Hi -

I hate for this to be my first post but here it goes. My husband and I were on our way home from shopping when a wheel comes bouncing down the side of the freeway and right in front of me. Well, it was wheel vs. MDX and we won, but not without damage.

Luckily, the only damage was to the right front bumper cover. It is smashed in and has a big tear so needs to be replaced. Can anyone point me in a good direction for resolving this? Should I take it to a dealer? Is it something that is fairly easy to replace? My husband is in the process of tearing apart and putting back together a 64 Mustang, so is pretty good at these kinds of things.

BTW I'm located in the SF East Bay area.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I've really enjoyed lurking until now.

Assuming the damage is limited to the cover, and it sounds like it is, then it is very simple. The bumper can be removed in maybe 1/2 hour (just a guess based on other cars). A replacement, painted, will probably run in the area of $600. (The body shop will have to paint the bare bumper). It isn't necessary to go to the dealer. Try to find a shop that's good at matching paint colors. With a bumper replacement only, the shop probably won't blend the new paint into the old paint, so the color match will be more critical. Paint on the plastic bumper has a flex additive so isn't quite the same as the paint on the metal.

Glad no one was hurt. Something like that could have caused a nasty accident.

Welcome, and glad you guys are OK slgran. Dale MDX is quite right about potential damage. Do a search on this topic and you will find another member on the board had a not so slight run in with a loose tire on a freeway back east.. He posted pictures too, damage was nasty. Anyway, welcome to the club.

Given the nature of the collision, if you have a good insurance agent, i'd ask about a claim. I don't think it would affect your premiums. I had my bumper cover replaced and some of the underlying supports in a similar problem and i believe it came to under a thousand at a local body shop, and it looks like new, as it should. good luck.

If it's under a grand, bite the bullet and pay it out of pocket. It'll save you in the long run.

Check with both your Acura and your Honda dealers -- see who they recommend for bodywork and painting. In this area, both dealers recommended the same body shop, and the shop did a superb job both in quality of fix and in paint matching.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

We certainly were lucky we weren't hurt and the damage wasn't worse. For anyone familiar with the area it happened on eastboud 580 through Pleasanton/Dublin at about 6:45 on Friday night, so we weren't really going anywhere. As much as I complain about the traffic in this area, this time it really helped :4:

Thanks again for all your help, you are a great bunch!!
