We're getting ready to put our house on the market (in about a week) and I need help with a mildew removal problem. Our master bath has natural travertine on the floors, counters, jacuzzi surround, and floor to ceiling in the shower (10' tall). The commercially available products for killing mildew say they're not to be used on natural stone. We use "StoneWash" from Tile Lab for general cleaning in most areas, but when we use it in the shower, the mildew comes back quickly. Have tried a weak bleach solution, but it lightened the grout somewhat and didn't solve the problem. Anyone else have this type of stone in their shower - any ideas? Help!

This may sound stupid but have you tried installing a more powerful exhaust fan? I know that in literature, they said mildew is accountable to many factor one being lack of ventilation.

When we built the house, we were aware that moisture and warm air retention in the space - 13' x 15' in total including the separate room for the toilet. We installed 2 exhaust fans that completely exchange the air in 15 minutes. Don't know what more we could do in that regard. The mildew only occurs in the shower - when the glass door is closed, there is only a 6 inch space at the top for ventilation which we guess is the problem. We've always left the door open after showering to allow the fans to work. Guess we're just looking for a chemical solution that won't harm the tile at this point.

Your real estate agent might know how to clean it, or know someone who knows.

Natural travertine sounds really nice! They used it extensively at the Getty -- beautiful!

Try www.miraclesealants.com .

We have granite in our kitchen and use their Sealant, Cleaner, Stone Polish, Disinfectant, and Poltice very successfully..

There is an application chart on the site- look for a cleaner for marble. The site also contains very helpful info on removing and preventing stains, such as mildew.

Thank you so much for the tip on Miracle Sealants. Their "Miracle Disinfectant" is exactly what I was looking for. Like Zaino, (or the Griot's products we use on the X) you can't stop at just one product, so we bought over $100 worth of the stuff. Guess what I'll be working on over Memorial Day weekend.:(

On the plus side, the travertine will be all spiffed up and the house will sell the first day! (Wishful thinking!) Thanks again!

Anytime! When you get the Disinfectant, you will be impressed by the mixing directions. The disinfectant strength goes up to "President of the United States having surgery in a jungle".

I got a $35 orbital buffer to polish off the Sealant and Stone Polish. The alternative is two or three passes with clean cotton cloths.
