| I know there was a thread a while ago on new lawn mowers but I need some advice on lawn tractors. I'm looking at the simplicity broodmoor, John Deere LX266 or 277 or Toro Wheelhorse. I'm leaning towards the John Deere but I want to know what people think. I currently have a old (about 15 years old) 11 hp murray that was given to me last year free but its on its last leg and I need to think of my next toy. If it dies this year, i'm going to buyt the the JD LT160 (no financing until 4/04). If I can wait until next years bonus, well, I can have pick of the litter. For those of you who have lawn tractors, what do you have? All the above mentioned are 16-17hp and a 44 inch cutting deck. Thanks. |

| I was looking at those and the scags but I dont know if I can swing that kind of cash. Do those zero turns work on hills? I have some hills on my yard - i live below street level and I want to make sure they would get up the hills. |

Hi Jswift2000:
___A ZTR Rider like the Ex-Mark LazerZ series will easily cut a side angle well beyond that of any lawn tractor. Their center of gravity is truly close to the turf. With that being said, I wouldn’t cut at much over 20 degrees side to side because when a mower tips, you could easily get killed! In straight up and back, these ZTR’s could probably climb a 50 degree slope. Again, well beyond that of any rider but not an angle I would feel comfortable cutting … All I can say is that a ZTR is more like cutting with a Go-Cart. In other words, its quite a bit of fun :D

JSwift2000...
The latest issue of Consumer Reports reviews lawn mowers. I don't know if any of them suit your needs, but there's also a chart for reliability of brands you might find interesting.
Wayne (xcel) is the pro on this forum, though. I'd go with what he says.
Good mowing! |

| thanks blackura. I was hoping wayne was going to jump in and he did. I'm going to look at what he recomended and see how I do. Wayne, another question I have for you, since your the lawn expert, is how do you remove the horrible brown spots on the lawn caused by dog urine? We have a few and its killing me... |

We own one of the Kubota residential lawn mowers, and they're truly a work horse...
You really ought to look into them. |

Hi Jswift2000:
___Unfortunately, there is only one thing that will cure the brown spot problem for good … Don’t let the dog go in the same area. To fix, Urine is a type of fertilizer. The problem is when you over fertilize, you burn the grass and this is exactly what is happening with the dog mess. I would recommend that you begin watering the area to death to get rid of (dilute) the excess Nitrogen and anything else that is in urine? Do not apply any fertilizer to this area until you are back to healthy looking blue/green turf.
___On a similar topic, one of the tricks to slow release fertilizer is to sulfur coat urea in a pelletized form. You will see it labeled as SCU for short.

| If you use the link to www.drsfostersmith.com, they have some products that you can try for the brown spots. Two options are to treat the pet or treat the spot. Just do a search on their site and type in "dead grass". I used a product called gee-whiz which worked. They now have some chewable tablets for the dog which look like they might work. |

| I got a Scotts S1742 17hp. 42" cut lawn tractor around two yrs old. that I'm trying to sell. Bought it new. Well taken care of ... washed after each use. New battery, oil changed, blades needs sharpening tho. I want to get the smaller Murray 11hp 3?" cut ride mower instead for easier back and forth transportation to my rental properties. Would like 900.00 for it, paid 1600 ... price negotiable. |

| I have a Scotts 1642 which I bought 3 years ago and is has been a great mower for me. These mowers are the exact same models as the John Deere Saber brand. Great deal if somebody wants a quality "almost new" mower. Nice price! |

| Thanks... I pretty much decided on the Simplicity Broadmoor or Regent - offers traction control, free floating deck. I some nice steep hills so I think the traction control will work out well. Plus... I have to wait until my current tractor dies - a 15 year old 11HP, 36 inch Murray that seems to be on its last leg. Its a deal I worked out with the boss. Dont ask... I was being stupid. |
