler (250K Weil McClain Oil Furnace), Hot water system(80 gallon Super-Store which runs off furnace), Created 6 zones of heating, adding hot water radiator heat to basement and a Kick Heater to a Bathroom. Also had to replace gutters with the leaf-guard gutter system. Had to do some land grading on one side of the home to help with a water problem, changed basement window wells, Termite Protection, and mice protection. Seems like my condo was so much simplier to live, but crushed together with no room and had no yards. Like I said it's starting to get a little better now. It seems as if there is always something new that comes up.

Thanks - it's sort of a Mission/Arts & Crafts/Native American conglomeration. Definitely colorful!

Dale those are my orchids. I had a particularly prolific spring this year so I had to get a picture. I don't usually have that many in bloom at the same time.

laborlitigator, we save the Raider gear for the cars and of course the clothing. :18: The Raider flag goes up at the front of the house on game days. Gotta show the colors.

You need to get down here. 12 miles east of Los Banos on 152, and about 60 miles from Fresno, there is a huge orchid house...must be at least half the size of a football field. It's all inside 3 huge inflated greenhouses. Pack a lunch to see it all.

Don't have a pix of our home, but here's our weekender view. It's on the St. Johns River south of Jacksonville, FL. Absolutely gorgeous! Fishing is unbelievable. We'll be shrimping off the dock these next few weeks. You wouldn't believe how much shrimp is available. There is also plenty of blue crabs. Skiiing in the area is awesome as well. The river home is a 3/2 doublewide, perfect to beat up till the kids are out and we'll build our retirement home.

Our homestead is a 5/5 with a bonus room (that is trashed from the kids!) with 3900 sf & a 3 car garage. Never thought I'd say this, but the garage is too small. I think I could always fill up a garage no matter how big it is!

Beautiful! My wife's sister lives in the Jax area and when we visited one year we took a look at houses down there. For what you get, I'd say the prices were very reasonable. Then again, that was a few years ago.
OP MDX
Northeast Florida is Florida's best kept secret. We have tons of water (river, lakes and ocean), no state income tax, low RE taxes, low cost of living, a ton of golf courses, great weather. RE values have really ticked up over the last couple of years. Our house value has gone up $125k from the time of purchase. But, I talk to my brother who lives in the Florida panhandle, a friend in California and a friend in south Florida and can't believe how much they have to pay for RE.

They cant. Everywhere you look in the NY Metro or Fairfield country area, the prices are unreal. I dont know how people afford it.

Creative financing. Interest only loans, arms, etc. Many of these people made a fortune selling a home in this crazy market.

In LA, If I am to buy a house here, I can only afford a bathroom with a decent toilet!:D

My 15 year old house, 2250 sq ft. on a 9500 sq ft. lot is approaching $800,000 in the market and it's still going up. I just don't see how my kids will be able to afford any decent living place in LA.

LOL, neither am I! I'm talking about Emeryville! :2:

That's terrific! Who would ever have thought a 2000± SF house, non-waterfront could sell for that much.

Believe it or not, California values have an impact across the US. There are investors from California doing tax evading (legal) 1031 exchanges for RE in Florida. They look at it as a steal with these Florida values. CA investors are willing to pay more, because they have to re-invest a certain amount to avoid the taxes.

I have a friend who got an interest only on a $407000 home in Destin, July 2003. He couldn't afford it if he had a traditional loan. He has it under contract as of this week for $650000. He's now under contract for another home in another up & coming neighborhood. I think it's a great alternative for people that are willing to invest while living short-term in a home.

I guess, I may have proved your point. As I was writing this, I figured you may be talking about the average american who will live in their home for several years. They can't take the risk of an interest only.

Probably more than we could afford if we had to start from scratch now. We purchased the lot 2 years ago and since that time the prices for lots in our subdivision have doubled. Builders are buying most lots, many with interest only loans, and either building a spec home or a custom built home for someone.

Homes in our subdivision have been selling for 500K to 1.3M.

Nice way to do it. Prices are similar here in our part of the central valley for semi and custom homes. I could have picked up a custom lot for $175-200K a couple of years ago, but was not in the position to do so.
They are now $300K. So instead we are building another, cheaper and smaller home, 15 mi away.
Since there are just 2 of us, we will likely move in it, sell this one, and take the 100% appreciation ($225K to over $460K in 3 years) of this house and re-invest it. Maybe pick up some older rental property along the way. Planning on my over 55 and married capital gains exemption to come into play.

Sounds like a good plan.

With just two of us also hopefully we will have the good sense to sell this home also in a few years and get into something more appropriate. After living in a home for two years it can be sold without paying any capital gains.

2 Stories (no basement)
5 Bedrooms (used 1 of the room for a den)
3 Baths
2,800 Sq. Ft.
3 Car Garages
Fireplace (who needs a fireplace in AZ?)
House was built in 1996, bought brand new in '96

Bought the house for about $200,000 back in '96, if I want to sell it right now, I can get it easily for over $750,000.

Picture of the house will be on soon, as soon as I figure out how to upload the pictures on here. :p

Wow, it is so nice to see really nice homes, I live in the Bay Area in California, about 20 min from SF so prices of homes are out of reach for most people. This is the house we have now, I am almost ashamed to show it , but we are planning to sell soon and move out of CA and buy a house outright some where in the midwest.

In 3 years this house has made us 340K In equity, can you believe it? NUTS!

New Louisville (Oldham County) abode:

4900 SF (including finished walkout)
5 BR
4 1/2 bath
3 car garage
2 kitchens
1 yoga room
3/4 acre

All for under $500. Haven't figured out what to do with the yoga room. Move-in in two weeks.

I'm having a tough time selling my Phoenix home. I've come off my original asking price by $50K. Three offers have floundered for various reasons. Countless thousands of homes are sitting unsold in the valley. It is hard to believe that a market that appreciated 45% last year could grow so cold overnight.

I've been beating myself up recently for not being able to afford a house big enough for my growing family (2nd child due in Feb). But after reading this thread, I'm really convinced I just need to get out of LA.
We're now renting now, but we just fixed and flipped the following house:
1255 Square Feet
6747 Sq Foot Lot
2 bedroom, 1 3/4 ba
1 car garage
1 living room
1 kitchen
no basement
no h/t

Sales price: $672,000.
And yes, its next to a parking lot, worst location on the street

Wow, how time flies. I haven't been on this board in years. I came back to find the dimensions of the MDX to see if the new sofa we just bought for our new house will fit and I came across this thread.
I posted the above thread three years ago, and it seems like the only thing that hasn't changed is the MDX. In the 3.5 years since my post on the house, we have lived in 5 different houses, fllpped 1/2 dozen houses (the only way us in our 20/30's can afford houses in decent areas), moved from LA to Boston, and are expecting our third child this week. The kid in my sigx is 6 now and looks like:

We are now rennovating a brownstone in downtown Boston.
http://picasaweb.google.com/jonmary...key=eMCxPe7CAYc

Resale price is about 650/sq foot.

3.5 BA
4 Bedroom
Head house
Rec room in the basement.
3000 sq ft.
700sq ft yard.
No garage, street parking.

And the MDX is still running at 110k miles. Plan to keep it until we move somewhere with a garage..no use getting a new car to beat up in the city!

IT's good to see some old faces are still here...laborlitigator, among others!

i live in Bronx, NYC

mom bought the house Back in 2001 for $240K, easily sell for minimum $500k

4bedroom 3 bath. its a small narrow house with a big(a least for NYC lol) lot on the side. when i get some pics i will show. we are actually looking around for some other homes in the Bronx, we need more space. Taxes are about $3400, and its a great neighborhood in the Bronx

Not all places in the Bronx are bad. the only bad part of the Bronx is south Bronx.
