I have a Silver 2002 MDX.
I bought it used about three weeks ago from the Acura dealer. It is a Acura Certified Used Car.

I don't know if it is my imagination but it looks like that the silver is blotchy towards the right rear quarter of the body. There is also an area in the left rear quarter thar looks the same way. I thought maybe it was repainted. The body doesn't look like there has been any repairs. The car fax history is clear.

Has anyone noticed this on their MDX?

BTW my car is at the dealer right now for warranty repair on suspension noise and body rattles.

Hmmm.... the paint could be body damage repair. Have you brought it to a local mechanic and had him check? Carfax may not show anything. I would also have the dealer repaint the back of it.

artc;
Just noticed this is your first post. Welcome!

Don't know what you mean by "blotchy". I assume you are not referring to the orange peel effect that is more noticeable under certain light conditions. If you don't know what I mean by "orange peel", do a search for that term.

My SS 03 has blotchy paint on the driver's side doors. You can only see it in flourescent lighting (as is in my garage). It looks like the base coat metallic is not consistent. The surface is smooth and without physical defects.

I have not yet brought it to the dealers attention and I'm not sure what I would want done to rectify the situation. I don't really want a repaint but I would think it's the only way to fix it.

Same thing here... I notice that under certain angles (with Zaino on) even on normal light. It does not bother me that much *yet* so I did not brought it to dealers attention... It seems that paint job is not that good...

I noticed the same blotchy effect on my '02 Silver. I think it is a characteristic of the paint job. It is my only significant complaint about MDX quality. My '01 silver Honda Civic has a noticeably higher quality of painting -- no blotches or orange peel. But my MDX now has a better shine because it has been Zainoed!

Q: Is this problem unique to the Starlight Silver Metallic MDX color or has anyone with another color MDX experience this "blotchy" effect?:confused:

In reponse to questions from my orginal posting;
It is not the orange peel look. It is the appearence of different shades of the silver metallic. It appears only at certain angles and is most noticeable under flourescent lights.
I have a '03 Infiniti G35 and the silver is perfect as compared to my MDX.

It's possible your X had some small dent repairs repainted. The silver is very metallic, so even a slight change in paint gun orientation can effect the shimmer of the metallic glitter.

There haven't been any recent complaints re: blotchy paint on the SS but there were a number of them during the 02 model run. It doesn't necessarily indicate body work (probably doesn't). More numerous complaints on the Oddy board (lots of blotches on the hoods, which was far more noticable than a side panel).

Some people got repaints or new panels, whereas others had additional detailing/buffing under warranty (seemed to vary significantly by dealer). You have to decide if a repaint or new panel is worth it (6 of one, half a dozen of the other). IIRC, buffing and waxing provided some -- but not complete -- relief.

The blotchy paint appears limited to the SS.

Do a search for BLOTCHY here and at odyclub.com and you'll see some pics to compare.

No paint problems noted with my 02 Silver.

No paint problem on my 02 SS as well, except now the BSM look a little like color dismatch. :(

I know the look you're talking about. I've only noticed it on silver Honda products. I had a 1987 Honda CRX-Si that had the same problem. It was my only complaint about the car (and a minor one at that). Odd how they haven't been able to improve it in 16 years. It didnt' affect the longevity of the paint though, if that's any comfort to you.
