My House and Trading Spaces - Click HERE for Original Thread

BlueStreak
Last fall my teenage daughter sends the TV show Trading Spaces and e-mail and says come do a room in our house. About 8 months go by and guess what - last Saturday they spent a number of hours filming my house, rooms, etc. (and my neighbors) and yesterday they called and said "you've been selected and we'd like to film in the coming weeks".

After going through a couple possible choices of rooms, they decide on my home office (den). I'm in the middle of remodeling (finishing) my basement but it's not far enough along for them to do that room.

Complicating matters is my house is 3 years old. That's right just three years old. Nice stained wood trim, wood windows, crown moldings, etc. Would I let them paint my trim yellow if they decide?

I've got papers sitting here I have to sign to seal the deal. Do I go for it and take the risk? I have no clue who the designer will be OR what they are going to do to my room. It's all a risk. It doesn't cost me anything, except in the event I don't like it and want to redo it after everyone leaves.

It's a family show so the wife and both daughters will be playing along with Dad. More for the fun, I guess.

I say go for it! Could be a real education. See if you can get your X in the background of any shots outside...:2:
jswift2000
3 years old? How much do you love the office? I would say no but then again life is short so what they hell. It may be fun...
mdxxxx
Go ahead and do it. I bet it's similar to the 'designer showcase' series me and the Ms. attend periodically. (She's got a black belt in interior decorating)

I know you don't know now, but will the designer(s) be giving you a preview, or any hint of their project before they start? Have they shown you any of their work?
BlueStreak
I have to empty the garage so the X, vette convertible, and ski boat have to come out. They don't want to risk damaging them (they say). Probably will be sitting up front in the yard.

I have no connection to what the office looks like. It's my computer and other hardware so as long as it's functional in use, I'm not sure what color the walls are is important.

They won't tell me anything about who the designer is, what they have planned, or anything related. Complete secrecy. They say this is what makes the show when you get to see what was done.

I fear destruction, but then again, when it's a 14x14 sized room, how bad can it get? They could do an awesome job and I be completely thrilled, but the opposite could also happen.

The crew they bring is impressive in numbers. They bring a LOT of people with them. I'm leaning towards saying yes, have plenty of cold Carona close by, and enjoy the thrill.

I'll admit it's an interesting/entertaining show to watch, but have you SEEN what they've done to some of those houses (especially that Hildi chick -- like hay on the walls and stuff)?!?!

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c...27/HO169339.DTL
http://katu.com/news/story.asp?id=45227

Then again, you might get Genevieve :jump3:

I'd let them into an old beater, but not a new house, that's for sure. If you've got expensive moldings, flooring, lighting, window treatments and paint, I'd pass -- as interesting as it'd be. But if you really don't care that much about the office, and are willing to (potentially) spend some time un-doing their transformation, it'd sure be a neat experience.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a fellow .org'er on tee vee :D

Cool! My wife watches the show all the time. I'll be sure to watch that episode!
Blackura
The show is a definite guilty pleasure for me. Most of the crappy looking houses seem to get grass on the walls or saran wrap ceilings. The nice upscale houses don't seem to get the trashy treatment. Since you're in a 3 year young house, I doubt they'd do anything ugly or anything you couldn't easily undo with a coat of paint.

How many people do you know that can say their house was featured on TV? Even if it was to turn out absolutely terrible, you could always sell the house as a "designer home featured on national TV" and get double the price!

It's rare opportunity. I'd cross my fingers and go for it.
renov8r
The premise of the "TLC" version of Trading Spaces seems to be "shake people out of their bland rooms for $1000 or less".

Most the designers use a basic "paint is cheap" philosophy. The quality of work is very spotty. 99% of what they 'build' is made of plywood/MDF and will last about as long as the scenery for a High School play. If you LIKE what they do, but want it to last you could use their cheap plywood as sort of "prototypes" or 'roughdrafts' of the furniture you REALLY need. I've never see the crews do anything TRULY destructive of good furniture/features/surfaces. They routinely take down ugly (but highly functional) things like "lumber yard ceiling fans". They have bitten off a few "too big" projects(like kitchen cabinet doors & fireplace remodeling) that have resulted in shoddy end-products (but the places were almost lean-to-like in their junkiness to start...). Some of the most memorable episodes have been where they have changed things that homeowners were upset about. It was about EGO though, NOT real damage. In one case a woman was apoplectic about her fireplace being 'obscured'. Her husband looked like he would pop the cameramen in the lens. The designer had actually built a plywood front all around the fireplace instead of painting the hideous BROWN thing to blend in with his airy light French country room. The room was a typical tract house from the 80's with no real style. He could've just slathered the thing with paint that would have been nearly impossible to remove, instead he DID create a truly great look & left open to door to "go back".

My personal opinion is that 95% of 'builder' houses WILL come out LOOKING better after Trading Spaces, and the 5% that don't ... well paint IS cheap!

GO FOR IT!!!
BaldEagle
Congratulations BlueStreak for being chosen for the show. Sounds like a lot of fun for you and your family.

Bet you are going to love your new pink office.

Any idea who the neighbor will be and what the remodel involves in the house you are trading with? From watching the show it looks like a lot of hard work.

Be sure and have something (sticker, etc.) about acuramdx.org in your office to give this site a plug during the show. Maybe the new office will have an acuramdx.org sign above your computer.

Hope you still get along with your neighbor that you trade with after the show is over.

Hi BlueStreak:

___My wife loves the show and I detest it … I am in the camp that believes they usually wreck the rooms they rehab vs. others (like my wife) who think they are actually making an improvement. Just expect to see your den turned into something nutty. Also consider you will more than likely be repainting and removing the rest of the hack job within a few months after they have left. Just MHO of course.

___Good Luck and please let us know when it will air.

Decision's in....and we're going for it.

Taping in two weeks; to be aired mid to late Aug (will know exact date when they get here).

I need an ACURAMDX.ORG sticker and I WILL have it so the camera will get it.

The pics below explain some of my hestitation. These pics are a couple years old but you see this is no "spec home" (although it may be considered this once I get a pink office).

:4:

Stay tuned!

___That is one nice home! Damn, I wish I lived closer to tear into that landscape!

___And I still cannot believe it! You will be the first on that show with a $750,000 + home to play with.

Beautiful house BlueStreak, you should also post the pics on the home thread...http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=11806

Your home could easily fetch $3.0m+ Here in the bay area. :4:
jswift2000
Mrs. jswift2000 just saw your house and said "Holy sh!t!!!". Instead of an acuramdx.org sticker, why dont you paint http://www.acuramdx.org on all the walls (they're going to be repainting them as well). What do your neighbors think of this?
BlueStreak
You're right....if they are going to trash it, why not do a little "decorating" before they get here? MDX pictures on the walls, vette pics on the other wall, etc.

Keeep in mind, I live in NC. Real estate is fairly priced. What you don't see is the view out the back - a nice lake.

jswift2000
a house like that in CT would be about 1.5 million, without blinking an eye!!!
renov8r
There was rumor that some of the designers DELIBERATELY try to at least work on the owners "worst nightmare" SO I would get REAL friendly with my neighbors and ONLY let 'em drop hints about what you really WANT disguised as what you FEAR ( if you get my drift..)

That is DEFINITELY not the typical tract home that the roll up to -- your GARAGE is bigger than 75% of the HOUSES they do!

Can't wait to hear the details!!!

They asked us where's a good place to do the into bit. I, being the man of the house, suggested Genevieve be the designer and she and I come riding up to the back of the house on the waverunner. (stop and visualize for a minute....):4: My wife and daughters said to skip all that and get right to Tye. Uh...no.

Our neighbors house is also very nice but their living room is painted with what I call "key lime pie green" paint. ANYTHING is an improvement over this. It's not me for sure....

We have been talking with our neighbors on what we'll take and not take. I'm counting on them to hold up their end of the deal. I threatened to paint a Harley mural on their hardwood floors or pink flamingo's on the walls and ceilings if they mess-up my office.

Leslie and I have to "move in" to our neighbor's house for a couple days during taping, so the X will probably stay here and I'll take the vette with me. No way the vette will be here unsupervised with these people....probably find someone trying to paint whitewalls on the tires! The X will make it on TV.

What did I get myself into...
BLACK-BLING-MDX
bluestreak... mind giving me ur blueprints for ur house? i LOVE the back! i'm building a new house, and that's almost exactly how i wanted the back to look like, my front will be a lil diff though... awesome house!
BlueStreak
You want some closer and more detailed pictures? When NC stops getting drenched I can take a few.

I used Andersen windows and french doors. Due to the windows going down below 18" to the floor in many areas, code requires the glass to be tempered (as opposed to standard glass). You may want to look at the cost of this before you go to far. Hate to see you work so hard on planning then have to back-off the design due to cost issues. Just something to consider. I had this house custom-built in 1999 and had to work through this myself.
TheWorm
Beautiful house...The front is nice but the back is really something!

Best of luck with the taping and the "reveal". We'll be watching your episode for sure.

And I hope you get Genevieve :D

Criminey! It hurts to look at it, it so nice! (Hurts in a good way) looks like all my furniture could fit in the garage alone.
MK23666
What is that mound of earth in the middle of the rear pic? Don't tell me you are getting ready for the designer's demise already
BlueStreak
We live on a lake and the sewer runs along the back yards since we're on a steep hill. So is's a manhole that is now planted. My lot drops 22' from front to back, which is how we could build the walk-out basement.

Taping for the show is next Tuesday. They arrive and set-up next Monday. On the designers, we read in a newspaper column odds are it will be Doug and Laurie. Of course they (show producers) aren't telling us anything officially, but these two are the leading candidates. I'm still hoping for Guenevive :4:.

To make this a real challenge, I went and burned both my hands last weekend. My right hand is the worst so I need to heal quickly or I won't be doing much of anything with it.

How'd you burn your hands...overexcited at the thought of Guenevive coming to your house?:4:

We had 4" of rain Sat and I saw water running over the gutters in places. So before I aeriated the lawn (trying to spruce-up before the TLC crew arrives) I said "lets clean the gutters". So I climbed on the ladder and as I pressed both palms on the black singles to lift myself up on one section of the roof, I had no clue the singles were this hot. Once I realized how hot the roof was and regained my balance, the damage was done. Outside temp was 75 degrees and it was 1:00pm Sunday. Direct sun which is what warmed them up I'm sure.

So I burned the palms of both hands. Left hand is just all red; right hand has two 1.5"x1.5" areas missing all the skin. Feels just lovely.
I can only help it heals fast.

So much for golfing and flying this weekend....

Ouch, and I completely understand! About 15 years ago I had just completed my daily run, and I decided to clean my gutters too. So I climbed up on the roof sat down in my nylon running shorts and burned both cheeks. I was not a happy camper for a few weeks to say the least!

In the event I don't like it, my line is already rehearsed and will go as follows:

"So with $1,000, a team of professional designers and a crew of 21+ people, this is all you could come up with? I was honestly expecting a little bit more."

I can see the reactions now :D

I can also say "Where is my Acuramdx.org poster I had on the wall?"

If my memory is correct (sometimes suspect) today is the day the Trading Spaces crew arrives at BlueStreak's home to begin his office renovation.

Best of wishes BlueStreak for this project. Hope things go well for you and your family.

Post photos when you can get to your computer after this is over. (Thursday ?) That is if you can ever get your computer to work again after all the destruction, er, I mean construction. I just watched a show this weekend where they knocked over a piano.

I hope you get Laurie, she is my favorite.

It all starts tomorrow @ noon. Home was inspected today and we found out the designers - Vern and Edward. And sorry, no Page either. And the carpenter is going to be some dude named Carter. Vern will do our place.

I'm taking my laptop and my neighbor has road runner, so I know how to connect it there and I may post with a pic or two if time permits. Today they said to expect full days, so I don't know what I can do.

I have before pictures and the digital camera is ready to roll for the after pics.

They did a house is Cary, NC couple days ago and it rained almost constantly. Weather now is 90 and sun, so you can't ask for anything better. Vette is clean, ski boat is ready, and I'll start the waverunner just in case they decide to go play in the heat. And of course the X is clean as it has to launch both toys.

I'm trying several ways to get the forum some exposure. Screen saver, wall paper, etc. We'll see if it survives the editing. I wish I had a forum ball cap. I'd wear that along with my Billy teeth at the opening so I KNOW that would make it.

Wish me luck. My neighbor STOCKED his refrig with all the beer I can handle so I can drown my sorrows of no Page or Guenevive and have fun.

I'm outta here....

I don't think we will hear from BlueStreak till tomorrow when all this is over. They usually have homework for the homeowners that involves late night work on their neighbors remodel.

Like other's have mentioned, the Streak is lucky to have Vern in charge of his office redo. Vern usually winds up with a very appealing remodel IMHO. Although a few of the others are much better to look at if it was me I would choose Vern for the ideas he comes up with.

I predict BlueStreak will be very happy with the final results.

Hey I got some juicy behind the scene secrets. My wife is a producer for the news wont disclose which one, and she interview two of the stars a designer and one of the carpenters( wont say who either). Well 2 tidbits are that Vern and Doug hate each others guts. They are rarely pair in shows. But if they are they dont talk to each other. AND!!!! !! Amy Wynn has a helper who does MOST of the carpentry work.... Just something to chew the fat.

We had a great time and both rooms look great. Both families were VERY pleased with the rooms and plan to keep them. The decor matches designs in the house and really do compliment what is already in place. Both designers commented they could not do the show with room designs that don’t match the rest of the house, in otherwords, trash the rooms with a wild design. I can tell you they were impressed with both houses in terms of designs and spaces. This was a step-up no question and the designers commented on it. The project before us was a 1700 sq ft house, so compare to our place.

But before I get into the details, I won’t be able to share any pictures. We’re under strict confidence not to publish nor are we allowed to have anyone take pictures before the show airs. The press has been here and everyone was told “no”. So I’d share if I could but y’all just have to wait about a month.

We started Tues with the crew arriving at 7:00am. They pulled this huge trailer down the driveway and started setting up. Very organized crew and everyone, from producers to camera and sound guys works hard. Everyone has a “can do” attitude.

Trading Spaces Family is the show and debuts July 6th. Will run every Sunday @7:00 eastern. We will be show 5, which will air Aug 3rd. TS Family is different from regular TS since kids are involved and do work on the set. I wonder what my girls said about Mom and Dad?

Joe Farrell is the new host for the family edition. Paige can’t do all the shows so they needed another host. Vern Yip was the designer in our house and Edward Walker (lives in Raleigh) worked with us in our neighbor’s house. Carter was the “hot” carpenter, say the ladies.

On Tuesday we shot the intro bits and misc tape shots. We also reviewed the plan for the next couple days. We were not told anything about what would happen at our house or vice versa. Just schedules, timings, events, etc.

On Wed AM we did the key swap and got started. Wed was a full day. Our family worked until 11:00pm and we quit. Vern and his crew worked until 4AM here. Long day for sure! Each family did much more work than we thought. Our homework was to keep working and we did just that. Edward and the “helpers” stayed up with us as well.

Thursday morning we finished the painting, trim, upholstery work, etc. and started putting the room back together. Taped the final scenes and prepped for the reveal. The reveal is LOTS of work. Since they can’t retake, you have to know everything and can’t make mistakes.

I have learned that reality TV isn’t all reality, so remember that when you watch the show. We are, shall we say, coached, encouraged, motivated, and otherwise persuaded.

The crew behind the scenes was awesome. Lots of fun, laughed, played jokes, and after the show was finished had a couple adult beverages with us. We had a water balloon fight, threw people in the lake, etc.

The producers are PICKY about logo’s, designs, etc. so the X did not make TV. Nor did anything else I tried to get on the set. I had to change shirts twice to get rid of the logo’s to meet their approvals. So no free advertising for anyone, unfortunately.

In summary, if you get an opportunity to do this, GO FOR IT. TS gets over 300 applications a day for people wanting to be on this show. We got selected by luck I guess, or they just liked the picture of the house. It was a real treat, an incredible amount of fun, and something my kids will look back on forever.

I will try and share a few pics of the crew and the set after I download and organize.
catzx6

___Great News and I am glad to hear that you didn’t get something crazy. Please bump this thread to the top before the actual airing dates (or BaldEagle will ;)) so we can all watch your expression as well as see the makeover!

___Good Luck and Congrats.

Forgive me, but after six months on this site, I still haven't figured out what BUMP means. (Hey, it took me a month to figure out plood and bling.) So... what is bump?

Hi Blackura:

___What bump means is to post into a thread so that it rises to the top of the most recent posts (bumps the thread back to the top) instead of being buried in the thousands of other threads/posts that come after it. Nothing needs to be said for a bump but out of common courtesy you should say “Bump”. If no one “Bumps” the thread, it won’t be seen other than with a search in very short order.

___Good Luck

I'm really excited to see the show- kind of vicarious fame!

"Hey- I kind of know that guy!"

Warzau - I tried to get more details on your post but could find nothing. Per the crew and designers themselves, there is no fighting. Naturally they have different design tastes but each person asked says everyone works well together. It may be a case of they don't want to tell me about it and if that't the case, we'll never know for sure.

For the TS junkies, there is some interesting reading on this form. http://discovery.infopop.net/1/Open...04&f=6051912904 There is a TS Homeowners section as well. Some interesting posts on Hildi and her wild stuff. Man am I glad she didn't come to my house!

A pic of the host and my family.

Our designer with us getting ready to get started. We're in our neighbor's place at this point.

How ironic that you were the "blue" team.:)

The new carpenter, Carter, joins Amy and Ty. He had some following among the ladies....(why is my wife smiling so much?)
